SHARK CONVERSATION IN SOUTH AFRICA
Take a two-week trip that you will never forget as a volunteer with sharks on a beautiful stretch on South Africa’s coastline. Head out to sea to witness one of the world’s most powerful (and most misunderstood) creatures on this inspiring project, enjoying watching them from both above and below water.
The DAY-BY-DAY schedule
Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town on a Sunday. You will be collected from the airport and spend your first night in a guest house in the city centre.
Day 2: You will be collected bright and early from the guest house and taken down to the project. The drive takes about 90 minutes. You will receive a welcome and head out to sea to witness your first sharks!
Day 3+: Most days you will be out on the boat with the sharks, depending on weather. Help out with the full range of tasks on the boats, and in conversation initiatives on land too.
Last day: On the final day of your project, you will be taken back to Cape Town for your onward travel.
The price is 829, including the voluntary work program with accommodations, airport transfers, one night in a guest house in Cape Town, breakfast daily and lunches when on the boats. Your trip can be extended at a cost of 375 per week.
It is an amazing experience! Some volunteers planned to stay for 4 weeks, extended to 6 weeks and still didn’t want to come home. If you’d like to chat about this holiday or need help, we’re very happy to help.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen, you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with them can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something that freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So, you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more extra-curricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.
24. What does the underlined word “orientation” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Training. B. Game. C. Discussion. D. Examination.
25. What are freshmen probably worried about
A. The learning task. B. The ability to make friends.
C. The relationship with teachers. D. The freshman orientation.
26. Extracurricular activities mainly help students ________.
A. build up healthy bodies B. develop friendships
C. develop their interests D. improve their learning ability
27. Who is this passage written for
A. Freshmen’s parents. B. Freshmen in high school.
C. Middle school students. D. Upperclassmen in high school.

Years ago, it was popular to speak of generation gap, a disagreement between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show them proper respect and obedience(服从), while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that a gap is built into the fabric(结构)of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.
In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the strong wish that parents have for their children is another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom(智慧), but in our society, the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of our life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedom and changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.
28. What is the text mainly about
A. The concept(概念)of generation gap.
B. The reasons for generation gap.
C. Ways to reduce generation gap.
D. Attitudes towards generation gap.
29. In modern society, young people often ________.
A. depend on their parents to make a life
B. live with their parents in the same area
C. have very little in common with their parents
D. ask their parents for the best advice
30. What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A. Parents should be strict with their children.
B. The young never want to satisfy their parents.
C. Parents couldn’t do things well themselves.
D. The generation gap is partly caused by the older generation.
31. Which of the following also caused the generation gap
A. Parents are not strict with their children.
B. The young value the old too much for their wisdom.
C. Young people don’t have the knowledge of a lifetime.
D. The society develops too fast.
D
Depression (抑郁症) in young adult males, aged 18 or 19, is linked to a 20% greater risk of having a heart attack in middle age, according to a new Swedish study.
The link can be partly explained by poorer stress resilience(抗压能力)and lower physical fitness among teens with mental disorders.
The research included 238,013 men born between 1958 and 1962 who were given examinations in adolescence and were then followed into middle age (up to the age of 58 years). A total of 34,503 men were diagnosed(诊断)with a mental disorder.
The study found that a mental disorder in young adulthood was linked to a higher risk of having a heart attack by middle pared to men without a mental illness in young adulthood, the risk of heart attacks was 20% higher among men with a diagnosis.
“We already knew that men who were physically fit in adolescence seem less
likely to keep fitness in later years if they have low stress resilience,” said study author Dr Bergh, “Our research has also shown that low stress resilience is also connected with a greater tendency towards bad behavior, such as higher risks of smoking, drinking and other drug use.”
“Better fitness in adolescence is likely to help protect against later heart disease, particularly if people stay fit as they age. Physical activities may also reduce some of the bad effects of stress. Those in poor health could benefit from additional support to encourage exercise and develop plans to deal with stress,” said Bergh.
32. How does the author develop Paragraph 3
A. By giving examples. B. By explaining the reasons.
C. By making comparison. D. By listing numbers.
33. What are men with low stress resilience likely to do
A. Smoke more. B. Eat more.
C. Sleep less. D. Do less exercise.
34. What will Bergh agree with according to the last paragraph
A. Physical activities add to stress.
B. Stress may cause heart disease.
C. Taking exercise is unnecessary.
D. Staying fit is of great importance.
35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Entertainment. B. Education.
C. Health. D. Fashion.

Tips for Green Travel with Kids
Travelling doesn’t mean letting go of all the eco-friendly choices we work so hard to achieve in our daily life. Here are a few tips for green travel with kids:
Booking nonstop flights whenever possible will reduce carbon emissions(碳排放). If the closest local airport doesn’t have nonstop flights to a certain place,
check in with other local airports to see if nonstop flights are available. 36
Whether you’re flying or driving, it’s easy when traveling to pull into fast food restaurants for snacks. 37 My kids love to help plan snacks. I let them create their own snacks for the trip at home.
Reusable water bottles are easy to bring along whenever you travel. At the airport, keep your reusable bottles empty until you have passed through the security(安检). 38 Single-use plastic water bottles create unnecessary waste and the plastic can be harmful to your health.
39 Open a few windows and turn off the air conditioner. You should also help your children keep their good, green habits from home to place while traveling. Sometimes, vacation can mean more than one shower each day---once in the morning and again after getting out of the pool. Pay attention to the number of showers and the length of showers. 40
Too much carbon emissions seriously pollute the environment.
But you can pack healthy food before starting off.
In this way, you can save water and energy.
Fill them up on the other side of the security checkpoint.
Security check is a necessary part of each trip.
Save energy by turning off the hotel room lights when you head out for the day.
You might have to drive a bit further, but saving on carbon emissions makes it worthwhile.

There was a country house in a beautiful valley. It was very big, beautiful, built with good taste, and full of details.
The owner was a well-off landowner called John. He was a person who had a good heart and loved animals, and he liked going hunting. He used to capture different living birds and put them into cages. He liked to see the animals closed up, to take care of them and to protect them. Before being captured, these wild animals lived in the valley.
John had a 15-year-old son called Josh. He also liked animals and birds, but unlike his father, he didn’t like the way his father kept them inside cages, without being able to fly around. Josh liked them to be free, in their natural environment. Sometimes, when his father wasn’t around, Josh freed some of the animals as he could not bear to see them suffering in the cages, even if they were quite comfortable.
His father used to capture gazelles, cats, zebras, leopards, eagles, owls and many others and he never noticed that some of the cages were open and empty. Then one day, he did.
As John knew his son’s wish was to see the animals freed, he knew that it was him. Josh decided to leave the country house without telling his father.
After some days, his father became worried, because Josh wasn’t back. He even started to cry, thinking that his son had left him forever. Josh was his only child, and John loved him more than the animals, as this was just a hobby to occupy himself.
John asked some of the workers in the house to go out and look for his son. They finally found him after a long time of searching. He was in another country house with a friend.
John’s workers told Josh his father’s desires, begging him to come back and saying that he could do what he wanted with the animals, only if he would come back home.

第一节(满分15分)
One possible version:
Dear Tom,
How is everything going
I’m writing to share with you my unforgettable experience of the sports meeting held last week.
Before the meeting, my teacher and classmates made a detailed plan. We were all excited to give advice and provide anything needed. At the same time, the athletes made full preparations, running and jumping in their spare time. During the meeting, the athletes competed fairly on the playground with the other students cheering around. What a great time.
I think our class has become more united after the sports meeting. In addition,
the classmates know more about each other and become closer. As a result, we are more hopeful of the colorful school life.
What about your life recently I would appreciate it if you could reply soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
This gave Josh the permission to free all the animals. It allowed them to range free around the country house and the valley. So Josh went to see his father and told him he was coming back to release all the animals. He said that the doors of the cages and the doors in the fence surrounding the house were always going to stay open so all the animals living there could move as they wanted, in or out, and whether they wanted to eat there or not.
And so that is what happened, the animals went in and out whenever they wanted. Even other animals that had never been caged went there, too. They liked going because they were well cared for. Josh and his father were very happy because they had made the right decision---letting them free. John didn’t have to go hunting anymore as the animals went to his property on their own. The country house was always full of animals. So, this very united family lived happily with their wild animals, making sure to take care of them.
