一、概述
当引导定语从句的关系词在从句中作时间、地点、原因状语时,应使用关系副词when,where,why。用法如下:
1.指代表示时间、地点、原因的先行词。
2.在从句中充当时间、地点、原因状语。
3.起连接作用,把主句和定语从句连接起来。

Beijing is the place where (in which) I was born.北京是我的出生地。

二、关系副词引导的定语从句
1.when引导的定语从句
when表示时间,代替先行词并在从句中作时间状语,其先行词往往是表示时间的名词如time,day,week,year 等。
There comes a time when you have to make a choice.你必须做出抉择的时候到了。
Gone are the days when they could do what they liked.他们为所欲为的日子一去不复返了。
We'll put off the picnic until next week,when the weather may be better.我们将把野餐推迟到下星期,那时天气可能会好一点儿。

当先行词是时间名词时,定语从句既可用when 引导,也可以用that 或which引导,关键看关系词在从句中作何种成分。若关系词在定语从句中作状语,则用when引导;若关系词在定语从句中作主语或宾语,则用 that或 which引导。

2.where引导的定语从句
where表示地点,代替先行词并在定语从句中作地点状语,其先行词往往是表示地点的名词如 place,factory,house,village等,或表示抽象地点的名词如 position,point,case,stage,situation,atmosphere等。

why表示原因,代替先行词并在定语从句中作原因状语,其先行词是表示理由的名词reason。

当先行词reason 的关系词在定语从句中不作状语,而是充当主语或宾语,则用that或which。

三、“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句
关系副词when,where,why 引导定语从句时,关系副词也可用“介词+关系代词”代替。在“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句中,关系代词只能用which或whom,不可用that或who。先行词指物时用 which,先行词指人时用whom。when=at/in/during/on+which;where=in/at/on+which;why=for+which
(1)介词选择的三原则:一先、二动、三意义。
①一先:根据先行词的习惯搭配来确定。
I'll never forget the day on which I first met him.(表示具体的某一天,介词用on)我将永远忘不了我第一次遇到他的那一天。
The boy pointed to the direction in which he would run.(“朝……方向”,介词用in)那个男孩指着他要跑去的方向。
②二动:根据从句中谓语动词的习惯搭配来确定。
This is not the book of which the teacher spoke in class.(speak of 意为“谈论”)这不是老师在课堂上说到的那本书。
The two things of which they felt proud were Jim's gold watch and Della's hair.(feel proud of以……自豪)他们感到自豪的两样东西是吉姆的金表和戴拉的头发。
③三意义:根据从句所表达的意义来确定。
The colorless gas without which we cannot live is called oxygen.这种无色的气体称为氧气,离开了它我们不能生存。
(2)“介词+关系代词”的结构
①“介词+which”在定语从句中分别可作时间、地点和原因状语,代替相应的关系副词when,where和 why。
I still remember the day on which(=when)I first came to school.我仍然记得初来学校的那一天。
The factory in which(=where)I work is a large one.我工作的那家工厂是一个大工厂。
②“介词+which(指物)/whom(指人)”在定语从句中作地点表示存在关系,定语从句中的主谓常常要倒装。
They arrived at a farm house,in front of which sat a small boy.他们来到一处农舍,农舍前边坐着一个小男孩。
③“不定代词或数词+of+which(指物)/whom(指人)”在定语从句中作主语,说明整体中的一部分。
China has a lot of islands,one of which is Hainan Island.中国有许多岛屿,其中之一是海南岛。
④“介词+which(指物)/whom(指人)”在定语从句中作目的、方式或地点状语。

⑤“名词+of which”代替“whose+名词”在定语从句中作定语。
