Step 2 Grammar
过去进行时
过去进行时表示在过去某个时刻或某一时段正在进行的动作, 它常与表示过去某一时刻或某一时段的时间状语连用, 如at ... o'clock last night, at that time yesterday, then等。如：
e.g. Jenny was doing her homework at nine o'clock last night.
Dad was watching TV then.
过去进行时还常常出现在讲故事的语境中，如本模块的句子：
e.g. Alice was sitting with her sister by the river…
It was sitting in a tree and smiling at everyone.
They were having a tea party in the garden.
过去进行时的句式
一般过去时与过去进行时的区别
1. 一般过去时表示过去的时间里发生的动作，所表示的动作往往已经完成，谓语动词用动词的过去式；过去进行时强调在过去某时刻或某时段正在进行或持续的动作, 由was / were +动词现在分词构成。
e.g. Mum bought me a watch last Sunday.
Mr Wang and his wife were in America last month.
Linda and her sister were cleaning their room at 9:00 am yesterday.
Mrs Li was sleeping then.
2. 一般过去时所指的过去时间比较笼统；
过去进行时所指的过去时间比较具体。
e.g. Mike played computer games last night.
Mike was playing computer games at ten o'clock last night.
