Growing up in a small village in India, Kirat Brahma's childhood was full of tribal(部落的) stories. He hoped to create a product to spread the culture of his tribe and pass it down. In 2021, he started Zankla Studio with the aim of showing the rich culture of the Bodo Tribe. The studio creates handmade toys that tell stories deeply connected to the local culture and traditions of the Bodo Tribe.
“When I was growing up, I did not have toys that could represent people like me. The markets were flooded with Spiderman, Mickey Mouse and Barbie dolls. So I wanted to create toys representing my tribe, " says Kirat.
Each toy that is created at Zankla Studio carries a story of the tribe or represents a famous person from the tribe, such as Ada Lowdoom-a Bodo traveler and Bodo Jwhwlao-a traditional Bodo fighter. The products are made by the locals and are plastic-free. The toys come with a booklet(小册子) which tells the story of the character that the toy is based on.
As for future plans,Kirat says, “I wish to hire(雇用) more workers and create more jobs for the people of my tribe. To me, this is more than just a business; it is my chance to add value to my tribe and show it to the world.”
