High employment, falling inflation (通货膨胀), and economic growth. On the surface, the US economy currently seems to be doing great. But as it turns out, things are not so rosy for the average American.
According to a March 6 survey conducted by the Savings website, 47 percent of US parents provide financial support to their adult children to help deal with the cost of living struggles.
Gen Zers (aged 18 — 27) were found to be the most likely generation to get financial help from their parents, receiving on average 1,515 dollars per month. Still, many older parents were found to support their Millennial (aged 28 — 43) or Generation X (aged 44 — 59) adult children, accounting for 21 percent of parents providing support. The most common expenses mentioned were groceries and health insurance.
But why are so many US adults, both young and old, struggling to “leave the nest” One major reason is food prices. According to a survey, food prices are expected to increase by nearly 2.5 percent in 2024. Meanwhile, stable housing remains an elusive dream for many. The average rate for a 30-year mortgage (抵押贷款) was almost 8 percent in 2023, which means many Americans are priced out of affording their own home.
The final piece of the puzzle is falling salaries. Previous generations were able to count on graduating from college as the key to landing a job that paid well. But now, young graduates have found they earn less than their parents. College graduate salaries have decreased more than 10 percent in four decades after adjusting for inflation. In other words, steadily declining salaries make it even harder for young Americans to cope with rising costs.
As Gen Zers in the US struggle under financial pressures, so do the older generations supporting them, as their sharing puts their retirement at risk. The Savings website discovered that working parents were found to contribute “2.4 times more to support adult children than they contribute to their retirement accounts each month”.
Essentially, while the US economy remains afloat, we will witness multiple generations of Americans sinking in their own lifeboats in the years ahead.
24.What did the March 6 survey find out about adult children in the US
A.Nearly half of them are financially dependent.
B.Over half of Gen Zers are financially struggling.
C.21 percent of Generation X receive parental help.
D.A majority of them rely on their parents for education.
25.What does the underlined word “elusive” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A.Readily accessible. B.Difficult to achieve.
C.Often misunderstood. D.Commonly sought after.
26.What can be inferred from the article about people in the US
A.Graduates’ financial struggles are temporary.
B.Government policies favor older generations.
C.Salaries for graduates tend to keep up with inflation.
D.Financial pressures affect both the young and the old.
27.What is the author’s attitude toward the future of Americans
A.Negative. B.Optimistic. C.Ambiguous. D.Indifferent.

Do you know what a pickleball is In the last few years, pickleball has taken Europe and North America by storm.
There’re more than 200 official community clubs registered with Pickleball Canada and an estimated one million Canadians playing each month.
“Pickleball takes inspiration from tennis, badminton and table tennis,” says Hope Tolley, managing director of recreational programs for USA Pickleball. It’s played on a badminton-sized court and with a net that’s almost as high as for tennis. Players use square paddles (球拍) and a small plastic ball with some holes that’s similar in size to a tennis ball, but much lighter. Since the lighter ball doesn’t bounce as much, it’s easier to get a rally (continuous back-and-forth play) going.
Unlike tennis, you can score only when it’s your turn to serve. If your receiver fails to return the ball over the net, either from the serve or in a rally, you get the point. Be sure to hit with enough force or you’ll end up with a “falafel” — a shot that falls short of the net. Matches can be played in doubles or singles, and games are played to 11 points and must be won by a margin (差额) of two points. Lose with a score of 11 -0 and you’ve been “pickled”!
Playing the game can improve your hand-eye coordination and increase your reaction time, because you can vary the intensity — going to all lengths from the beginning or taking a slower pace. “It can be played in non-traditional spaces like gyms and parking lots,” says Tolley. “Any smooth surface will work, as long as you have a net, a ball and a paddle.”
Pickleball is easy to learn and is accessible to anyone. People who are really into the sport can join tournaments at various levels. It is the most inclusive (包容性的) game in the world. By 2030, pickleball is expected to have as many as 40 million players worldwide.

Between 1945 and 2000, educators employed a fairly uniform approach. The teacher was the sun in the classroom, and all lessons and activities centered around him or her. Educators stressed the importance of discipline and obedience (服从) within the classroom, and students were expected to follow very rigid standards for behavior and academic performance. The stated goal of this model was to ensure fairness by applying the same expectations; however, the result was that only a few students succeeded while many others were left behind.
When computers and Internet technology entered the classroom a few decades ago, another pattern appeared and progressive educators immediately saw the opportunity to change the way school worked. Instead of needing to focus on the teachers for the vast majority of the day, students could use computers, websites, and even games to learn new materials and improve their skills and knowledge. Not all educators welcomed this shift, however, as some believed it took power and
responsibility away from the teachers and cheapened the educational experience for learners.
Over the last decade, two distinct camps of educators have emerged. Tech advocates stress that computers and Internet technology allow students to learn at their own pace in an environment that makes them feel comfortable, while the traditional classroom sets a pace that many learners can’t keep up with and often makes students feel uncomfortable. Traditionalists, on the other hand, believe that over-reliance on tech limits students’ ability to develop their own knowledge and skills and does little to prepare them for the realities of being adults in the real world.
Regrettably, the inability of these two parties to find an agreement has prevented the growth of our education system. We must learn from what worked in the past while adopting the best of our new technologies to create an education system that reflects our modern world. If we can’t get all our teachers on the same page, then we will be at risk of failing future generations.
32.Who can probably learn better under the 1945 — 2000 model of education
A.Lisa who tends to read by herself. B.Michael who disciplines himself.
C.Kate who can focus on listening for long. D.Tom who prefers hands-on learning.
33.Why do some educators prefer the second education pattern
A.It allows for different learning styles. B.It has the same hope for students.
C.It fires students’ enthusiasm for learning. D.It reduces teachers’ level of stress.
34.What message is conveyed in paragraph 3
A.Two of a trade never agree. B.Everyone thinks in his way.
C.Every potter praises his pot. D.One’s words reflect one’s thinking.
35.What is the author’s understanding of a good education system
A.It’s full of well-trained subject teachers. B.It’s an accurate mirror of the real world.
C.It’s inclusive and accessible to all students. D.It’s an integration of tradition and modernity.

Photography for me has always been a key. It opens up doors, gives me an excuse to travel with more purpose, and lets me see behind the scenes. 36 —“Better get back to taking photos. Nice to chat!”
What is my advice to beginners I didn’t study photography; I’m not formally trained; 37 But that’s not what photography is about for me. If you want to be a photographer, be constantly asking yourself the question: “What is the story here ” It doesn’t matter if you are shooting a dish at your favorite restaurant or the food waste processing plant that deals with wat’s left over— 38 What does that mean If I’m photographing a dinner party for Social Supply, it’s important to capture not just the plate of food, but to step back and capture the scene around it. 39 I’ve taken hundreds of thousands of photos this year alone. The more you shoot the better you will be. So, start shooting—anything and everything, but specially your fiends’ businesses and projects.
Do I have a good camera Yes, but some people still think that the photos I post from my phone were taken on that camera, so don’t confuse a good device with being a good photographer. 40 so start there, and start today.
A.Let the story guide you.
B.I have virtually no art experience.
C.Like anything, photography requires practice.
D.Photography becomes an incredible drive to explore.
E.Some of my favorite photographers just use their phone.
F.It also helps to slip out of awkward small talk at parties.

Tionae Thomas couldn’t be prouder of her 14-year-old daughter. Plenty of people overlooked a boy sitting alone under a tree in a shopping center parking lot. But not Tionae’s daughter. The 14-year-old girl stepped in to help the stranded(滞留) boy. And the Internet is applauding this girl for her kindness!
Tionae and her daughter were on the way home. But as they passed a shopping center, Tionae’s daughter begged her to pull over. She’d noticed a boy who looked like he was most likely in elementary school. He sat all alone under a tree in a small island within the parking lot.
“It’s too hot, mama,” the girl told her mom.
So, Tionae pulled over and her daughter got out, asking the stranded boy where his parents were. But the boy didn’t know.
The kind girl let the stranded boy use her cell phone to give his dad a call. Then she suggested he move from his spot under the tree to the front of a nearby Rite Aid. She told him it would be safer. At the same time, the girl left him her phone number and told him that he could call her if necessary.
Getting back into the car with her mom, the girl asked to wait to make sure the stranded boy got picked up. She hated the idea of leaving him alone. And because of the warmer temperatures, she wanted to get him some water.
Plenty of others must have noticed the boy. Maybe they left him alone because they didn’t want to disturb or scare him. Maybe they just thought someone else would do something. But Tionae’s daughter was the only one to step in and help.
Para 1: Two days later, the girl received the boy’s call.

Para 2: And Tionae couldn’t help but brag(自夸) on her sweet girl, posting the whole story on Facebook.

You can walk to one part of the town, and it’s like India; and in another part, it’s like Europe; and in another part, it’s like China. W: Good morning! Welcome to the language center of our university. We aim at helping people improve their language ability in several languages. Now, I’ll focus on one of our programs, the English Training Program, which I think you might be interested in. The program offers year-round English courses in eight levels. It offers courses for students, scholars, and professionals. Participants can prepare for study at an American university and improve their language skills and knowledge of American culture. The strength to the program is its ability to offer courses to meet any students’ specific needs and goals. Most students in this program study full time, which consists of twenty hours a week. On the first day of the program, you take a test to determine your level. At the end of each seven-week session, your language skills are evaluated. And if you’ve made enough progress, you are promoted to the next level. In addition, you can enter the Language Center Bonus Project, which will allow you to have extra English hours with a native speaker. For more practice chances, there are also several social activities and field trips organized by the student center.

The average rate for a 30-year mortgage was almost 8 percent in 2023, which means many Americans are priced out of affording their own home.(。
根据倒数第二段的“As Gen Zers in the US struggle under financial pressures, so do the older generations supporting them, as their sharing puts their retirement at risk. The Savings website discovered that working parents were found to contribute“2.4 times more to support adult children than they contribute to their retirement accounts each month”.(当美国的Z世代在财务压力下挣扎时,支持他们的老一辈人也一样,因为他们的分担会让他们面临退休的风险。

根据第二段中“Players use square paddles (球拍) and a small plastic ball with some holes that’s similar in size to a tennis ball, but much lighter. (选手们使用方形的球拍和一个小塑料球,球上面有一些小洞,大小与网球相似,但要轻得多)”可知,匹克球和网球的共同点是它们使用大小相似的塑料球。故选A项。
根据第四段中“‘It can be played in non-traditional spaces like gyms and parking lots,’ says Tolley. ‘Any smooth surface will work, as long as you have a net, a ball and a paddle.’ (托利说:“它可以在健身房和停车场等非传统场所进行。只要你有网、球和球拍,任何光滑的表面都可以。”)”可知,匹克球可以在非传统场地如体育馆和停车场等地进行,只要有网、球和球拍,任何平滑的表面都可以玩。所以,可以在大多数开放的地方玩是匹克球的一个优势。故选D项。
31.推理判断题。最后一段中“Pickleball is easy to learn and is accessible to anyone. People who are really into the sport can join tournaments at various levels. It is the most inclusive game in the world.(匹克球很容易学,任何人都可以接触到。真正喜欢这项运动的人可以参加不同级别的比赛。它是世界上最具包容性的运动)”可推知,匹克球适合任何人,是最具包容性的运动,适合不同的人玩。故选C项。

【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了两种不同的教育模式的特点以及人们对它们的不同看法。
32.推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Between 1945 and 2000, educators employed a fairly uniform approach. The teacher was the sun in the classroom, and all lessons and activities centered around him or her.( 1945年至2000年间,教育工作者采用了相当统一的方法。老师是教室里的太阳,所有的课程和活动都以他或她为中心。)”可知,1945至2000年间,老师是教室里的太阳,所有的课程和活动都围绕着老师进行,由此可推知在课堂上能长时间专注听课的学生可能会学得更好一些。因此能长时间集中注意力倾听的凯特很可能学得好。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Instead of needing to focus on the teachers for the vast majority of the day, students
could use computers, websites, and even games to learn new materials and improve their skills and knowledge.(学生们可以利用电脑、网站甚至游戏来学习新材料,提高他们的技能和知识,而不是每天大部分时间都盯着老师。)” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“Tech advocates stress that computers and Internet technology allow students to learn at their own pace in an environment that makes them feel comfortable, while the traditional classroom sets a pace that many learners can’t keep up with and often makes students feel uncomfortable. Traditionalists, on the other hand, believe that over-reliance on tech limits students’ ability to develop their own knowledge and skills and does little to prepare them for the realities of being adults in the real world.
根据最后一段中的“We must learn from what worked in the past while adopting the best of our new technologies to create an education system that reflects our modern world.(我们必须从过去的成功经验中学习,同时采用我们最好的新技术来创建一个反映我们现代世界的教育体系。)”

40.上文“Do I have a good camera Yes, but some people still think that the photos I post from my phone were taken on that camera, so don’t confuse a good device with being a good photographer.(我有好的相机吗?是的,但有些人仍然认为我从手机上发布的照片是用那台相机拍摄的,所以不要把一个好设备和一个好摄影师混为一谈。)”提到了不要把好设备和好摄影师混为一谈,由此可知,设空处应与摄影设备和摄影师有关。E项“Some of my favorite photographers just use their phone.(我最喜欢的一些摄影师只用他们的手机拍。)”

Two days later, the girl received the boy’s call. He thanked her sincerely for her kindness and explained he had been waiting there for a long time that day and that his parents had been delayed due to a car breakdown, for which his parents felt so sorry. Touched by her kindness, the boy’s parents also called to express their gratitude and admiration for her and her mother. They were grateful that she had taken the time to ensure their son’s safety and comfort.
And Tionae couldn’t help but brag(自夸) on her sweet girl, posting the whole story on Facebook. Soon, someone shared the post and it soon went viral. People, including friends, family and even strangers, praised her for her empathy, bravery, and willingness to help a stranger in need. Her selfless acts served as a reminder that small acts of kindness can really make a significant difference to someone’s life. Inspired by her daughter’s actions, Tionae decided to organize events in the community to encourage people to help the needy at any time.
