Allen was playing in his room. He heard a familiar chirping and rustling from the cage in the bedroom corner. It was his beloved Blue Finch, named Mary. The boy had cared for the bird since he was six, a gift from his mother for graduating from kindergarten and entering primary school. Now, at 12 years old, Allen had just recently celebrated his primary school graduation and was about to take another step in his life journey toward junior high school. For the past six years, Mary was his constant companion and closest friend.
As he grew up, Allen found it difficult to make friends or be close to others. Having had to move around many times and transfer schools due to his father’s work in the military, Allen never felt like he truly belonged in any one place. He always knew it wouldn’t be long before he would have to move yet again. The stress and pressure of a constantly mobile life also led to strain and pressure at home, leading to loud arguments and fights between his mother and father which he could hear from behind closed doors.
But, throughout all of this. Allen’s closest friend and companion-the true source of stability in his life — was Mary, his finch. But Mary was more than just a simple, calm pet: whenever Allen felt sad, the bird would always be singing and chirping, almost as if she sensed how he felt and wanted to lift his spirits. And when Allen fed the bird, Mary always moved across her branch to rest against his finger, never failing to bring a smile to Allen’s face. Yet, one summer day after Allen had come home after a walk at the park he found the window of his bedroom open and the door of Mary’s cage open-the-bird was gone. Suddenly, Allen realized that he must have left the cage open after cleaning it and forgot about the window being open on such a hot day. Upset, Allen fell down to the floor sobbing.

It was a special day. Today was my 18th birthday. My dad Kuat was sitting on our old red sofa. Right here 14 years ago, my mother said she was leaving us. I was only 4 years old and didn’t realize it would be the last time I saw her. Over 14 years, my dad had been trying hard to raise me. He knows everything about me. He is not just my father — he is almost everything to me. To him, I am everything as well.
Today I had some news for him, “Daddy, I want to ask your permission to go to America.” I didn’t finish my speech as he shouted, “No!” “But why ” I replied. “If this all is about money, then you may not worry. I’ve got a scholarship…” He interrupted, “I’ve told you no. Don’t make me repeat it.”
I felt warm tears running down my cheeks. I thought there would be no problem because he always knew how much I dreamt about studying abroad. I was so angry and said, “But why do I have to ask your permission I am already 18 and I’m not a kid anymore.”
I was so disappointed that all these years he couldn’t see what I was doing. I knew I loved my dad but I just could not stay at my hometown anymore.
I left home and my eyes were full of anger and tears. I decided to go far away from home and start creating my dream life. I took a bus and went to the airport. I closed my eyes and felt that something was wrong. Everything was so silent when suddenly I heard my phone ringing. It was a nurse from a local hospital, “Hello! Are you the daughter of Kuat Your dad has had a heart attack. The situation is serious. We want you…” I wasn’t listening to her anymore. Tears were flowing and I started to choke when all of a sudden I heard a man’s voice and opened my eyes. I realized that it was a nightmare (噩梦).

On a Sunday afternoon, Kiana French was having fun fishing with her father and younger sister, not knowing the next minute, they would struggle not to sink in the freezing water. Their 12-foot boat was taking in water little by little, and the wind was picking up. Her father, Gary French, hurried to operate the engine, while Kiana,16, was in the middle with Cierrah, her sister, frightened but still able to keep calm.
Kiana asked Cierrah to take off one of her cowboy boots, with which she got some of the water out. Hard as she tried, that little effort would not help stop the boat sinking. Moments later, the unthinkable happened. The boat was full of water and then it flipped over. Kiana and her sister were dumped in the water. Their father, who had had a surgery six months ago, managed not to be thrown into the water but seemed to have great pain in the chest due to the sudden change.
Kiana quickly put on her life jacket and saw Cierrah’s and her father’s life jackets floating away. She reacted quickly to get them back and held her sister onto the boat. They were so far out in the middle of the lake that they could not see the shore clearly. What’s worse.it was getting harder to stay above the waves. Their father swam over and hugged his two girls. Cierrah crying silently. Kiana heard her beloved sister murmur, “I can’t feel my feet.”
Kiana knew the only thing to do was to get to shore herself and find help. She looked up at her father, exchanging a concerned glance, turned round and swam as hard as she could towards the shore
Fighting against the strong currents and cold wind, she screamed for help at the top of her lungs every three minutes or so. A strong wind blew, and she looked back only to see her sister’s and father’s heads bobbing(浮动)in the water. She burst into tears, thinking her sister and dad were dead, because she was taking too long.

“I don’t get it, Pete,” Janet said to her cousin. “Why do you fish at Murphy’s pond if old Mrs. Murphy is a witch (女巫) ”
“The fishing’s great… And the old Murphy house is over a hill behind the pond,” Pete replied. “We’ll be okay… As long as we stay away from the house,” he continued in a low voice. “They say kids who go into that house are never seen again!”
After they got to the pond, witches were forgotten. Pete sat on the old dock and threw out his line. Suddenly Janet saw something shining in the water and stepped forward for a closer look. The rotting (腐朽的) wood of the dock broke under her. “H-e-l-l-p!” She screamed as she dropped down into the dark, cold water.
Pete jumped in to help her. “Quiet down!” He said out of breath as they got to the rocky shore. “You’re not hurt. If you keep complaining, you’ll wake the witch!” Then he screamed. “OUCH-H-H!” and lifted his foot. There was a deep cut on the bottom of his foot from a sharp rock!
“Oh, Pete, you’re hurt!” Janet cried. “I’ll go for…” But before she could say Help, she saw an old woman coming toward them. Without a word, the woman picked up Pete and carried him up the hill. A cold, wet, and confused Janet followed. She was frightened but had a strange feeling that the old woman meant no harm.
At the top of the hill, the woman walked to ward an old house. “Oh, p-p-please, Ma’am,” a frightened Pete begged, “Please don’t go there. That’s where the w-w-witch lives!”
“That is my home, young man,” the woman said softly, “Do not be afraid.” At the front door, she said to Janet, “Please open the door.” Janet did, and the three went inside. Mrs. Murphy gently put Pete on a couch (睡椅), then disappeared into another room.

Emily White came to the world 17 years ago, with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive long. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In her hometown, a yearly outdoor performance was held in the school auditorium (礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the own's people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only in elude the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens—her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a glance at Amy's body and said, ''Child, you are just not suitable. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too. ''
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral (合唱的) room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, ''Emily, you’re next.'' Kind of nervous as she was, Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She tossed and turned in bed one thousand times. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain due to stress.

It had been a long, tiring day because 48-year-old taxi driver Carl had worked for 8 hours. He’d been picking up and dropping off passengers the whole day. He wanted to get home then, but he noticed a panicky (恐慌的) woman getting off a taxi with a child in her arms.
“Why is she shouting at the driver ” Carl slowed down near them. He realized that the woman was begging the driver not to leave her there. The boy was having difficulty breathing, and his arms and legs were shaking uncontrollably. Carl realized the boy was having a seizure (疾病发作)and asked the woman to get into his taxi.
Carl drove as fast as he could. The hospital was several miles away, so he had to race against time to save the boy. Meanwhile, he grew concerned about why the previous driver had dropped them off during such an emergency. The woman told Carl that she and her four-year-old son, Tyler, returned from the park. She told the driver she would pay him once she got home because she didn’t take her purse. But then her son suddenly had a seizure, so she asked the driver to take them to the hospital instead. But the driver refused.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the hospital. Tyler was rushed inside for treatment as his mother waited outside the ward, crying. Carl was hungry and tired but stayed back. An hour later, the doctor said, “Tyler is out of danger now. But it could have been fatal (致命的)if you hadn’t made it here on time.”
Mrs Thomas immediately looked at Carl and cried in tears, thanking Carl for saving her son’s life. Carl was glad Tyler was out of danger. Later, he dropped them off at home, and when Mrs Thomas came out to pay him, he refused. “I have a policy. NO FARES for those making trips to the hospital!” said Carl,“I just did what any good human being would do. And please convey my regards to Tyler!” Mrs. Thomas was moved by his kindness. Carl never changed his policy of dropping off passengers at hospitals for free.

Paragraph 1:
Upon hearing the noise, Allen’s mother rushed upstairs and asked what had happened. “Mary, she’s…she’s gone,” Allen sighed sadly with disappointment. “Don’t worry, honey,” said his mother, trying to convey comfort and confidence, “Let’s move together and find Mary. Six years of companion has established a close bond between both of you. She will definitely come back to her family.” Allen’s mother then kissed him fondly on the forehead and helped him back up from the floor. Hand in hand, they made their way downstairs and to the front door.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with anticipation, Allen and his mother went outside to look for Mary. They called out Mary’s name, even imitating bird sounds as they walked down the street. They scanned their way down one block after another-eventually they found themselves at the entrance of the park Allen and Mary had been to multiple times. Amazingly, it was Mary that was perching atop of the bench where Allen always liked to sit in times of sorrow and loneliness. At the sight of Allen, Mary unhesitatingly spread her wings and flew, chirping all the way, into Allen’s cupped hand. His mother was right after all: Mary always found her way back to Allen’s heart.

Then I understood that it was difficult for both of us and I asked in a voice full of hope and with glowing eyes, “What do you think about moving to the US ” “That’s a brilliant idea, let’s go packing!” he said.

With desperate tears, she suddenly spotted a boat with a figure walking on it. She waved and cried for help with all her strength. Help!” She was soon picked up and taken towards where her father and sister were. Fortunately, they didn’t drown but her father seemed to be giving out, with one hand holding tight to the boat, the other holding Cierrah.
Paragraph 2:

Mrs. Murphy brought two warm blankets. She wrapped one around Pete, saying his foot would be okay. Janet, still wet and confused, used the other blanket. Mrs. Murphy’s home felt strangely comforting, with a cozy fireplace calming their nerves. As Mrs. Murphy cared for Pete, she talked about the pond’s ancient magic, how it could heal and protect. Janet was amazed at the kindness of the woman she thought was a witch. Mrs. Murphy’s home, not scary, was a safe place of wisdom and care.
Paragraph 2:
Mrs. Murphy smiled happily. “You two are safe now. The pond’s magic has done wonders for both of you,” she said, her eyes showing genuine concern. Janet and Pete, once wary of Mrs. Murphy, now felt deeply thankful for the unexpected help they got from the supposed witch. Mrs. Murphy continued to share stories of the pond’s magical history, creating a picture of wonder that erased any remaining doubts. The kindness in her voice and the wisdom in her words showed her as a protector, not a “witch”. The scared pair embraced this newfound understanding with open hearts.

Emily hurried to the school and nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room. The fear of being rejected came to strike again. ''Jeff Green, Rose Black…'' she murmured as her eyes moved upward. ''Wow! '' Emily abruptly covered her wide-opened mouth, feeling as if her heart would jump out. There, at the top of the list was posted her name. The leading singer! However, whispers around her pulled her back to earth. Just then, she felt a pat on the shoulder. It was Mr. Butler. ''We selected you for our faith in your abilities and voice. '' Inspired, Emily practiced even harder for the day of performance.
Paragraph 2:
Finally the day for the performance came. Emily's eyes danced with excitement as she stepped on to the stage. Standing still, she heard noises among the crowd. Obviously not cheers! Emily felt nervous again and even her legs began trembling. At that moment, her eyes parked on Mr. Butler at the corner. He nodded and exchanged a determined glance with her, which timely put her heart back in place. With the music rising, Emily began her singing. Her sweet voice poured and the audience fell into an abrupt silence. When she finished, the auditorium erupted into a sea of cheers. Emily White in tears, with so many birth problems in her body, became the shiniest star!

The driver said, “My name is Tyler.” Carl spoke no more, and tears of joy filled his eyes.
