The world's oldest penfriends have both turned 100 years old, and are celebrating so many years of letters sent across the pond. Geoff Banks from Devon, England, and American Celesta Byrne from New Jersey started writing to each other in 1938, when they were just 16 years old.
“Somehow I ended up with this letter from an American girl, and we just kept writing ever since,” Geoff said. “There were a couple of years when we struggled to keep in touch because of the war,” he explained, saying that some of his letters sent during the war were finally forwarded to her after it ended.
They began using emails a while back, to give Geoff a break from putting pen to paper, which became difficult—and recently they had their first video call.
“In one of my early letters I sent her a copy of a British paper in 1953 which had Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ's coronation on its front page. But we always just chatted about daily lives and our families,” Geoff said. “She's a very interesting person. She's always been there to write to, even if it was just birthday cards and Christmas cards.”
Despite having chatted for decades, the centenarian pair only met for the first time in 2002—when Geoff visited New York City for Christmas at the age of 80. They also met for a second time two years later, when Celesta invited the traveler to her New Jersey home for lunch.
Despite having such a unique relationship, the pair never became romantic, even after Geoff's wife passed away eleven years ago. Does muscle (肌肉) actually weigh more than fat Yes, to a certain degree. If you simply take a bowl of fat and a same-sized bowl of muscle, the muscle will weigh more, because it's denser. But there's much more into that question, particularly how your body responds to body fat and muscle.
Muscle is a star player in keeping your body happy and healthy for several reasons. For starters, lean muscle mass can help manage blood sugar. So, the more muscle you have, the greater your possibility to metabolize (使新陈代谢) blood sugar.
Also, as you age, you'll want a healthy amount of muscle, rather than fat. You lose about 1%-2% of muscle mass starting around age 40 or 45.This age-related loss in muscle is one of the biggest reasons many older adults cannot do simple tasks independently.
What's more, muscle can help you keep yourself at a healthy weight by raising the number of calories (热量) you burn at rest. Exactly how many extra calories you'll burn by adding muscle is unclear, but scientists do know the more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism.
Fat is often demonized, because many of you think it has the most calories and it causes you to gain weight, but you do need some body fat. Fat tissue plays a few important roles, from controlling body temperature and producing hormones, to supporting brain health. According to the American Council on Exercise, healthy body fat percentages for women can range from 10% to 31%.
When you go over that number, that's when fat can possibly become harmful to your health. People think fat is just excess storage of energy, but it really causes kinds of conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart problems, etc.
