Glass is a solid material that is usually clear or translucent (半透明)with different colors. It is hard but easily broken. Glass stands up to the effects of wind, rain or the sun.
Glass has been used for various kinds of bottles and mirrors, windows and more. It is said the first one was created around 3,000 BC, during the Bronze Age. Egyptian glass beads date back to about 2,500 BC. Modern glass originated in Alexandria during the Ptolemaic period, artisans(工匠)created “mosaic glass”. People used slices of colored glass to create decorative patterns.
During the 15th century in Venice, the first clear glass was invented. It was called cristallo. In 1675, glassmaker George invented lead crystal glass by adding lead oxide to Venetian glass.
In 1902, Irving first made the mass production of glass for windows possible. In 1904, a patent for a “glass shaping machine”was rewarded to Michael Owen. After that a great number of productions such as bottles, jars, and other containers were made because of this important invention.
