Recently my friend invited me to her residential hall, which is an African-American themed hall. They have lots of meetings and outings there. So I thought it would be fun. On this particular day they were having a pancake breakfast, just a time to mix. I was excited to be there, too.
I walked in at a time when the mini-party was at its peak. I found my friend; excitedly, we hugged and she led me to a seat in the back. We sat there for some time. I sensed some sort of discrimination. I wondered, were we just isolating ourselves or were we facing discrimination
My friend’s breakfast came in first, and it was a plate full of colors. My mouth watered. I have always liked rainbow dishes: they make me hungry. She let me pick pancakes and fruit; we ate and only then began to talk.
The black American contemporary music was extremely loud. Some boys and girls were beating the tables and some guys on the stage were dancing in what looked like a kind of competition.
We talked about various subjects: hair, boys, shoes and books. And then we got to it. “What do African Americans think of Africans ”
We argued. I told her I thought African Americans were haughty. Why did they sideline us When we met in a narrow passage and our eyes met, they quickly looked aside before we greeted. Why Weren’t we all black I mean, wasn’t this exactly the reason why there was an African-American themed house to begin with
Did they look down upon us because they grew up in America and we in Sub-Saharan Africa Oh yes, I felt this was it! They believed that we were HIV-positive and that the giraffes were right behind our huts.
My friend uttered, “No!” And then she continued:
“I also thought so at one point but after living with these guys, I got to a different conclusion altogether. These guys are not from Africa. They were not born there and may have never been there. We can’t expect them to naturally like us or bond. We are different. Skin color is the skin color.”

9. The underlined word “haughty’’ in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to“________”.
A. kind-hearted B. modest C. fashionable D. proud
10. Which statement is NOT true according to this text

Have you ever wanted to see your dreams after you woke up Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may help you do this in the near future!
Researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system to recreate images in people’s heads. The pictures AI has created include a teddy bear, an airplane and a clock tower. The technology is 80 percent accurate, reported Science magazine.
Previously there have been AI models that can turn a word or phrase into images. The AI has studied lots of images and their text descriptions. Over time, the AI can find patterns and recreate pictures if you first input text.
This time, the researchers took a step further. They trained the AI to link people’s brain scan data with images. They asked four people to look at 10, 000 different images, and let the AI find patterns of blood flow in the brain. Then the patterns can be related to the images.
If people looked at an airplane, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very cloudy airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text - to - image” model. By feeding the keyword “airplane”, the AI would improve the image and make it more real.
“It’s a new method that combines textual and visual information to ‘decipher the brain’”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University told Science magazine.
Researchers said the technology could someday help people with paralysis to communicate. It might also help scientists understand dreams or even how other animals see the world.
11. What do we know about the AI system mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. It can help train people’s minds. B. It can fully present people’s dreams.
C. It was created for drawing people’s heads. D. It can recreate pictures in people’s heads.
12. How did the previous AI models turn phrases into images
A. By understanding the meaning of the words.
B. By finding patterns in images and their text descriptions.
C. By drawing pictures according to users’ orders.
D By finding different photos from the internet.
13. What is the working process of the new AI system
A. relate with image→scan blood flow→improve the text→turn into the image
B. relate with image→turn into text→scan blood flow→improve the image
C. scan blood flow→relate with image→turn into text→improve the image
D. scan blood flow→turn into text→relate with image→improve the image
14. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. How to know the way animals see the world.
B. How people with paralysis talk with others.
C. What the new AI technology could be used for.
D. How AI technology affects people’s dreams,
15. Which part of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Entertainment. B. Health.
C. Education. D. Science.

D. By finding different photos from the internet.
