Mother Nature is a cruel mistress. Why Read on to find the answer.
Venice
This iconic city is sinking rapidly. The canals that make up the streets of Venice rise 2mm every year, making relics of history go under the surface of water and destroying architecture.Experts warn that without intervention(干预),this city will disappear back into the water at an even faster rate, consumed by rising sea level from melting polar ice caps.
Machu Picchu
These iconic ruins have drawn adventurous tourists into the mountains of South America. The forces of natural erosion(侵蚀) have been accelerated by tourism and this landmark faces severe influence from increasing foot traffic. The Peruvian government recently suggested a cable car that would cut out the intense hike up to the ruins, making the site instantly accessible to millions, but the future of Machu Picchu remains uncertain.
Glacier National Park
Perhaps you've heard that the ice caps are melting. But nowhere is more apparent in the United States than in Glacier National Park.Estimates indicate that the glaciers that are part of the beauty of this national landmark will disappear entirely in the next two decades.
The Great Barrier Reef
Hidden from view beneath the waves, the Great Barrier Reef has been rapidly dying off.Nearly fifty percent of the coral which once occupied a large area is gone, destroyed by pollution and disease.

Having moved to a new city,I was looking for things to do in my spare time.I intended to meet new people, for I am a social person.Hearing that the Business Confucius Institute(BCI) was offering Chinese evening classes on the university campus,I was determined to sign up for Level 1 class.
This initial(最初的) decision was made on a whim.I had no grand career goals or plans to travel to China in the near future.Learning a new language was the fact that it was not something I had done before. My mother is from Spain and I was raised with two languages, but there is a huge difference between acquiring a language in childhood and learning one in adulthood.I expected to find out how I would get along with Chinese.
In each class my Chinese teacher would teach us what seemed like thousands of new words and expressions, and then get us to act them out in role plays reproducing basic Chinese introductions and conversations. After each lesson I felt as though my brain had been placed in a deep oil pot for a long time. But then,I began to realize that the more my brain ached right after class, the more information I had taken in.I found that Chinese words and expressions we had covered would rush unexpectedly into my head at any moment, such as when I was in the shower or driving to work.I have now completed the Business Confucius Level 3 class and am able to hold basic conversations with Chinese people on a variety of topics.
This experience helped me a lot.Recently I landed a new job at the University of Leeds' School of Law,providing job opportunities for Chinese students.Learning Chinese will help me in my career, further fueling my motivation to continue my studies.

For many English learners, learning to write fluently in English is much more challenging than learning to speak fluently.Even for advanced level learners, written communications can come much more slowly in English than spoken communications.
Writing in English needs to follow rules of grammar much more closely than in spoken English. For example,if someone says ‘Please borrow me your pen’ in conversation,it's clear from the context that the speaker intended to say ‘Please lend me your pen’.In written communication, words are even more important because they lack visual context.Especially if you are working in a business setting, making mistakes can cause miscommunication which might lead to problems. In conversation, you can smile and make a good impression. With writing, all you have are your words.
Imagine if you're at a party. You might have a conversation with someone and only understand a few words. However, because you're in the context of a party, you can make all the mistakes you might make.It doesn't matter.Everyone is having fun. When it comes to writing, there's not so much room for error.
Spoken English is much more spontaneous (自发的) than written English. It's looser and mistakes don't necessarily impact your ability to communicate clearly. In writing,it's important to think about how to write to the intended audience. You need to understand who will be reading your writing. It takes time to figure these things out.
We expect more of what we read.We expect it to be true, entertaining or informative. When there's an expectation, there's pressure to perform well. With speaking, with the possible exception of giving a presentation, there's not nearly so much pressure—unless you're closing a business deal.
It is important when teaching written English skills—especially for business English—to be aware of the challenges that learners will face when learning to function in a written English environment.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章从几个方面解释了为什么英语写作比口语更难这一现象。
8.According to the second paragraph, why are words more important in written communication
A.Because writers can only rely on words.
B.Because grammar only applies to writing.
C.Because written words are more expressive.
D.Because written English involves visual context.
A [推理判断题。根据第二段第三句“In written communication, words are even more important because they lack visual context.”以及第二段最后一句“With writing, all you have are your words.”可知,写作时,文字是唯一能依赖的东西。故选A项。]

A.When taking part in parties.
B.When giving a presentation.
C.When having a talk with friends.
D.When hanging out with business partners.
B [推理判断题。根据第五段中的“When there's an expectation,there's pressure to perform well.With speaking,with the possible exception of giving a presentation,there's not nearly so much pressure—unless you're closing a business deal.”可知,作者认为除了完成商业交易,做演讲压力最大。故选B项。]
10.What will the author probably continue to write after the last paragraph
A.Tips on how to teach English writing skills.
B.Functions of writing skills in business English.
C.Difference between spoken and written English.
D.Challenges people will meet in making business.
A [推理判断题。根据最后一段可知,文章最后引出教授书面英语技能中面临的挑战,由此可推测后文会具体解释是哪些挑战,以及如何应对这些挑战的建议。故选A项。]
11.What can be the best title for the text
A.Why Is It Easy to Speak Fluently
B.What Contributes to a Good Writing
C.How Can a Person Improve His Writing
D.Why Is Writing More Difficult than Speaking
D [标题归纳题。根据第一段可知,本文最开始就提出观点:英语写作比口语更具挑战性,下文旨在解释这一现象存在的原因,如第二段第一句“Writing in English needs to follow rules of grammar much more closely than in spoken English.”指出其中的一个原因:写作需要更严格地遵守语法规则。所以“为什么写作比口语难”最适合作本文的标题。故选D项。]

Do you know that every fourteen days one of the world's 7,000 languages dies out Throughout human history, languages have died out because of natural disasters, war or genocide (种族灭绝),but nowadays the major factor is globalization. This is happening all over the world. In the Amazon rainforest, for example, native people are learning Portuguese to move to the big cities in Brazil to find work.In South Africa, young people are choosing to use English instead of traditional languages to study in higher education.
About 60% of the world's population speak one of the twenty most common languages, and the number of speakers of world languages such as English,Spanish and Chinese is increasing rapidly.Would we really miss most small languages if they died out completely The answer has got to be “yes”!
When a language disappears,we lose the culture and history of a people. We also lose the knowledge of the people who speak the language. In a famous case in northern Australia, doctors couldn't find a cure(疗法) for a skin problem that the local people developed. When they asked a native woman, she used her own language to describe a plant which could cure the disease. There are many other examples of why disappearing languages are important.Speakers of the Kallawaya language of Bolivia have got a wide vocabulary of medicinal plants in their part of the rainforest which doctors in the modern world have never heard of,and speakers of the Yupik language of Alaska have got ninety-nine words for ice, which shows that they've got a unique understanding of their world. Our planet would lose that understanding if these languages disappeared.
But we don't have to lose as many languages as some people think.Using modern technology can save small languages, and we mustn't lose the culture, history and knowledge that these languages contain(包含).

Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you've read! 16 You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images(形象) may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.
· 17
If the plot, characters,or word usage is confusing for you,you likely won't be able to remember what you read. It's a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don't understand what you're reading, how would you remember it But there are a few things you can do...Use a dictionary; look up the difficult words.
·Are you connected
Does a character remind you of a friend Does the setting make you want to visit the place Does the book inspire you,and make you want to read more With some books, you may feel a connection right away. 18 How willing are you to make the connections happen
·Read it; hear it; be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And,put some characters into the words. When he was writing his novels,Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He'd make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character. 19
·How often do you read
If you read frequently, you'll likely have an easier time with remembering what you're reading(and what you've read). 20 As you make reading a regular part of your life, you'll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You'll learn to enjoy literature—as you remember what you read!
A.Are you confused
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.What's your motivation
D.Memory is sometimes a tricky thing.
E.Marking helps you remember what you read.
F.But other books require a bit more work on your part.
G.You can do the same thing when you are reading the text!

空格后句意为“你有多愿意建立这些联系?”,此处表示转折,而且前面有“some books”,后面必定会有“other”之类的与之对应的词,F项“But other books require a bit more work on your part.”

Dear Wang Mei,
I'm writing to give you some suggestions on how to learn English well.
First of all,why not listen to the teacher carefully and take notes in class If you do these, you can go over your lessons after class. What's more, you'd better spend half an hour reciting words every morning because vocabulary plays an important part in English learning. Finally,I'd like to suggest you keep an English diary every day, which helps improve your written English.
I hope these suggestions will be of use to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The walls of failure surrounded me.I saw my teacher's eyes fixed on my every move.My mum's blank expression betrayed one thing: disappointment.“He is not giving his full potential,” I heard my teacher say.I gazed down, afraid, ashamed, and determined. My determination was not to excel and put my best effort into improvement; my determination told me to give up.
It was my first year in the United States.I was a fifth grader, and everything around me seemed alien. My native language had been Spanish, and after coming to the United States from Puerto Rico because of serious family problems,I just felt like hiding inside my metaphorical shell. The school itself was bright and very welcoming. The bright walls with colored dinosaurs and cartoons were appealing, and the distinct smell of crayons, play dough, and chalks made the place feel like my home.
Then why did I have such a negative attitude It was not because my teachers did not support me.They were willing to stay after school with me to help me learn the concepts. It was not because my classmates did not want me there. Most of them invited me to sit with them at lunch. It was not because I could not talk to anyone; I had a bilingual teacher with me all day, helping me.
My negative attitude was the result of frustration and lack of interest in study. No matter how hard I tried, the mysterious code known as “English” would not take root in my brain.I tried for hours to improve my grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, but the unknown language “did not want to be learned”.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。

One afternoon,my mother was informed to attend a parent-teacher conference. Having learned my sudden lack of interest and that I had just given up,she was not content. In fact,I spent that whole afternoon listening to her telling me why I should struggle. She told me,“You can never achieve your goal unless you put your best effort into it.” That simple statement stuck in my young mind.It “clicked”and inspired me.
The next day,I found myself understanding English words I had thought I would never know. A simple change in attitude had made the words slowly go from looking like something alien to actually making sense. My teachers' welcoming smile, patience, and bright attitude,in addition to my desire to learn, were enough to make a difference.Within days,I found myself starting to communicate with the natives in English fluently. My mother helped me to see where my problems were lying. And I learned that success in life requires desire, but desire is not enough. One needs push from someone and he cares to achieve what seems to be impossible.
