After a long day at work, Yuan Hui, a volunteer teacher in a village in Enshi, Hubei province, decided to stay back in the office until late. This is the 10th year of his volunteer teaching career in the Countryside.
Located deep in the mountains, the village was struck by poverty. Despite all challenges, Yuan believes that it was a precious experience growing up among his students. “I did not come here on a whim. I love teaching from the bottom of my heart,” says Yuan, who teaches a variety of courses, including history, geography and music, in different primary and middle schools in Enshi.
“Since I was a high school student, I've dreamed of being a volunteer teacher. Different from the traditional teaching style, I feel there is another way, and I hope to have the opportunity to put my ideas into practice,” he says, adding that his teaching may have a greater impact on students living in mountain villages with limited education resources. “Spreading joy and knowledge among others makes me feel satisfied. Living in the woods, I seemed to have reached a deep understanding with nature, and discovered the essence of life,” he says.
When Yuan first started teaching, he visited every student's family on the weekends. “Most of them were left-behind children, and some were from single-parent families,” says Yuan. He decided to help the children with their studies by developing good habits. “In such cases, it's important to help them build up their confidence,” says Yuan. To achieve that goal, Yuan designed a lot of activity-based courses, encouraging children to express themselves more confidently. Yuan's unique teaching methods became more popular in the county, and other schools invited him to deliver lectures. “I think I'm living a happy life,” he said in one of his lectures.
Over the past years, Yuan has won many national honors. “I think they are a result of my devotion. Only through devotion can one possess inner peace and joy,” he says.

A. Volunteering in the village brought him mental satisfaction.
B. He was unsatisfied with the living conditions in Enshi.
C. His students were left-behind children from single-parent families.
D. His dream of being a volunteer teacher started after he finished high school.
7.Which of the following can best describe Yuan Hui
A. Odd and intelligent. B. Critical and rigid. C. Devoted and creative. D. Mild and ambitious.
Officials have unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded at this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, and each one contains a unique souvenir: a fragment (碎片) of waste iron from the Eiffel Tower.
“It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, told reporters last week. “The absolute symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.”
The Eiffel Tower opened in 1889 and during the later repair work, some of the original iron was cut off and preserved over time. Now, some of those preserved metal fragments have found new homes.
Each new Olympic me dal features a piece of Eiffel Tower iron — though the signature “Eiffel Tower brown”paint has been removed. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形), which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words“Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo, which looks like a flame or the face of a woman with a bob haircut.
How did they think of such an idea Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee told the press, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. We said to ourselves, ‘Hey, what if we approached the Eiffel Tower Operating Company to see if it’s possible to get a bit of the Eiffel Tower to integrate into the medal ’”
When the Eiffel Tower Operating Company agreed to volunteer pieces of original iron, “the dream became reality,” adds Roncin.
The medals, designed by the luxury Paris jewelry house Chaumet, make people think of the Eiffel Tower in several other ways. The pieces of iron are secured by what looks like special nails that hold the structure together, and the medals’ ribbons are decorated with patterns of the tower’s latticework structure.
The iron fragments are set in recycled silver, gold and bronze disks. Over 5,000 medals are being made.
8.What does Thierry mean by saying “bring back a piece of Paris”
A. The athletes will buy souvenirs about Paris.
B. The athletes will take many photos of Paris.
C. Part of the athletes’ medal is from the symbol of Paris.
D. The Eiffel Tower will be left in the athletes’ memory.
9.What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4
A. The symbolic meaning of the hexagons.
B. The shape and material of the Olympic medal.
C. The processing technique of the Eiffel Tower iron pieces.
D. The design of the Eiffel Tower iron fragment on the medal.
10.How did the designers get the idea of adding the waste iron
A. From a strange dream. B. By asking for the public.
C. Through their discussion. D. By studying the Eiffel Tower.
11.What can we infer about the new Olympic medals
A. They are innovative. B. They are light.
C. They have six sides. D. They are golden-colored.
Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward, turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The device, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to navigate (导航) and map unknown environments.
The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人). They are made of something like the ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.
When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴) , giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted ring-bot meets a boundary- like the wall of a box-it will travel along the boundary.
The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human.
“Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.”
12.Which of the following most affects the speed of the robot’s rolling
A. The ribbon. B. The central axis.
C. The shape and material. D. The higher surface temperature.
13.How does the author introduce the new soft robots
A. By explaining the robot’s working ways.
B. By quoting viewers’ opinions.
C. By making some comparisons.
D. By offering reasons and results.
14.What is Yin’s attitude towards twisted ring-bots
A. Unclear. B. Favourable. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
15.What is the best title for the text
A. Ribbons and Their Rolling
B. The New Soft Robots
C. Three Creative Movements
D. Twisted Rings and the Axis

六、读后续写
34.There was no sign that the earthquake was coming.
A 7.8 magnitude (震级) quake almost flattened the city, killing over thousands of lives in less than a few minutes.
In the midst of destruction and chaos, a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son Daniel was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the upsetting shock, he remembered the promise he had made to Daniel: “No matter what happens, I'll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. He looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school. Everything looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to concentrate on where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son's classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stones and bricks.
As he was digging, other anxious parents arrived, heartbroken, shouting desperately: “Mary!” “Sam!”
Some other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It's too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” “Come on! There’s nothing you can do here!” “You’re just going to make things worse!”
To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now ”
And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone.
Some firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school's ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, and explosions are happening everywhere. You're in danger. We'll take care of it. Just go home!” To which this loving, determined father asked, “Are you going to help me now ”
The fire chief replied, “You’re angry and worried. I get it. But you are not helping by staying here. Just go home. We will help you find your son!” To which he replied, “But I promised my son I'll always be there for him.”
