The African penguin is expected to go extinct in the wild in just over a decade, given its current population decline. The main reason is a lack of food caused by disturbance to ocean conditions from global heating and competition from the commercial fishing industry. According to a study, scientists have identified a possible additional cause, one that is an entirely new threat and that further prevents the penguins from finding food: noise pollution from marine (海洋的) ships in a bay.
Since 2016, a new shipping practice has started at Algoa Bay. The bay offers ship-to-ship refueling for ships anchored offshore. Since the start of this practice, marine traffic in the bay has doubled. The number of bulk carriers (散货船) pulling into the bay has increased by ten times as much. Thus the noise levels in the area had doubled and the population of penguins has dropped sharply. High noise levels affect the ability of marine animals to find food, communicate or navigate properly.
Researchers used data from ship identification tools to estimate underwater noise from passing ships. They also attached underwater microphones and accelerometers (感应器) to some of the penguins. Recording the noise will tell researchers what the penguins are hearing, if they’re talking while hunting, if they’re changing their movements in response to noise, and if the noise is drowning out their hunting conversations. This will allow researchers to determine whether the sound disturbance is a direct cause of the penguins’ ongoing difficulties in finding sufficient food.
The study is the first to explore the effects of ocean traffic noise pollution on seabirds and the consequences of offshore shipping activities on underwater noise levels. Experts are considering proposing various global best-practice approaches to reduce some of the impacts of noise pollution, such as policies that limit the number and size of ships allowed into a bay of this kind. “We also need more scientific monitoring of noise, before these measures are put in place and afterward, so that we have a proper understanding of what works.” a researcher said.
24.What is caused by the noise pollution
A.The penguins’ lack of food.
B.The penguins’ proper navigation.
C.People’s communication disability.
D.The commercial competition.
25.Why did scientists attach microphones to penguins
A.Because they wanted to study the way of relieving marine traffic pressure.
B.Because they could determine and analyze the source of ocean noise pollution
C.Because it helped to calculate underwater noise levels caused by different ships.
D.Because the impact of ocean on penguins’ hunting behavior could be found.
26.How can the noise pollution be reduced
A.By exploring the real effects of ocean traffic.
B.By restricting the ships to go into the bay.
C.By banning all the offshore shipping activities.
D.By increasing ship-to-ship refueling activities.
27.What will researchers probably do next
A.Evaluate the risk of the noise.
B.Establish a monitoring system.
C.Put the measures in place.
D.Try to understand what happens.

Medha Pappula, an eighth-grader at Brambleton Middle School, is using her skill set to solve a problem — bullying. She recently earned an award from National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC) for her anti-bullying (反霸凌) efforts in software development and animation (动画).
Pappula, 13, said she discovered that a classmate had experienced cyberbullying, which was painful for her to learn about. “Even though I didn’t experience it, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, even my worst enemy,” Pappula said.
Then she developed a program that recognizes when digital and text-based messages include bullying language. The program takes a message, and then recognizes signs of bullying and gives a rating to the cyberbullying, the teen said. If the rating is high, she said, “the program can be used to carry out things like removing that message or reporting it.”
Pappula first designed and tested the program for Discord, a popular community-based messaging platform (平台), and said she plans to develop it for even bigger platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
In addition to this program, the NBPC awarded Pappula for a three-minute animated video about Unity Day, which she created and shared on YouTube last October. Unity Day, according to the video, was started by the NBPC in 2011 to raise bullying awareness among school-age children. Schools encourage their students to wear orange on Unity Day, as it is “a color that is connected with safety,” the website reads.
Pappula visited different websites to develop her animation skills several years ago. She spent more than a month creating her 2-D animated video using an animation software called Krita. The effort paid off, as nearly 6,000 people have already viewed the “Unity Day” video on YouTube. Along with being posted to the NBPC webpage, her animation was also shared by Cartoon Network. Moving forward, Pappula hopes to continue to work with the NBPC and to use her skills to lift those around her.
28.How did Pappula feel about bullying
A.It upset her life a lot.
B.It could be stopped easily.
C.It happened online most often.
D.It shouldn’t happen to anyone.
29.How does Pappula’s program work
A.By sending voice messages.
B.By removing useless messages.
C.By sending its users important reports.
D.By rating messages according to the language used.
30.What did Pappula do to make the animated video
A.She asked the NBPC for help.
B.She taught herself animation.
C.She learned from an expert.
D.She created Krita.
31.Which word can best describe Pappula
A.Honest. B.kind.
C.Polite. D.Proud.

Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks as my main means of reading literature. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. My consumption of new books has doubled as a result--but a recent paper makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my comprehension.
The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel, both at the University of Chicago, and it draws from the “dual process model” of mental processing. According to this-view, we have two ways of assessing information. System 1 is intuitive (直觉的), relying on natural ability and feeling. It is quick, but likely exposed to misinformation. System 2 is analytical involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think our way through the material step by step. For decades, psychologists have designed various tests to determine which of these two systems a person is using. As one example, consider the/ following question: How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark (方舟) If you answered two, you were probably only considering the core of the question, which is System 1 thinking. To get to the right answer-zero, you need to think more carefully about the wording, which would allow you to remember it was Noah who built the Ark, not Moses. That is the kind of analytical process.
Keysar and Geipel’s brilliant idea was to investigate whether the sensory form-seeing vs. hearing-of the information would
make a difference. They found that it did: when answering these kinds of simple questions, participants were more likely to make errors when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written.
A greater reliance on our feelings could be a problem if we are consuming information that needs logical study. For this reason. I will return to reading non-fiction with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy to go with the flow of my emotions while my critical mind takes a break.
32.What does the author think of listening to audiobooks
A.It is economical. B.It is demanding.
C.It is time-consuming. D.It is relaxing.
33.Which of the following best describes System 2 model
A.Fairly reliable. B.Fully automatic.
C.Question-centered. D.Emotion-involved.
34.Why is the Ark mentioned in Paragraph 3
A.To present a fact. B.To illustrate a view.
C.To introduce a topic. D.To draw a conclusion.
35.What does the author intend to tell us
A.Listening to books comes at a price.
B.Reading non-fiction books benefits.
C.Critical thinking is a must in reading.
D.Ways of processing information differ.

Kala has deep ties to her Hawaiian roots. Her ancestors navigated(航行)the oceans for centuries using their knowledge of the stars, the sun, the currents and the wind. 36 .
It’s not that she navigates without technology. Rather, she uses the natural technology around her. It’s called Wayfinding, and it was taught to her by her father. 37 . He also taught her how to use them to hold the course. Over 200 stars have specific names and purposes when they are Wayfinding. They have to look at each of the stars and determine if they are rising or setting.
During the day, Kala uses the sun until it hits a certain height. 38 , she looks for certain species of land birds and stationary clouds that indicate there is land below. When Kala sails, she feels “very connected to my past and where I came from. I feel very connected to the crew and the canoe. We’re a family.”
The voyage from California to Hawaii required Kala to spend long hours studying the day and the night skies. 39 . But it also had its moments of awe. For Kala, the beauty is in tying together the past and the present to enjoy the moment. So, when she is not sailing, she teaches Wayfinding skills to school-aged children in hopes of preserving the skills her ancestors relied on.
40 . But if we take the time to look up, to see the stars and the sun, the way the clouds move, the miracle of life beneath and above us, we will discover something deep inside us, something that will always lead to happiness.

Milo is a rescue dog, adopted by 20-year-old Makayla Swift. But Milo the beagle is also a rescuer. One morning in November 2021, Swift opened her front door in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Milo took off running. Milo ran to the house across the street. He seemed unsatisfied with this house, so he ran to the one next door, Swift on his tail. He started scratching on the front door and Swift was thinking, “Why is he literally trying to break into her house ” She was embarrassed. Not everyone wants a strange dog on their property. But as she tried to drag Milo away, she could hear a sound coming through an open upstairs window. It was a voice yelling “Help!”
Hours earlier, around 4 a.m., 85-year-old Sherry Starr had risen from her bed. All of a sudden, standing there between the toilet and the tub, she slipped. She went down-hard-on the tile floor, and got stuck. Starr was scared of dying there. Her best bet, she decided, was to listen for the letter carrier in the afternoon and scream like the devils.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Dear Mike,
We haven’t seen each other for a long time. How is it going
I’ve heard you have a problem now. It is said that you’ve been lost in network games and don’t study hard any longer. As your best friend, I’d like to say something here. As a student, the most important is our study. We should spend our most time on it.
Computer games are of course interesting, but they are used only for relaxation after a long time of study. Playing games should never be what your life is all about. Besides,You should form a good life habit and balance your time between studying and playing games.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.范文
For the next few hours, Starr practiced yelling, “Help! Help! Help!” Her voice was very faint. However, Milo the beagle, apparently heard Starr the instant Swift opened her front door. He rapidly rushed to the opposite house, while Swift was confused and embarrassed. It was a strange sense that hit Swift and reminded her something abnormal had happened. Without thinking twice, Swift called 911.
Not long after the call, rescue workers arrived. They thought they had to remove the toilet to remove Starr, but in their last effort, they gave one pull and fortunately, out she popped. Starr burst into tears, feeling grateful and a sense of relief. Subsequently, Starr was sent to the hospital, where she underwent a general check-up and was diagnosed with a mild ankle sprain. When told it was Milo the beagle who had given her a second life, Starr declared: “That dog was a blessing.”
