Diana was out shopping in a busy department store after work one evening. Just five minutes before closing time, she heard a staff member saying, “someone is having a seizure (癫痫)”: Walking quickly towards the staff member, Diana saw a fellow shopper on the ground. She had fallen and was lying on the floor, jerking uncontrollably. A small group of people had gathered to help the woman and a staff member called an ambulance. Dian a knew that she could use what she had learned on her first aid course to help as well.
Knowing it was important to keep the woman safe, one of the employees brought over a staff jacket and they put it under the woman’s head so she wouldn’t injure herself. “The seizure probably lasted only a few minutes, but it seemed much longer while it was going on,” Diana said. “When the jerking stopped, a man helped turn the woman on to her side. I then tilted her head back to help her keep breathing. After the seizure, the woman seemed not to be able to understand what we were saying and couldn’t speak. Luckily, I had learned that this can happen after a seizure and it may take some time for people to get back to normal.”
“It was such a comfort when she very tentatively answered that she was OK. By this time, the ambulance was on its way, the store had closed for the night and the other shoppers who had helped at first had left.” “We all a-greed that the woman was in safe hands with the first aider and a nurse who had also stopped to help, so I started to make my way out of the store.”
“As I was leaving, one of the store’s employees said, ‘thank you for your kindness’”. “I was very touched by her words, and I told her that I’d learned first aid in case something like this ever happened, and now it had. Even though the incident left me feeling very shaken, I was glad I knew what to do to help.”
24. What did Diana do to help the woman suffering from a seizure
A. She called an ambulance for her.
B. She helped turn the woman to one side.
C. She brought over a staff jacket to keep her warm.
D. She made sure the woman could breathe easily.
25. How did Diana feel after the incident
A. Grateful. B. Relieved. C. Anxious. D. Regretful.
26. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. Diana stayed to help when the ambulance arrived.
B. The woman could not answer their questions because of pain.
C. It was essential to learn some knowledge of first aid.
D. The employee was too frightened to offer a helping hand.
27. Which proverb can be applied to Diana’s actions in this situation
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Constant dropping water wears the stone.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

With a brain the size of a pinhead, insects possess a great sense of direction. They manage to locate themselves and move through small openings. How do they do this with their limited brain power Understanding the inner workings of an insect’s brain can help us in our search towards energy-efficient computing, physicist Elisabetta Chicca of the University of Groningen shows with her most recent result: a robot that acts like an insect.
It’s not easy to make use of the images that come in through your eyes when deciding what your feet or wings should do. A key aspect here is the apparent motion of things as you move. “Like when you're on a train,” Chicca explains. “The trees nearby appear to move faster than the houses far away.” Insects use this information to infer
how far away things are. This works well when moving in a straight line, but reality is not that simple. To keep things manageable for their limited brain power, they adjust their behaviour: they fly in a straight line, make a turn, then make another straight line.
In search of the neural mechanism (神经机制) that drives insect behaviour, PhD student Thorben Schoepe developed a model of its neuronal activity and a small robot that uses this model to find the position. His model is based on one main principle: always head towards the area with the least apparent motion. He had his robot drive through a long passage consisting of two walls and the robot centred in the middle of the passage, as insects tend to do. In other virtual environments, such as a space with small openings, his model also showed similar behaviour to insects.
The fact that a robot can find its position in a realistic environment is not new. Rather, the model gives insight into how insects do the job, and how they manage to do things so efficiently. In a similar way, you could make computers more efficient.
In the future, Chicca hopes to apply this specific insect behaviour to a chip as well. “Instead of using a general-purpose computer with all its possibilities, you can build specific hardware; a tiny chip that does the job, keeping things much smaller and energy-efficient.” She comments.
28. Why is “a train” mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To illustrate the principle of train motion. B. To highlight why human vision is limited.
C. To explain how insects perceive distances. D. To compare the movement of trees and houses.
29. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning Schoepe’s model
A. Its novel design. B. Its theoretical basis.
C. Its possible application. D. Its working mechanism.
30. What do the researchers think of the finding
A. Amusing. B. Discouraging. C. Promising. D. Contradictory.
31. What will Chicca’s follow-up study focus on
A. Inventing insect-like chips. B. Studying general-purpose robots.
C. Creating insect-inspired computers. D. Developing energy-efficient hardware.

About 50 years ago, the famous British band The Beatles sang that “money can’t buy me love”. Today, British economists are saying that it perhaps can’t buy you happiness either. This is showed by the happy planet index (HPI, 快乐指数) published recently by the New Economics Foundation (NEF) in London.
The index is about how well countries are using their resources. It shows how well they provide people with better health and longer and happier lives, and at what cost to their environment.
It would seem to be common sense that people in richer countries live happier lives, while those in developing countries are having a harder time of it. But the results are surprising, even shocking. The numbers show that some of the so-called developed countries are performing very badly. The United States, for example, comes in at an unbelievable 150th. On the other hand, some little-known developing countries are doing a much better job. A tiny island in the Pacific, Vanuatu, comes in first. There are 178 countries and areas in the index. China ranks 31.
Countries are graded on the basis of information supplied in response to the following questions. How do people feel about their lives How long does the average person live How greatly does a country need to use its natural resources—such as oil, land and water—to maintain standards This is what the index calls the “ecological footprint”.
The NEF found that the people of island nations enjoy the highest HPI rankings. Their populations live happier and longer lives, and use fewer resources.
The results also seem to show that it is possible to live longer, happier lives with a much smaller environmental impact. The index points out that people in the US and Germany enjoy similar lives.
“However, Germany’s ecological footprint is only about half that of the US. This means that Germany is around twice as efficient as the US at producing happy lives,” says Nic Marks, head of NEF’s Center for well-being.
So the happy planet index (HPI) tells us a brand-new concept of understanding “being happy”. HPI figures out different countries or individuals’ HPI through their “Ecological Footprint” and “Life Satisfaction Level” or “Life Expectancy”. Clearly, people’s HPI is related to their consumption of the resources on the earth.
You can find out your own HPI by visiting http://www.happyplanetindex.org
32. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. why money can’t buy you happiness B. in which country people feel the happiest

33. According to the passage, the index has something to do with ________.
A. wealth, education, resources and health B. lives, health, resources and the environment
C. pressure, accommodation, resources and health D. education, money, the environment and resources
34. Countries that have low HPI rankings ________.
A. have far fewer happy people B. are only developing countries
C. do not enjoy plenty of resources D. have a greater impact on the environment
35. The comparison between Germany and the US shows that ________.
A. history and culture play an important role in people’s lives
B. not all the people in developed countries enjoy happy lives
C. it is possible to live happier and longer lives with fewer resources
D. some of the so-called developed countries are performing very badly

When something goes wrong, do you tend to bounce back or fall apart Here are some strategics to help you manage a personal setback (挫折) and get back on track toward achieving your goal.
● Realize it’s normal. Less than 20 percent of people successfully achieve their goal the first time around. It’s normal and expected for setbacks to occur. 36 Knowing this, it’s important to anticipate that the main task will be how to effectively manage the setback when it arises.
● Don’t deny it. Sometimes it’s hard to recognize a setback. The problem can be staring you right in the face, but you may deny there’s any cause for alarm. 37 This inability to acknowledge the problem doesn’t mean you’re stupid. It’s just that denial can cloud your awareness of the issue. It’s important to be receptive to the honest feedback.
38 Stop and consider carefully what went wrong. The most common causes of a setback are personal worries, overconfidence, and poor coping skills. Take a look at any factor that may have contributed to the setback: where you were, who you were with, what you were thinking and feeling.
● Learn from it. Learn from your analysis of the setback, and adjust your plan to try to prevent similar things from happening the next time. Each time you fine-tune your plan and put it into action again, you actually improve your odds of eventual success. 39
Remind yourself that your setback is a slip instead of a fall. 40 After adjusting, you can still make progress toward success again.
A. Don’t take it seriously.
B. Analyze what happened.
C. You haven’t lost all of the knowledge, skills, and support.
D. In other words, it’s not whether a challenge will happen, but it’s when.
E. This is because you learn from each misstep to make your plan more effective.
F. Friends or family will voice their concerns, but you still may not be able to accept it.
G. You might even write about past experiences in a journal to guide your future behavior.

China has nearly 5,000 years of 56 (record) history. However, the history of Chinese furniture is even longer than 57 of its writing, which can be traced back to the Hemudu Culture more than 7,000 years ago.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, most of the furniture was hand-made using high-quality hardwood 58 raw materials, which are now rare and expensive. Ordinary people often use wood such as pine, elm, and beech, but the quality between the woods 59 (differ) greatly.
Classical furniture is mostly made by hand. Modern machines cannot 60 (complete) replace handwork. The shapes carved by the machine are neat but the lines are rigid and lacking vitality.
The most delicate aspect of Chinese classical furniture is the structural part of the furniture— mortise-and-tenon (榫卯) bining pieces of wood together, 61 (use) nothing more than the wood itself, is a basic skill of all carpenters (木匠) in ancient China. It was first discovered in the wooden structure of the Hemudu site 62 the ancestors lived more than 7,000 years ago. This structure is the wisdom of the Chinese working people and fully represents the 63 (create) and artistry (艺术性) of humanity.
Ancient Chinese 64 (philosophy) have been expressed in traditional Chinese furniture. “No, little girl. You can’t get in without the money.” Jeffrey, the bus driver, told a little girl who wanted to get on the bus but only had a few pennies. She must have been around seven years old, and he wasn’t in the mood to deal with unaccompanied children that day.
“Please, sir. I want to visit my grandmother,” the little girl begged. “Then go ask your parents for the money and come back next time,” Jeffrey replied and gestured with his hand for the girl to get out. She finally left the bus with her shoulders lowered. Jeffrey saw her sit down at the bus stop and drove off.
He finished his route and went home for the lunch, greeting his wife, Greta, and sitting down on the couch to rest. When he browsed his Facebook posts, an image caught his attention. A picture was shared of the little girl he had just turned away a few hours earlier. The word “Missing” was written on top of the image. He learned that the girl had disappeared a day ago, and her parents were desperately trying to find her.
“Dear! What have I done ” he asked himself, standing up and going to the front door. When Greta asked where he was going, Jeffrey said, “Greta! Quick! Call 911 and this number,” showing her the picture of the girl. “I saw this girl at a bus stop earlier, and I turned her away because she didn’t have enough money. I’m going to find her, but please make those calls.” Having told her where the bus stop was, he went out.
Jeffrey rushed to his car, speeding to the bus stop. Hopefully, the girl was smart enough to stay in one place. He couldn’t believe how careless he had been earlier. She was a little girl all alone. As he drove to the bus stop,
Jeffrey vowed to be more careful in the future, especially when it came to children.

【原文】Hello, everyone — this is your headmaster, Mr. Dodson, speaking. I’m sure you’ve all noticed the snowstorm has become worse since we arrived here at 8 a.m. The school staff and I apologize for not realizing how heavy this storm would be. It was reported that there would be 5 cm of snow. But indeed, we currently have double that amount, and it’s expected to become over 20 cm by three o’clock. So, what does that mean It will require classes to end now, at 11 o’clock. Lunch will still be served in the cafeteria; you may have it now. For senior students who have driven to school, you’re welcome to drive home, but please be careful. For everyone else, the school buses are coming at noon. You are advised to wait in the cafeteria until then. But please, for everyone in the school, call your parents to tell them what you’re doing. It’s quite a dangerous situation out there right now. And by
this evening, we’ll have almost a meter of snow on the ground. Next, wait for an announcement from our school bus driver, Jamie Johnson. He will tell you more information about bus schedules and safety advice. Thanks, everyone—and please, stay safe out there.

“The trees nearby appear to move faster than the houses far away.” Insects use this information to infer how far away things are.

The results also seem to show that it is possible to live longer, happier lives with a much smaller
environmental impact.

Each time you fine-tune your plan and put it into action again, you actually improve
your odds of eventual success.
【答案】36. D 37. F 38. B 39. E 40. C
【导语】这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了一些有助于处理个人挫折并回到实现目标的轨道上的策略。
36. 根据前文“Less than 20 percent of people successfully achieve their goal the first time around. It’s normal and expected for setbacks to occur.(只有不到20%的人第一次就成功实现了自己的目标。出现挫折是正常的,也是意料之中的。)”可知,此处是指挫折大概率是会发生的,只是早晚的区别,所以选项D“换句话说,挑战是否会发生并不重要,重要的是何时发生。”切合文意。故选D。
37. 根据前文“Sometimes it’s hard to recognize a setback. The problem can be staring you right in the face, but you may deny there’s any cause for alarm.(有时候很难察觉到挫折。问题可能就在你眼前,但你可能会否认有任何惊慌的理由。)”可知,此处是指即使朋友或家人提醒你也可能无法承认问题的存在,所以选项F“朋友或家人会表达他们的担忧,但你可能仍然无法接受。”切合文意。故选F。
38. 根据后文“Stop and consider carefully what went wrong.(停下来仔细想想哪里出了问题。)”可知,此处是指分析发生的事情,所以选项B“分析发生了什么。”切合文意。故选B。
39. 根据前文“Learn from it. Learn from your analysis of the setback, and adjust your plan to try to prevent similar things from happening the next time. Each time you fine-tune your plan and put it into action again, you actually improve your odds of eventual success.(从中吸取教训。从你对挫折的分析中学习,调整你的计划,尽量防止类似的事情再次发生。每次你调整你的计划并再次付诸行动,你实际上提高了最终成功的几率。)”可知,此处是指从挫折中吸取的教训会让你的计划更高效,所以选项E“这是因为你从每一个错误中学习,使你的计划更有效。”切合文意。故选E。
40. 根据前文“Remind yourself that your setback is a slip instead of a fall.(提醒自己,你的挫折是一次滑倒,而不是跌倒。)”和后文“After adjusting, you can still make progress toward success again.(调整之后,你仍然可以
再次向成功迈进。)”可知,此处是讲即使面对挫折你仍然具有的优势,所以选项C“你并没有失去所有的知识、技能和支持。”切合文意。故选C。

As he drove to the bus stop, Jeffrey vowed to be more careful in the future, especially when it came to children.

Finally, he saw a tiny figure sitting on the bench at the spot. Jeffery felt relieved and delighted to see the girl staying safe and sound. Trying to calm himself, Jeffery decided to talk to her gently. He inquired about her name and why she had left home. “I was going to Grandma’s house. My mom wouldn’t let me go.” Sarah replied, swinging one of her feet and looking at the concrete floor. “Your parents are searching for you, and they’ll be here soon,” he assured her, and the little girl gave him a small smile.
A few minutes later, the police and another car approached them. A woman got out of the vehicle and rushed toward Sarah. The little girl got up and ran to her, yelling, “Mommy!” The police officers approached Jeffrey and he told them the entire story and how he regretted not letting her on the bus, so he came to find her. Sarah’s parents thanked him for what he had done. From then on, Jeffrey helped anyone short on cash who got on his bus, and he always watched out for the kids that were alone because they needed someone like him to do the right job.
