In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, you can find Jamey Turner playing an unusual musical instrument, the glass harp (竖琴). A glass harp is made up of different-sized drinking glasses, each filled with water.
Turner makes music by running his fingers over the top s of the glasses. When he does so, each glass makes a different musical sound. Visitors like what they see and hear. They thank Turner by leaving a donation of a dollar or more in his box. Jamey Turner is 78 years old now. He first became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for 50 years.
Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding more water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.
Turner always uses low-priced glass considering that it sounds better than costly crystal (水晶), and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores. He decides if they produce the right sound by rubbing (摩擦) his finger over the top of them.
The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote music for the instrument. About 400 pieces of music have been written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play the glass harp these days, but Turner says he sees videos of people experimenting with the instrument on YouTube. He hopes the next generation will continue making music with it.
4. What word can best describe Turner’s performance
A. Disappointing. B. Appealing. C. Convincing. D. Strange.
5. How does Turner change the sounds of the glasses
A By placing glasses on a wooden board.
B. By beating different parts of the glasses.
C. By controlling the amount of water in the glasses.
D. By holding different glasses with rubber bands

B. To protect his fingers.
C. To adjust beats easily.
D. To produce better sounds.
7. What does Turner expect of the glass harp
A. It can be passed on.
B. Students can study it in school.
C. It can be used to play all sorts of music.
D. More composers can write music for it.

Binge-watching (追剧) your favorite TV series is bad for your brain. Dr. Randall Wright’ based in Texas, said the need to watch episode (集) after episode has a similar influence on the brain to gambling (赌博). What’s more, it often leads to social loneliness, snacking on junk food and a shortage of exercise and sleep, which, over time, is bad for the brain.
When you let auto play start the next episode, you can find out what happens next and your brain receives good feedback, Dr. Wright wrote in an article. This right-away satisfaction is similar to gambling where even after a win, you are not satisfied and want to continue playing. With binge-watching, you are not satisfied with stopping after episode five and want to continue watching. This cycle coupled with the snacking and the long time sitting can lead to unhealthy changes in your brain and body over time.
Dr. Wright said, “Binge-watching itself is not bad. It becomes problematic when you are watching a third, fourth or fifth episode instead of doing healthy activities.” But he said it is possible to avoid the bad influence of binge-watching with four tips, including staying away from salty, fatty, calorific foods, exercising before a binge-watching, setting an alarm for sleep and balancing TV viewing with socializing.
If you add these tips to your binge-watching practice, you can create lasting healthy habits and still enjoy the now-and-then binge-watching time without hurting your brain.
8 What might “it” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Gambling. B. Binge-watching. C. TV series. D. Brain.
9. In what way is binge-watching like gambling
A. The long time sitting.
B. The changes of feeling.
C. The snacking on junk food.
D. The immediate satisfaction.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Do’s and don’ts of binge-watching.
B. The tips on how to develop a health y lifestyle.
C. The ways to keep away from binge-watching.
D. The reasons why binge-watching is problematic.
11. What may be the best title of the passage
A. Binge-watching: The Result of Addiction
B. Binge-watching: A Must of A Better Life
C Binge-watching: A Killer of Your Brain
D. Binge-watching: Gradual Harm on Your Health
D
After waking up, you may feel annoyed that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to recreate images based on people’s brain scans, reported Science magazine.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US, which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
The AI then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the fMRI data — when a part of the brain is activated (激活), more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, AI learned how human brains would react when seeing different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry (模糊的) airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy (精确), according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that includes texts and images to “decipher (破译) the brain”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals understand reality.
12. What do we know about Stable Diffusion
A. It can help train people’s minds. B. It can fully present people’s dreams.
C. It was created to draw people’s brains. D. It can produce pictures from people’s thoughts.
13. How did the AI system learn about human brain activity
A. By analyzing activities of human thoughts. B. By studying patterns of blood flow in the brain.
C. By recording brain scans from four participants. D. By examining 10,000 photos about human brains.
14 How did the AI system improve the quality of the final images
A. By employing a “text-to-image” model. B. By adjusting various brain scan data.
C. By combining additional brain scans. D. By inputting text from human observers.
15. What is the potential use of this technology according to scientists
A. To improve text-to-image models. B. To create more accurate brain scans.
C. To learn how animals view the world. D. To help people interpret their dreams.

14. How did the AI system improve the quality of the final images
