The day before the surgery I was off school, and my mom planned the best day of my life, everything I loved at seven and everything that would put a smile on my face. The day began with her waking me up saying,“ Kate, I have a surprise for e and see.” The surprise was a doll I had wanted for the longest time. Throughout the day, she told me everything that she thought I would need to know to grow up and be a good person; she told me to be the best I could be and that I would always make her proud. We had a picnic in the park, and it was so cold that we moved to the car. The day was filled with laughter. For the first time in a long time I could see she was really happy. I would never forget her smile, or the way her eyes sh one as if we were the same age. It was the best day of my life, and I will never forget the conversations we shared.

In today's world of modern science and medicine, a more traditional treatment is once again becoming popular— animal friendship.
It is now well- known that people with problems such as heart disease or cancer live longer and get better more quickly if they have pets. Keeping pets lowers blood pressure and makes people less worried. Animals are increasingly important in treating older people who have memory loss and other brain problems. These people often feel nervous and upset. Activities with animals help them improve their physical condition and also give them joy, entertainment and loving friendship.
Here is a case that shows the benefits of animals. John was a six- year- old mute. He had no physical problems. He just refused to talk. His older cousin, Ned, had a parrot called Sally, and John used to visit it. When he arrived, Net used to say,“ Hi, John!” We all know parrots copy what they hear. After a few visits, Sally began saying“ Hi, John!” when John came into the room. Then, one day, John turned to the parrot and replied“ Hi, Sally!” Staying with the parrot encouraged John to begin talking.
Another use of animal helpers is in schools. In some cases, animals are used to help children with physical or personal problems. In other cases, they are used to teach children to get on and share with others, and even to teach them about animals.
If you want to know more about animal help er programs, you can get in touch with organizations like Riding for the Disabled or do a search under“ animal therapy” on the Internet. You don't have to be an animal trainer or a doctor to join in.

Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don't all have the same coffee culture. In Europe, for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks(星巴克) coffee shops spread across the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop's business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company's head of marketing(市场营销).
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso(浓咖啡) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the“ feel the same everywhere” environment offered by Starbucks.
( )27. The underlined word“ ran” in Paragraph 3 probably means“ ”.
A. closed B. managed C. left D. sold
( )28. According to the passage, which is the right order for the following sentences
a. This man helped to make Starbucks a huge coffee company.
b. Starbucks began as a small coffee company in Seattle in the USA.
c. He went to Seattle to learn about the company and later worked for it.
d. Howard Schultz noticed Starbucks ordered lots of special coffee makers.
A. a-b-d-c B. c-a-b-d C. b-d-c-a D. d-c-a-b
( )29. Why did so many Starbucks close in small areas
A. Because the coffee in these places was too expensive.
B. Because the style of the coffee stores seems the same.
C. Because people like to drink coffee at home with friends.
D. Because there were too many coffee shops in one place.
( )30. What's the best title for the passage
A. The History of Starbucks.
B. The Culture of Starbucks.
C. The Popularity of Starbucks.
D. The Environment of Starbucks.

When he was walking with Spot in the park, some young boys were preparing to light the firecrackers. On hearing the big“ Boom”, Spot was so afraid that he ran into the bushes. Ted cried out Spot's name but he just didn't show up. After looking for him for an hour or two, Ted gave up and went back home.
Days passed after Spot was gone. Last week, we posted Spot's picture on the Internet and in the animal hospital around here. We hoped someone who found Spo t could bring him back to us. A few minutes ago, a man called and said the dog that stayed at his house might be Spot- he lound it two weeks ago in the street. We were so pleascd to heir it. Now, Dad is driving us to the man's house. We believe that we' ll be able to get together soon.
