过去进行时表示在过去某时刻或时段正在进行的动作, 常与表示过去某时刻或某时段的时间状语连用, 如at … o'clock last night, at that time yesterday, then等。

过去进行时还常常出现在讲故事的语境中，如本模块的句子：

1. 一般过去时表示过去的时间里发生的动作，所表示的动作往往已经完成，谓语动词用动词的过去式；
过去进行时强调在过去某时刻或某时段正在进行或持续的动作, 由was / were +动词现在分词构成。
e.g. Mum bought me a watch last Sunday.
Mr Wang and his wife were in America last month.
Linda and her sister were cleaning their room at 9:00 am yesterday.
Mrs Li was sleeping then.
2. 一般过去时所指的过去时间比较笼统；
过去进行时所指的过去时间比较具体。
