We once lived in an old small house. One day, I found something under my bed. I picked it up and shouted,“ Mom! I found gold!” When Mom saw it, she just said,“ Carol, that's insulation(隔热材料). Now put it back.”
I felt sad. I thought that we would be able to buy a bigger house with the gold. When I put the“ gold” back, my hand touched an old book: Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations. I decided to see what was in this book.
On the top of each page was a word, such as“ Peace” and“ Hope”. I found there were many meanings for“ Light” alone. I thought it just meant a lamp or daylight before.“ Love” had so many pages, and I spent lots of time reading about it, because I never felt it. I found that Mr. Bartlett didn't have all these feelings himself, either. He recorded the words from thousands of other people. I was happy to know that some people were not afraid to talk about how they felt. This book helped me realize that other people thought about lots of things. So I didn't need to feel sorry if I thought about things a lot.
Over the years, I' ve kept the book, and to this day I often read it. I have bought a few of the newer editions(版本), but the first one is special— it has set me free. I think finding Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations under the bed was gold.
