“ See you at Open House tonight, Amy,” Evelyn shouted from the school bus window.
“OK!”I called back. I wished I could feel excited about my first Open House. But what would other children say when they knew my parents can't hear.
That night, my dad drove my mother and me to the brightly lit school. I led my family into my classroom. Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced my teacher to my family and explained that my parents are deaf.
“ Oh,” she said.“ Well, how do you say‘ Welcome!’ in sign language ”
“ Like this,”I swept my open right hand in toward my body, palm(手心) up.
She did the same.
“ Thank you,” Mum said, smiling.“ It's nice to meet you.”
Ms Jennings looked surprised,“ You speak very well.”
I repeated Ms Jennings’ words in sign language, so my parents could understand.
Mum nodded.“I lost my hearing as a child, after I'd learned to talk. Amy's father was born deaf. He can talk, too, but he's shy about his voice.”
Some of my classmates were watching us and talking in a low voice. Then I noticed Evelyn and her parents standing by the door.“ Hi, Amy,” Evelyn said, smiling.“I didn’t know your parents are deaf. And you can talk to them with your hands That's so cool!”
“ You think so ”I asked.
Evelyn nodded.“ Would you teach me some words ”
“ Of course.”

“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation(回声). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and I on the other side.
We were both in great anger.“ Jack! Never set foot in this house again!” shouted father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.
The street lights were shining, causing my sad feeling. I walked about and didn't know where to go.
A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree(无忧无虑的).
But now... I don't know whether it is because I have grow n up or because Dad is getting old. We are just like two persons from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door(铁门) between us that can never be opened. I walked in the streets. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. I walked on. There were fewer and fewer people on the streets. When I finally reached the apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself:“ Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me ”
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps.
All the lights were off except father's.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn't know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret. However, after an argument he has the habit of creeping up my quilt(盖被子) while I am sleeping. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on.“ Am I wrong ” With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us was not there at all. Love— it is second to none.

I strongly believe that we can have an important effect on anyone we meet. The right words at just the right time could totally change someone's life. That's what happened to me years ago.
When I was 3 years old, my parents discovered I was totally deaf. After asking many doctors, educational specialists, and parents of other deaf children, they decided to put me in a“ mainstream” school. All of my classmates and teachers would have normal hearing.
From the time I started going there in the third grade, I was the only deaf child at Blue Creek Elementary School in the small town of Latham, New York. From almost the first day there, the other kids made fun of me and called me names mainly because of my hearing aid and the way I talked.
I worried throughout elementary school because, except the problems of“ fitting in” with the other students, I also struggled with most of my schoolwork.
Although I seemed outgoing, my self- esteem(自尊心) was quite low. I saw myself as an ugly kid wearing a strange- looking box around his neck who wasn't even smart enough to keep up with the other kids.
Mrs Jordan, my fifth- grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple three- word phrase. Mrs Jordan was a large woman with a voice that bounced(反弹) off the walls of her tiny classroom. One morning, she asked the class a question.
I read her lips and immediately raised my hand. For once I knew the answer. But, when she called on me, I was afraid. I took a deep breath, stood up slowly and answered Mrs Jordan’s question in a low voice.
I will never forget what happened next.
Mrs Jordan pointed directly at me. With shining eyes and a wide smile she cried:“THAT'S RIGHT, STEPHEN!”
For the first time in my young life, I was an instant star. My confidence soared like never before.
I decided right then and there that I would make a place for myself in this world. No matter how many difficulties I might meet in life, I knew I could overcome them. A simple three- word phrase delivered with unbelievable enthusiasm(热情) had totally changed my young life.“THAT'S RIGHT,STEPHEN!”
