Unit 1, Book 4 Women of Achievement
Reading: A Student of African Wildlife
Teaching material analysis
The text introduces the famous scientist, Jane Goodall, who spent many years in the forest observing and recording chimps’ activities. The text has a focus of Jane’s research. The writer begins the passage with a group’s whole day in the forest, following Jane’s way of studying chimps. The research is introduced through the eyes of a visitor. More detailed information about the research is introduced in the second paragraph, especially the research methods and findings. The third paragraph tells Jane’s continuing work to help chimps, and presents her attitudes and feelings to the animals, which actually serve as the motivation for her long-lasting research. The text ends with a summary of Jane’s achievements and influence, which couldn’t have been realized without her research.
