“On the very first day of 2024, I saw the snow of Kilimanjaro, not from the novel written by Ernest Hemingway, but from the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro!” Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old mountaineer who’d stood on top of Mount Qomolangma last May, climbed onto the tallest peak in Africa, making herself the youngest Chinese girl that conquered it.
Xu’s passion for mountaineering was motivated by her father, who himself reached many peaks, including Mount Qomolangma. And her mountaineering journey began on a family trip to Xizang and Sichuan four years ago. For many years, Xu devoted herself to rigorous training. She went to the mountains in Yunnan and Sichuan every month, climbing peaks over 5,000 meters and doing daily physical exercises like running, swimming and rope skipping. All that hard work got her ready for the challenges she would face on Kilimanjaro.
Above 4000 meters on Mount Kilimanjaro, the climate is similar to a desert, with big temperature differences. The whole climb took 7 days, during which Xu faced unpredictable weather such as rain and strong winds. Staying warm and avoiding heat loss was the main challenge. Xu had to be very sensitive to any temperature changes and adjust her clothing accordingly. This climb was also a learning experience for Xu. She was climbing with Xia Boyu (aged 74), the first Chinese climber to summit Mount Qomolangma with an artificial leg, who’d inspired Xu a lot.
Mountaineering, Xu discovered, is not just about being strong physically; it is also a journey of self-discovery. “In climbing and life, it’s important to know when to let go of things that are weighing us down and how to re start when we feel ready,” she reflected.
24.What inspired Xu Zhuoyuan’s interest in climbing mountains
A.A novel written by Ernest Hemingway. B.A former trip to Mount Qomolangma.

B.Conquering New Heights —A Story of Passion.
C.Mountaineering—A Journey of Self-discovery.
D.Mount Kilimanjaro —A Destination of Inspiration.

South Korean government has tried everything to persuade women to have babies. Among their initiatives: sponsored housing for new couples, discounted after-childbirth care for new mothers, even a “baby payment” for each new born. Corporate South Korea is also getting in action, trying to delay a population crisis that could see the country’s workforce halve within 50 years.
“We will continue to do what we can as a company to solve the low-birth issue,” Lee Joong-keun, the chairman of Booyoung Group, a Seoul-based construction company, said this month after awarding a total $5.25 million to his employees for babies born since 2021. Other companies are offering payments, too. This development has come about as South Korea’s fertility rate (生育率) — the average number of children a woman has over her lifetime — has decreased to 0.78 in 2022. That means the population is aging rapidly. “The main reasons behind the falling birthrate are the financial burdens of child care and challenges of balancing work and family,” Lee said.
South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol praised companies that came up with “tax benefits and other various support measures to boost child birth,” according to his spokes-woman. Despite aggressive efforts, South Korea’s fertility rate is on course to sink further to 0.65 by 2025. This is largely because of the stress put on women, who face fierce workplace discrimination if they want to pursue a career while having children, experts say. South Kore a ranked 105th out of 146 countries in gender equality last year, according to the Global Gender Gap Report.
Whether financial bonus can have a positive impact on fertility remains an unanswered question. “Cash payouts are not affordable nor sustainable options for many companies,” said Yoon In-jin, a sociology professor at Korea University. “More importantly, South Korea’s male-dominated corporate culture has to fundamentally change in favor of working women,” he said. “Korean women will start having more babies if they don’t have to sacrifice their career for it.” Nearly 50% South Korean companies punished workers using parental leave, especially on promotions, according to Labor Ministry statistics.
28.What population problem is South Korea very likely to face in the future
A.Its fertility rate will continuously decline. B.Its population will halve within 50 years.
C.There will only be the aged very soon. D.New-born babies will make up 65% by 2025.
29.What is the author’s attitude towards the current money-awarding measure
A.supportive B.critical C.far-sighted D.uncertain
30.What does academic Yoon In-jin support to do in boosting fertility rate
A.Provide equal career security to women as men are enjoying.
B.Improve South Korea’s global rank in gender equality.
C.Remove women’s financial burdens and home-work balancing challenges.
D.Offer couples with new born babies more tax benefits and other supports.
31.What’s the main idea of this passage
A.The reasons why South Korean women are not having babies.
B.The policies South Kare a government applies to persuade women to have babies.
C.The measures corporate South Korea takes to promote birthrate.
D.The severe discrimination South Korean women are facing.
D
Animal and plant species are disappearing at frightening rates. The problem has led to efforts to “rewild” places where such life existed before human development, pollution and climate change forced it out. The American city of Detroit is an example of how human actions can increase rewilding, which generally means helping natural systems in damaged locations, removing dams or building tunnels to reconnect animal pathways cut by roads.
Detroit’s population reached a high of 1.8 million in the 1950s. Then the population began dropping. By 2000, there were fewer than one million people living in the city. Thousands of houses and other buildings were left empty over the years. Some structures were destroyed, leaving empty
areas that plants and animals regained as habitats. Nonprofit groups have also planted trees and community gardens in these areas. Anti-pollution laws and government-supported cleanups made nearby rivers better for fish and native plants.
Now, Detroit is home to 300 bird species and is a busy visiting place for ducks and others during migration. Unlike most big cities, its population is decreasing but its streets and buildings remain in place. And there are many kinds of habitats, including large lakes, rivers and human neighborhoods. Detroit’s parklands are so quiet that people don’t even know they’re in the city.
“It used to be that you had to go to some remote location to get exposure to nature,” said JohnHartig, a professor of University of Windsor. “Now that’s not the case. Like it or not, rewilding will occur. The question is how we can prepare communities and environments to embrace the presence of more and more wildlife. After all, many city people have lost their tolerance to live with wildlife. To really make a difference in dealing with the biodiversity crisis, you’re going to have to have people on board.”
32.What does the author want to tell us by the example of Detroit
A.It’s government-supported efforts that really matter.
B.Humans’ efforts can make a difference in rewilding.
C.Humans are to blame for the worsening environment.
D.It’s hard for humans and wildlife to live in harmony.
33.What might have happened in Detroit at the beginning of 21st century
A.The city was overpopulated.
B.More community gardens disappeared.
C.Many buildings were abandoned.
D.The environment was badly damaged.
34.What can we infer about current Detroit from the text
A.It is a big city crowded with tourists and bird species.
B.Tourists don’t show any interest in its quiet surroundings.
C.It’s become a center for those who study animals and plants.
D.It’s turned into a place where people can get close to nature.
35.What does the underlined word “embrace” in the last paragraph mean
A.Accept. B.Delay. C.Imagine. D.Supervise.

Lately, I was deeply touched with two movies about faithful dogs:A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Way Home. A dog's life cycled and cycled only to meet his first owner while the other covered 400 miles of toil and hunger all the way back to her home. I had a faithful dog too when I was a little girl, but it was a different story.
When my dad first took him home in a cardboard box, he was so quiet that I even doubted whether there was really a dog in it. When I peeped through two small holes on the side, I just saw a patch of grey fur. My dad assured me that it was just a small dog before I dared to open the box. There he was! What a lovely grey dog! He was slim and looked smart. I was on my knees as I cheerfully observed him. However, he tried to avoid eye contact with me, apparently a little scared with everything strange around. I wanted to pet his head but he only turned his head away.
When he became familiar with me, I called him Billy and he was really delighted, zagging his tail. Every time I left for school, he saw me off. When I came back, he ways waited on my way home and greeted me with his licks and brushed his head against legs. When Billy was in the kitchen with my father, lying on a small heap of firewood side the furnace (灶),he could always know which piece of firewood my dad would pick and raised his paw in time. It always surprised me how intelligent and considerate Billy I imagined him turning into a small boy carrying my schoolbag for me and talking my dad. With Billy brightening every day of my childhood, I was more than happy.

But one day, Billy was seriously ill. I took him to the pet doctor. The doctor said it was nothing serious and prescribed medicine for him. After returning home, I began to take good care of him. He was so smart that every time I held him, he would look at me gratefully. But his cough got worse and worse, and gradually he could not eat. I was worried about him, but in the end he just left me. I had been sad for a long time, but not been able to find a dog that could replace him.
A few years later, I went to a dog's shelter to try my luck. When I went in, I found a gray dog that looked like Billy. As I looked at him, he tried to avoid eye contact with me, which was just like Billy. I was so happy that I decided to take him home. I gave him a bath and he began to grow closer to me. After that, I became more and more fond of him, and I could feel his closeness to me. I named him
Coco. He is unique and I believe he will bring me a lot of happiness.
