Parenting styles have changed over the years in response to the rapid changes in the world. Whether it is tapping technology or applying the best parenting practices to meet a parenting need, parents nowadays generally invest more time in finding out how best to raise their children.
Modern parents often look to the internet and social media for parenting advice. The availability of resources has helped modern parents engage more in their children’s development, both academically and emotionally. Modern parents are also more eager to find out effective parenting methods to help them raise disciplined and confident children.
A modern parenting style that has emerged is helicopter parenting, where parents are much too focused on their children. They help children with tasks they’re capable of doing on their own, like selecting activities and friends for them, or calling their teachers about homework matters. Such a parenting style can hold back the development of the children’s ability to handle responsibilities independently. Children might be ill-equipped with life skills such as doing laundry (洗衣),clearing their plates or coping with their schoolwork. Always protecting children from failures may also prevent them developing adaptability and acquiring skills like problem-solving.
On the other hand, parents in the past tended to monitor less. Children were given more control over how to manage their schoolwork and choose their friends. Domestic helpers were also not the norm then, hence children of the past were often expected to shoulder the responsibilities of caring for younger brothers and sisters and managing housework. Living in the pre-internet age, parents were less informed about different parenting methods, and their parenting styles were guided more by their personalities, common sense and friendly advice from the extended family and neighbors, rather than by social media influences or parenting websites.
There is no one right way to raise a child. Each child is unique and should be raised differently by parents who are present but not wandering, who are supportive but not controlling, and who protect but not care too much.
24.What does the underlined word “tapping” mean in paragraph 1
A.Employing.
B.Tracking.
C.Monitoring.
D.Identifying.
25.What is a distinctive characteristic of helicopter parenting
A.Flexible.
B.Efficient.
C.Conventional.
D.Overinvolved.
26.What do we know about parents in the past
A.They educated kids in a rigid way.
B.They overestimated their kids’ independence.
C.They afforded kids more space for self-growth.
D.They tended to stay away from social activities.
27.What does the text mainly tell us
A.How to raise all-round children.
B.How to enhance parent-child bonds.
C.How parenting modes have shifted over the years.
D.How information technology boosts people’s lifestyles.

My name is Alice. Early last year, I was troubled by an anxiety that crippled (削弱) my ability to do anything. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me.My perfectionist tendencies were the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at whatever I did, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me.
One day, I attended a presentation by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His presentation not only awed and inspired me, but also helped emerge an inner desire to make a difference in the world. I joined a pre presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my courage to speak one on one with him—an idea that had seemed completely impossible. This first contact was where my story began.
A month later, Brown invited me to attend the World Youth Wildlife Conference.Looking back, I now see that this would be the first in a series of timely opportunities that my old self would have let pass, but that this new and more confident Alice enthusiastically seized. Shortly after I received his invitation, applications to join the Youth for Nature and the Youth for Planet groups were sent around through my high school. I decided to commit to completing the applications, and soon I was a part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence.
I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realised that my biggest obstacle (障碍) this whole time was myself. It was that voice in the back of my head telling me that one phrase that has stopped so many people from reaching their potential: I can’t. They say good things come to those who wait; I say: grab every opportunity with everything you have and be impatient. After all, nature does not require our patience, but our action.
28.What was the main cause for Alice’s anxiety
A.Her inability to act her age.
B.Her habit of consumption.
C.Her desire to be perfect.
D.Her lack of inspiration.
29.How did Grant Brown’s presentation influence Alice
A.She decided to do something for nature.
B.She tasted the sweetness of friendship.
C.She learned about the harm of desire.
D.She built up her courage to speak up.
30.The activities Alice joined in helped her to become more____.
A.intelligent B.confident
C.innovative D.critical
31.What can we learn from this passage
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Patience is a cure of anxiety.
C.Action is worry’s worst enemy.
D.Everything comes to those who wait.

There are two distinctive types of electric buses making their way along Nanjing Xi Lu, one of Shanghai’s busiest roads. The first is a fleet of blue trolleybuses that serve bus route number 20, a line set up by a British-run transport company in 1928. They use poles to receive electricity from wires overhead and have kept the route running in this way for nearly a century. But while the historic electric buses are a reminder of Europe’s past technological innovation, the new buses traveling alongside them are symbols of China’s contemporary net-zero ambition. These modern electric buses powered by lithium batteries (锂电池) , were introduced in Shanghai in 2014. They offer a smoother ride, especially during starts and stops. Widely used across China, these buses are key to the country’s EV transition and are influencing the global shift towards green transportation.
The most recent data available shows that China in 2018 was still the second largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the global transport sector, responsible for 11%, and behind only the United States, which accounted for 21%. After around two decades of government support, China now boasts the world’s largest market for e-buses, making up more than 95% of global stock. At the end of 2022, China’s Ministry of Transport announced that more than three-quarters (77% or 542, 600) of all urban buses in the country were new energy vehicles. The speed of this transition was remarkable.
So far, however, the Chinese cities with the most successful e-bus introduction — such as Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai — all have moderate weather and are relatively flat. To take its e-bus campaign to the next level, China faces challenges. For one thing, it is difficult to bring fleets to cities such as Hong Kong, which — like London — have double-deckers. These two-storeyed vehicles are “very hard” to electrify, because they are heavier, use more energy, and so need bigger batteries, reducing the number of passengers they can carry. Cold weather is a problem, too, as it can make a battery’s charging time longer and its range shorter. The reason China has not achieved 100% electrification for its buses is its northern regions, which have cold winters, says Xue Lulu, a transportation expert at the World Resources Institute China.
32.How does the author describe the two types of electric buses in the first paragraph
A.By contrasting their historical significance and technological advancements.
B.By highlighting their roles in protecting the environment and lasting use.
C.By focusing merely on their technical details and performance.
D.By explaining their operational challenges and requirements.
33.What do the numbers in paragraph 2 mainly show
A.The global impact of carbon dioxide emissions.
B.The progress of China in reducing CO2 emissions.
C.The different emission levels of China and the USA.
D.The need for more government support in e-bus market.
34.What factor contributes to the slow adoption of electric buses in China’s northern regions
A.Poor winter weather conditions. B.Lack of transportation experts.
C.Short charging time of the battery. D.Heavier and bigger bus bodies.
35.Which column is the text most probably taken from
A.Worklife. B.Culture. C.Travel. D.Earth.

Overtourism Is For Real: How Can You Help
Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations. 36 Certainly not. The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.
●Choose mindfully. Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they’re special. With so many online posts featuring the same places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out. Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. 37 .
●Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over touristed destinations is to go somewhere else. Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it’s actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less visited options to choose from. 38 Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination’s lesser known sights
● 39 Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You’ll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸). Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place. 40 You may be amazed how much closer you’ll feel to the people there.
A.Visit during off peak times.
B.So, should we stop traveling
C.Travel for you and no one else.
D.Can overtourism be avoided then
E.You can still find relatively undiscovered places.
F.You’ll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.
G.Consider giving back to the communities you’re visiting.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet.People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs.Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy.The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara.“He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard.“I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara.“His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry.“We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one.“I tell you what we can do,” said John.“You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

When Mrs.Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. Then she said, “You may send him the popcorn every Saturday morning, if you will pop the corn for him yourself.John, will you agree to take charge of the work ” “Indeed, I will,” replied John, and he kept his word. Then the children were busy popping the corn, while their mother went out to buy the paper bags. When she came back, she brought Bernard with her.Very soon the paper bags were filled.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. And much sooner than he expected, he returned with an empty basket.Never had he earned so much money. When he found that it was all to be his, he was so delighted that he could hardly speak, but his bright smiling face spoke for him.People began to watch for the “little popcorn boy”, and every week he had at least fifty cents to take home, and often more. All this was because of John’s bright idea.

1.
M: Getting to work in the morning seems to take longer each day. I was late again this morning.
W: Are you still driving in
M: Yes. The traffic was so bad in the morning. It’s just one traffic jam after another on the road.
2.
W: I don’t know whether I can do this. It’s a long way down.
M: Don’t overthink it. All competitive swimmers need to learn how to dive. When you’ve done it once, it won’t worry you in the future.
W: OK, here goes then. Wish me luck.
3.
M: Was your trip interesting Did you have fun
W: Nothing special. Everything was expensive there. There was only “interest”, nothing interesting.
4.
W: I usually have a cup of Earl Grey tea without milk. You like Yorkshire tea, right
M: Yes, but for years I have been a firm believer in the fact that tea should be served with milk, which can send us to sleep. By the way, except Peppermint tea, which goes well with lemon.
5.
M: We were so close to fitting everything into the apartment.
W: I know. Bringing the sofa inside was tough, but we can’t make this huge bed work.
M: I’m afraid we have to give up the bed. At least we can keep this old table.
6-7:
W: What are you going to do in Canada
M: My lab is working together with a research station in Canada so I will work there for a long time.
W: How long will it take
M: Three months, probably. It’ll depend on how everything is going.
W: It’s cold there. You may need some heavy clothes. Oh, this suitcase is probably too small.
M: Don’t worry! I do most of the work in the lab. But I do need a large suitcase. I’ll take a lot of research materials with me.
W: So why don’t we go to the shop to get a larger suitcase
M: OK. Let’s go.
11-13:
It’s quite incredible how a simple hobby can turn into a fulfilling and successful career. I want to share my journey with you, starting from my love for photography. I used to take pictures of landscapes and people during my free time. It was my way of capturing life’s beautiful moments and expressing my creativity. Little did I expect that this passion would lead to a career. Over time, I improved my skills by experimenting with various techniques and attending photography workshops. Friends and family began to notice my talent and asked me to photograph their events. This was the turning point. I
started doing small jobs like capturing(拍摄) weddings, parties, and special moments. Word of mouth quickly spread, and soon, I was in demand as a photographer. As my client base expanded, so did my confidence and ambition. I realized I could turn my hobby into a full-time career. However, this journey had its challenges. The pressure of delivering perfect photos, the irregular income, and the competition in the photography world tested my patience. Now, I’ve established my own photography business, specializing in portrait(肖像) photography. I’ve traveled to beautiful places, met wonderful people, and captured countless unforgettable moments. My future plans include exploring new types of photography, teaching ambitious photographers, and continuing to find new ways to tell domestic stories through my camera.
14-17:
Welcome, everyone. For the past month. I’ve been planning your English language course. So, I’m very eager to start your class this afternoon. All week, we’ll be following a language program developed by some of the world’s best teachers. I’ve benefited from learning this approach directly from these language teachers, and I’ve taught students in business, political, and academic groups for decades. With your dedicated attention and practice, you will greatly improve your language skills like the thousands of students who have learned this course.
Now, the initial concepts are about goals, interests, and debates. While we first write down our objectives, we’ll focus on what we want to gain from this class and how we’ll achieve it. Next, we’ll make interest-based lesson plans. Think about how easily you learn about favorite topics. For me, this topic is sports, but maybe for you, this favorite topic is art, music, etc. Just imagine the hours that pass by while you’re learning something you’re passionate about. Now, we’ll try that in your target foreign language. And after following a video and reading plans based on these interests, you’ll debate these ideas in class.
This will be a great class, everyone. I can’t wait for all the learning and progress we’ll have together.
18-20:
Well, the next product I want to move onto is children’s toy. In this part of building, we manufacture several different wooden toys. But the greatest demand is for our train sets. These are made up of ten pieces and each piece is a different color. It’s a toy for the under-fives and it sells well. We manufacture 1.000 of these every week. Over here, we put all the toys into boxes. Because this is a product for young children, everything has to be very carefully checked in advance. So the average time it takes for packaging is 5 minutes per box.
We supply a lot of large department stores throughout the country. Orders are not constant, but go up and down depending on what time of the year it is. So we try to keep about 1,000 boxes in storage at any time. That’s the number that we have at the moment anyway. As I said, we deliver our children’s toys to stores around the country. Outside, we’re just loading up the lorries which are going to set off tomorrow. That’s November 3rd. then there won’t be another shipment until 10th, November.
