There was a teenage Puerto Rican girl studying in a New York high school. One day she was taken with a number of other girls to the principal (校长) office for being suspected (怀疑) of smoking. Although there was no proof of any wrongdoing and she had a good record, the principal thought she should be punished and suspended (使停课) her.
“There was something sly and suspicious about her,” he said in his report. “She dared not meet my eyes. She dared not look at me.” When she was questioned by the principal, it was true that she kept staring at the floor and refused to meet his eyes. And in English there is a saying “Don't trust anyone who won't look at you in the eye”.
It happened that one of the teachers had a Latin American background and knew about Puerto Rican culture. After talking with the girl's parents, he went to the principal and explained to him that according to Puerto Rican culture, a good girl doesn't meet the eyes of an adult. Such behavior, he explained, was a sign of respect and obedience. Fortunately, the principal accepted the explanation and admitted his mistake and the matter was settled properly. This difference in interpreting a simple eye gesture was a lesson in cultural diversity that he would not easily forget.
According to the above case, people can know that the rules about eye contact are complicated and various, and that the meaning of eye contact can be very different according to countries, districts, ethnics, gender, social status, and ages. The case mentioned above is common in daily life. People can learn a lot from the case. But they still need practice actually.

Over time, habits of negative thinking about ourselves can lower self-esteem (自尊). So if you want to feel better about yourself, try some of these things:
Set goals. 15 Then make a plan for how to do it. Stick with your plan, and keep track of your progress.
16 Are you so used to focusing on your problems that they're all you see Next time you find yourself trapped in problems or disappointment with yourself or your day, find something positive to deal with. Each day, write down three good things about yourself, or three things that went smoothly that day because of your action or effort.
Aim for effort rather than perfection. Some people get held back by their own pressure to be perfect. They lose out because they don't try. Usually, you may think, “I won't audition (试镜) for the play because I probably won't get the lead.” 17
Remind yourself that everyone is good at different things. 18 Thinking more like this: “She's a great basketball player—but the truth is, I'm a better musician than athlete. Still, I'll keep playing because I enjoy it.” It helps you accept yourself and make the best of the situation.
Take pride in your opinions and ideas. Don't be afraid to voice them. If someone disagrees, it's not a judgment on your worth or your intelligence. 19
A.Focus on what goes well for you.
B.Think about what you'd like to achieve.
C.It's certain that the role will go to someone else.
D.That person just sees things differently from you.
