If primary school children often hear different accents(口音) in their daily lives, then it is easier for them to learn new words from other children. This is the research result of Dr. Driana Hanulíková and Helena Levy from the University of Freiburg.
“Until now, there has been our study on the influence(影响) of accents on children’s learning of new words,” said Hanulíková. Then the researchers asked 88 children aged 7 to 11 in Freiburg to do a study. Some of them were bilingual(能说两种语言的) and some often heard many different accents in their daily lives. But they all spoke German.
They asked the children to play a computer game. They had to quickly find out and name things in the game. The game had new words and most kids of their age don’t know them. As they played, the kids heard these words spoken by virtual(虚拟的) players with different accents.
The study found that kids who knew more accents learned the new words more easily. Past studies showed that bilingual children had better language learning skills. But in this study, the bilingual kids didn’t find it easier to learn the new words.
Hanulíková said,“This is the power(力量) of natural learning in everyday life. Children learn more from other children with different accents while playing because they need to say and use these words to communicate.”

Ben Kneppers and Dave Stover love surfing in the ocean. Unluckily, when they go surfing, they often find lots of rubbish—plastic(塑料的) bags, and also old fishnets. They knew that if they were just against it, the world wouldn't change, so they decided to take action(采取行动). Ben and Dave got together with a friend, Kevin Ahearn. They started a company(公司) in Chile and named it Bureo. It makes and sells skateboards(滑板).
Fishnets are made of plastic. When fishermen on fishing boats need to throw away old fishnets, they usually just drop them into the sea.
It's easy for them to do this, but it is bad for the environment of the ocean. That’s where Bureo’s idea can help. The company has set up a recycling program that makes it easy for fishermen to deal with old fishnets. Instead of throwing them into the ocean, they can leave their old fishnets at Bureo’s recycling centers. This is almost as easy as throwing them into the ocean, and the local fishermen are happy to help clean up the ocean. Bureo has a factory in Chile which turns the old fishnets into plastic material for making skateboards. If Bureo hadn’t done this work, tons of old fishnets would have ended up in the ocean as pollution.
Bureo sells its skateboards over the Internet and also sends them to shops in the USA, Chile and Japan. Skaters everywhere like buying them not only because they’re great skateboards, but also because they know that Bureo is cleaning up the ocean.
( )13. The underlined word “recycling” means “ ” in Chinese.
A.回收 B.出产 C.加工 D.储藏
( )14. What do workers in Bureo do according to the passage
A. They pick up rubbish in the ocean.
B. They repair old fishnets.
C. They take old fishnets to the recycling centers.
D. They turn old fishnets into useful things.
( )15. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Bureo’s money is used to help clean up the ocean.
B. There are many factories like Bureo all over the world.
C. Skaters around the world help with the business of Bureo.
D. Many volunteers join in the work of Bureo every year.
( )16. The writer wrote the passage mainly (主要) to .
A. introduce three famous men
B. tell people something about a company

D. tell people some ways of protecting the environment
