Money Couldn't Buy Everything
Fifteen years ago, I was born into a big family.I had been taught that money couldn't buy everything ever since I was a little kid.My parents are the most hard-working people I have ever seen.As much as my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.
As a child, I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest, but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers. As my eyes began to wander, I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts with women in their designer dresses.
My family, on the other hand, was the opposite of rich. Our clothes had been washed so many times that the colours had become dull and lifeless.Although this showed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and hair neatly combed. When sitting on the old big red and white truck after the service, I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.
I never stopped those daydreams, even when I was in middle school.Since it was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families.Although I could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my situation was embarrassingly obvious on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sisters' old jeans.I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me.I was attached to her.Soon, her birthday was approaching.Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.

However, I grew upset as I couldn't afford a gift. It would be such an embarrassing scene to be present without a gift.I even thought about quitting, but I was not able to bring it forth.I struggled for days but couldn't figure out any solution. One day, while helping with my hard-working parents with the housework, it suddenly occurred to me that maybe I could make a gift by myself.I immediately started my DIY project, which ended up with a toy doll. The big day finally came.I arrived at her house and handed her the box.
When she opened the gift box, my heart was too nervous to beat. I looked closely at her face, wondering if she would just laugh at me.What happened next was totally beyond my imagination.Upon seeing the doll, Julie let out a cry of excitement and she held it close to her face, saying repeatedly that it was the sweetest gift she had ever received. Her words freed me.I couldn't help smiling together with her.At that precious moment, I realized money couldn't buy everything. It was our friendship that really mattered.
A
It is widely believed that biodiversity(生物多样性)is promoted to save species. But in reality species exist only as part of ecosystems and cannot survive unless their ecosystems are protected along with the diversity they contain as much as possible.
Protecting habitats is important for keeping biodiversity. In 2003,over 102,000 habitats covering nearly 19 million square kilometres,or 11.5% of the world's land surface, were under some form of protection.Though this has been a great improvement since 1962,when just 1,000 protected habitats were listed,it is still not considered enough to stop the ecocide that is endangering the world's biodiversity.
For a number of environmentalists, protecting the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots(热点地区)is critical to saving habitats and species. But many hotspots are endangered already, having lost up to three-quarters of their original plants.
The poor state of most biodiversity hotspots results directly from population growth and migration(迁移)into these areas.A study found that by the mid-1990s around 1.1 billion people had lived in these hotspots. Moreover, the annual population growth rate in these areas was 1.8%,higher than the global average of 1.4%.The PAI report concluded that human-related environmental changes would continue to put pressure on hotspots. Therefore, keeping biodiversity requires paying close attention to population size.
Protecting hotspots is not simply a matter of putting up fences or employing guards. The best results will be achieved when local people are educated about the value of wildlife, and actually gain a share of the benefits from ecotourism.Only then do they have a chance to see the benefits of protecting hotspots.
1.What can we infer from paragraph 1
A.The loss of any species can affect humans.
B.Endangered species are paid more attention to by humans.
C.Species can still survive when their ecosystems are destroyed.
D.Ecosystem protection is as important as diversity protection.
根据第一段中的“But in reality species exist only as part of ecosystems and cannot survive unless their ecosystems are protected along with the diversity they contain as much as possible.”
2.What does the underlined word“ecocide”in paragraph 2 mean
A.Ecosystem protection.
B.Reduction in the number of species.
C.Serious damage to habitats.
D.Habitat protection.
根据第二段中的“Though this has been a great improvement since 1962,when just 1,000 protected habitats were listed”和“that is endangering the world's biodiversity”可知,虽然受保护的栖息地增加,但仍然不足以阻止危及世界生物多样性的对栖息地的严重破坏。
3.What's the direct cause of the terrible state of the hotspots
A.Population growth in hotspots.
B.Migration out of these areas.
C.Global warming.
D.The global average population growth rate.
根据第四段中的“The poor state of most biodiversity hotspots results directly from population growth and migration into these areas.” 故选A。
4.What's the author's opinion on protecting the hotspots
A.It's simple to carry out.
B.It leads to the increase in tourists.
C.It's closely linked to local people.
D.It suggests that the local people be well educated.

Scientists are warning that the world's supply of hazelnuts (榛子) is being threatened by huge numbers of stink bugs (椿象) attacking Turkey.Because of their special taste, they are often combined with chocolate.Turkey grows about 70% of the world's hazelnuts.People believe the insects could affect up to 30% of Turkey's hazelnuts.
Since 2017,the country's hazelnut farmers have been battling with stink bugs which are originally from East Asia. They first appeared in Europe and North America in the late 1990s.Experts believe they arrived by accident in shipping containers coming from East Asia. But in Europe and North America, there are no insects or other animals that naturally attack the stink bugs. That, along with warm temperatures, has allowed the insects to spread rapidly.Female stink bugs can lay up to 400 eggs, which will become adults in a short time. These insects can feed on fruits and damage plants.
Farmers in Turkey are presently using chemicals to kill the stink bugs, but this may not work well.Scientists are encouraging Turkey's government to use other insects to control stink bugs. And it is recommended to introduce an insect from outside the country.
One insect that is being considered is the “samurai wasp (武士黄蜂)”.This wasp eats the stink bug eggs. But scientists must study the insect carefully to make sure it can be safely brought into the area. After all, foreign insect is what caused the problem to Turkey's environment in the first place.
But Turkey's hazelnut farmers worry they may not have much time.Last year, cold weather kept the stink bugs from coming out until the hazelnuts had already developed their hard outer shells. This year is likely to be warmer. The stink bugs may come out this year before the nuts are protected by their shells.
5.What challenge are farmers in Turkey likely facing
A.Difficulty in finding stink bugs.
B.Customers' changeable preference.
C.Less income from hazelnuts farming.
D.The government's stricter laws on agriculture.
根据第一段中的“Turkey grows about 70%...the insects could affect up to 30% of Turkey's hazelnuts.”
6.What do we know about stink bugs in Europe and North America
A.They like to eat fruits and other insects.
B.They differ a lot from those in East Asia.
C.They fit in well with the environment there.
D.They arrived there because of climate change.
根据第二段中的“...there are no insects or other animals that naturally attack the stink bugs...allowed the insects to spread rapidly.”
7.What needs to be considered before introducing samurai wasps
A.Whether they like to attack people.
B.Whether they're able to deal with stink bugs.
C.Whether they'll end up harming local nature.
D.Whether they can coexist with local insects in Turkey.
根据第四段中的“But scientists must study the insect carefully...foreign insect is what caused the problem to Turkey's environment in the first place.”
8.What are farmers probably wishing for according to paragraph 5
A.Temperatures rising slower.
B.Other crops with great earnings.
C.Hazelnuts with harder outer shells.
D.Other insects feeding on stink bugs.
根据最后一段中的“...farmers worry they may not have much time.”以及“This year is likely to be warmer....before the nuts are protected by their shells.”
