Step 1 Lead-in
1. Show a picture of Thanksgiving and ask students: "What can you see in this picture " "Do you know anything about this festival "
2. Play a short video about Thanksgiving to arouse students' interest.
Step 2 Vocabulary Learning
1. Present the new words and phrases.
2. Let students follow and read the words and phrases to correct the pronunciation.
3. Conduct a small vocabulary test:Spelling the words and choosing the correct meanings.
Step 3 Reading Skills Instruction
1. Introduce the skill of prediction. Ask students to guess the content of the text based on the title and the picture.
2. Explain the method of skimming. Let students quickly read the text to get the main idea.
Guide them to look at the title, headings and the first and last paragraphs.
3. Illustrate the key points of scanning. Let students read carefully to find detailed information.
Step 4 Text Reading
1. Ask students to skim the text and answer the question: "What is the main idea of the passage "
2. Have them read the text again for scanning and complete the tasks:
(1)Find out the origin and historical development of Thanksgiving.
(2)Learn about the traditional activities on Thanksgiving.
(3)Explain the long and difficult sentences in the text to help students understand.
Step 5 Group Discussion
1. Organize students into groups and discuss the following questions:
Why do people celebrate Thanksgiving
What do you think is the most important thing about this festival
How has Thanksgiving changed over time
2. Ask each group to select a representative to speak and share the results of the group discussion.
Step 6 Summary
1. Review the new vocabulary and reading skills learned in this class.
2. Summarize the main content about Thanksgiving in the text.
Step 7 Homework
1. Recite the key vocabulary and phrases.
2. Briefly describe the history of Thanksgiving in your own words.
