三、阅读理解(共10小题,每小题2分,满分 20分)
(A)
Now satellites are helping to forecast(预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气), because this is where the weather forms(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家) can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today hundreds of weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they will be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead(提前).
( )31. Why do we use the weather satellites to take pictures of the atmosphere
A. Because clouds form there.
B. Because the weather forms there.

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences (影响) health, intelligence(智力) and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. People in these states have more heart trouble when the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools in the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year( July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather too. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure(气压) may make people forgetful(健忘的). People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low- air- pressure days.
Are you feeling sad, tired, or forgetful today It may be the weather's problem.

Sydney is comfortable for travellers to visit any time of the year. The city enjoys over 300 sunny days each year, though it has 104 days of clear skies.
Summer( December to February) is the best time to enjoy the Sydney outdoor lifestyle. Temperatures usually reach around 26℃, but it can be very hot with temperature climbing to over 40℃ for a few days each summer. Summer days can be humid(潮湿的), and sometimes have hot dry winds, but they often end with a drop in the temperature, rain and thunder. Within hours, the storm can pass and the evening continues cooler. You won't need to pack much more than T- shirts to visit Sydney in summer, but remember your hat and sunglasses.
Autumn( March to May) is still warm with mild(温暖的) nights. There can be good days for the beach in March. It's a good time for visiting attractions, going to the zoo, catching ferries around the harbour without the summer crowds. You may need a warm top for the evenings, especially for May.
Winter( June to August) is cool, not cold. Average July temperatures are17℃, and daytime temperatures seldom drop below 14℃, but nighttime temperatures can fall to below 10℃. There are usually two or three rainy weeks during winter. It does not snow in Sydney, so people can't make snowmen there. If the beach isn't your scene, and you don't like the heat, winter may be your time to visit.
Spring ( September to November) days are great for exploring Sydney's attractions, bush walking, cycling, and other outdoor activities. Sydney is the driest and sunniest in spring.
