阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
“GOING,GOING, GONE, for $3 to bidder No. 43, the lady in the last row, white hat.” The auctioneer (拍卖师) called out my auction number and location. Delighted at my victory, I took the box and gave it a shake. The contents rattled. Inside were dozens -- maybe even hundreds --of buttons, pins, and other items, all glittering in the sunlight. It reminded me of my mom's button box. As a girl, I'd always enjoyed digging through it, just as my own daughters enjoyed looking through mine.
Then I caught sight of an old woman on a swing, watching the happenings in the yard. I went to chat with her. She told me she was selling almost all her possessions because she was moving to a nursing home in town. Her eyes fell to the button box, and when she looked up, they were glistening with tears. Her fist closed around a delicate pearl button, now yellow with age. She smiled as she told me about the birth of her first child and the special pearl-buttoned outfit that would be worn by five more babies before time wore it thin.
I noticed a large, dark brass military button and asked her about it. “From my first husband's uniform,” she said. “It's one of the few things I had to remind me of him when he didn't return home alive." As we went through the box together, I pulled a small key from the box, I heard the sharp intake of her breath. It was the key to a music box that played a special love song, she said. She'd lost it years ago. From my hand to hers, I passed the key to her memories.
Hairpins, wooden nickels, and ruby buttons took her further down memory lane. I knew that when I reached my own home, my heart would pull me to my sewing room, where I would rediscover my own lifetime of memories in my own button box.
21. What do we know about the old woman
A. She was in need of money.
B. She was leaving her house.
C. She was wearing a white hat.
D. She was selling her mum's button box.
22. Which of the following words best describes my talk with the old woman
A. Discouraging.
B. Amusing.
C. Touching.
D. Shocking.
23. What might be the best title for this passage
A. A Life in a Button Box
B. Memories of My Life
C. An Old Lady at a Yard Sale
D. My Purchase at an Auction
B
Meet the Mistle Thrush (槲鸫鸟) When it comes to birds associated with Christmas, the mistle thrush may not immediately spring to mind. But, with a preference for mistletoe and holly berries, as well as being one of the only birds that continues to sing throughout winter, it deserves a second look. The mistle thrush measures 28cm in length, making it both the UK’s largest thrush species and songbird. With a long tail, yellow legs and a fat white body that’s covered with brown spots, this bird certainly has a distinctive appearance. Sadly, your chances of spotting one in the wild are slim as its population has been in decline since the 1970s — between 1995 and 2010, England lost a third of its native mistle thrushes, and numbers are still plummeting. It’s thought that a high infant death rate could be to blame, as well as other factors such as loss of habitat. The Woodland Trust is working hard to save the mistle thrush, but if it is to truly flourish in this country again, the charity needs your help. THE MISTLE THRUSH FACT FILE Common Name: Mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus) Family: Turdidae (thrushes) Habitat: woodland, parks and gardens Diet: berries, earthworms, slugs and insects Predators: cats, foxes and birds of pray Not to be confused with: the song thrush, which is much smaller
HOW TO HELP There are a few simple steps you can take to make your garden a safe space for these endangered birds, such as planting berry bushes and only trimming (修剪) them every few years so that they produce a lot of fruit. You could also plant holly, yew, ivy and crab apple trees, all of which provide food and shelter for the mistle thrush. These birds are extremely territorial when it comes to food, and they often work together to protect their food from competitors, so where there’s one, others are likely to follow. If you have mistle thrushes visiting your outdoor space, another way you can help is by keeping pet cats indoors, as they are predators of many garden birds. What’s more, by supporting the Woodland Trust, you’ll be helping the organization to raise awareness about the threats facing the mistle thrush and continue its efforts to protect and restore its natural habitat, as well as creating new spaces for it to live.
24. Which of the following statements is true of the mistle thrush
A. It arrives in England around Christmas.
B. It is much smaller than the song thrush.
C. It feeds mainly on plants and vegetables.
D. It looks quite different from other birds.
25. What can people do to protect the mistle thrush
A. Follow one of the birds at a time. B. Keep cats away from the garden.
C. Donate money to the Woodland Trust. D. Trim berry bushes as often as possible.
26. What behavior do mistle thrushes exhibit when it comes to protecting their food sources
A. They share their food with other bird species.
B. They are not territorial and allow other birds to feed alongside them.
C. They work together to protect their food from competitors.
D. They migrate to new areas if their food sources are threatened.
27. You can probably find this article_____________.
A. on a Wildlife and Conservation website B. in a BBC Gardeners’ World magazine
C. in a Nature Photography magazine D. in a traveler’s birdwatching blog
C
Yawning is something we all do -- maybe because we're bored carrying out boring tasks or because we're tired. Sometimes, just seeing other people yawn can set you off. But is this biological function really contagious, and why do we do it in the first place
Many of us think we open our mouths when we yawn to take in more oxygen, but in fact it appears there is no clear biological reason. According to BBC Bitesize, new research suggests it might be because yawning cools the brain down and prevents it from overheating, much like the fan in your laptop. This might be why we're more likely to feel sleepy and yawn in warm temperatures.
What is clear is that we yawn more when we're exhausted and ready for a nap, and we can't control when we do it -- once we start, there's no stopping us! But it's also true that yawning is a very contagious behavior. John Drury, a researcher from Sussex University found in his research that there is a connection with our social group and how close we are to the people in it. If we identify with the person who exhibits the behavior, we are likely to copy it too.
Another research by the University of Nottingham in 2017 found similar results. They asked volunteers to watch other people yawn. They found their ability to resist yawning when others around them yawned was limited. And the urge to yawn was increased when people were told they couldn't. They also found, when using electrical stimulation, that they were able to increase people's desire to yawn. These findings, they say, could be useful in treating other conditions like Tourette's, which involve the same area of the brain.
What is certain is that a yawn can creep up on us at any time even when we think we're not tired --but, I hope, not when you're reading this article!
28. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “contagious”?
A. Infectious.
B. Active.
C. Dangerous.
D. Efficient.
29. According to a new research, we yawn because
A. we are too exhausted.
B. our brain needs more oxygen.
C. we are bored with difficult tasks.
D. our brain needs to be cooled down.
30. What is the similarity between John Drury's findings and those of the university of Nottingham
A. Humans can't stop yawning as it is beneficial.
B. When told not to yawn, we will yawn less frequently.
C. Using electrical stimulation can stimulate people to yawn.
D. We are more likely to yawn when someone around us yawns.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The reasons for yawning.
B. The benefits of studying yawning.
C. The necessity of yawning.
D. The similarity of the studies on yawning.
D
An economist, Adam Smith, famously wrote that “it is not from the benevolence (慈善) of the butcher, the brewer or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest.” Like Smith, many economists today believe one’s self-interest is what drives competition and growth in market economies. Yet, in an increasingly interconnected society, it is even more crucial to have cooperative skills. Thus we should encourage cooperation to better prepare children for the future.
Firstly, cooperation is an especially prized soft skill in the present age. As a study proves, soft skills such as good communication and empathy (共情) indicate outstanding employees as compared to technical skills or knowledge. In contrast, extremely competitive and individualistic behavior may damage social relations in the community of co-workers. Even the most competent employee may fail to pursue his goals effectively without others’ help.
Moreover, encouraging cooperation boost children’s self-respect that better prepares them for the competitive world. Many modern societies are consumed by a crazy drive for success and the pressure to perform has infiltrated both classrooms and offices, causing higher rates of anxiety and depression among people. Teamwork can help an individual realize each has his or her own unique abilities and that another person’s strengths don’t discount his or her talents. Thus, cooperation can confirm children’s self-worth by correcting the insight that winning or paper achievement is the only measure of success.
However, critics may claim adapting to competition should be given priority in education and parenting. To achieve one’s ambitions, one has to actively fight for opportunities and distinguish oneself from others. Nevertheless, since passion can already stimulate children to fulfill their ambitions, the need to encourage competition may be at the end of the day. As much as external competition can drive people to pursue excellence, internal motivation is at least equally or even more essential, and cooperation plays an instrumental role in helping one uncover one’s motivations.
32. What can be inferred from Adam Smith’s words
A. Our society is increasingly interconnected.
B. Our dinner is made out of the regards to markets.
C. Self-interest pushes the development of economies.
D. The butcher, the brewer or the baker is not sympathetic.
33. What does the underlined word “infiltrated ” mean in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Brightened. B. Decorated. C. Defended. D. Entered.
34. Which of the following might the author agree with
A. Paper achievement is the only measure of success.
B. One’s ambitions can be achieved through cooperation.
C. Competition is not necessary for people to pursue excellence.
D. Actively fighting for distinguishing oneself should be prioritized.
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A. To introduce the advantages of cooperation.
B. To compare cooperation with competition.
C. To suggest enhancing competitive skills.
D. To advocate teaching children to cooperate.
