二、阅读(共4小题;每小题5分,满分20分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Early last year, Yi Chao and a small team of researchers invented a power generator called SL1 which is meant to be attached to submersible (潜水的) sensor-laden research robots, known as profiling floats (观测浮标).
Profiling floats are used to collect data during short trips as far as a mile beneath the ocean surface. When they emerge from the depths, they beam that information to a satellite. They remain the best tool scientists have for remotely studying the upper ocean.
All the floats are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which are typically only good for about five years or a few hundred dives. Their battery reliance limits how often they can dive; a typical float only does it once every 10 days. And after its battery dies, a float is usually abandoned, because the cost of collecting it is higher than the cost of the device itself.
From the outside, Chao's power generator doesn't look like much but it's what's inside that counts. Its bottom is packed with a specially designed wax that changes its form depending on the temperature. The wax solidifies (凝固) when the SL1 lowers itself into the freezing depths of the deep ocean. Then, when the tube resurfaces, the relatively warm water causes its wax inside to liquify. During the change from solid to liquid, the wax increases in volume and raises the pressure inside the tube, which forces a liquid through a generator and creates electricity. All the device has to do to recharge is drop into colder water to resolidify the wax.
“Anything we put in the ocean is limited by its battery,” says Steve Jayne, a senior scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. “If you had unlimited energy available to you, you might be able to profile every day instead of every 10 days.” Chao's ocean generator doesn't produce a lot of energy—each charging cycle tops it up with about half the energy of a single AA alkaline battery—but that's more than enough to meet the needs of the low-powered sensors typically found on profiling floats.
11.What does the underlined word “beam” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Collect. B.Send. C.Exchange. D.Store.
12.What limits the using frequency of a profiling float
A.Its high cost. B.Its weak shell.
C.Its short life span. D.Its battery reliance.
13.What can we infer about Chao's power generator
A.It can be recharged easily.
B.It looks the same as a typical battery.
C.It makes full use of sunlight to recharge itself.
D.It is used to control the change of temperature.
14.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.A further step to the deep ocean
B.A new solution to the research problem
C.SL1: A new rechargeable power generator
D.Profiling floats: the best way to profile the ocean

四、写作第二节(满分30分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating for fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want ” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dog figurines ” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs, since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he couldn't accomplish his task. He was also sad for the old man being so lonely in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

答案:
One possible version:
The little boy headed back down to the old man's house. He knocked on the door, waiting breathlessly. Finally, it opened, and out came the old man. Seeing the boy holding a well-wrapped dog figurine, he looked very astonished but still glared at him without a word. Determined to break the ice, the boy gave the old man the gift with a precious card attached, expressing his care. Deeply moved by all the boy did, the old man could say nothing but to hug him tightly, the tears of appreciation welling up. Out of gratitude, he bought a magazine from the boy and saw him off.
From that day on something changed the inside of the old man. He adopted a real live dog and treated him as his child. It seemed that it was the company of the dog that led the lonely soul out of darkness and loneliness. Gradually, he was willing to greet others and wear a bright smile, expressing his appreciation to life. Indeed, only when we open up the door of our heart, can we be bathed in the brilliant sunshine and enjoy the warmth of love and care.
