From the time each of my children started school, I packed their lunches. And in each lunch I packed, I left a note. The note might be a thank- you for a special moment, or a few words of encouragement for the coming test or sporting event.
When they were little, they loved their notes. And when I went back to teaching, they even put notes in my lunches. As they grew older, my elder son, Marc, told me that he no longer needed my daily notes. Telling him that he no longer needed to read them but I still needed to write them, I continued the tradition until the day he graduated.
Six years after high school graduation, Marc called and asked if he could stay at home for a couple of months. He had spent those years well, and he was very successful. He lived far away from home. With his younger sister leaving for college, I was especially looking forward to seeing Marc at home.
Since I was still making lunch every day for his younger brother, I packed one for Marc, too. Imagine my surprise when I got a call from my 24- year- old son, complaining(抱怨) about his lunch.
“ Did I do something wrong Aren’t I still your kid Don’t you love me anymore, Mom ” he asked.
I laughingly asked him what was wrong.
“ My note, Mom,” he answered. “ Where's my note ”

Winston Churchill once said,“ There's something about the outside of a horse that's good for the inside of a man.” Many health experts agree. For that reason, horses are used to treat(治疗) people, especially children with problems.
Through the years, couple John Monique Black had met many kids who needed help. Monique had had a history with horses and with young people. John had worked with children in trouble.
Because of Monique's difficult childhood, she knew that horses could bring a hand. For years Monique had dreamed of working with“ broken horses and hurting children together”. Then in 2010, the Blacks founded Mercy Spring Ranch(MSR) in California.
At the ranch(农场)
Children between the ages of 6 and 18 can join the program. The kids do ranch tasks and enjoy riding lessons and other activities. The goal is to teach life skills and to produce confidence and trust(信任) in the kids.
Why horses
One expert says that horses can make people calm down(镇定). Mercy Ranch's results have been amazing! Some children who are easy to fight with others have become calmer after staying with the horses.
When a horse feels safe, it will follow its leader. A child turns to believe in himself as he sees his achievements. Kids find that the skills needed with horses also help them in their real life.
Children and family members agree with the program. And many say it changed their lives!
One said,“ They take you in with a smile and an open heart.”
Another called it,“A safe place of help and hope.”
“I don't know where I'd be without the help of the horses,” said one boy.
And finally someone mentioned,“ Who knew a horse could teach so much!”

How important is color in the business world
Google, one of the biggest U.S.companies, is trying to find it out.The company has already found“a close connection between color and satisfaction with a person's work area”. That's according to its spokeswoman named Meghan Casserly.
“ Color is a silent salesperson,” said Elyria Kemp. She is an assistant professor of marketing at the University of New Orleans.
Kemp is following color trends in business. She is studying the connection between feelings and color. According to Kemp, when people make an evaluation(评估) of a product, usually they do this within 90 seconds or less. Besides, more than half of their first evaluation is based on(以……为根据) color alone.
That's why so many companies are researching their color choices. They are spending thousands of dollars on the research, too. Just think of UPS's Pullman brown, Home Depot's orange and Tiffany &. Co.'s blue.
Joclyn Benedetto is a spokeswoman for Tiffany & Co. She said the success of the company's jewelry(珠宝) was connected to its blue color. It is used to wrap(包装) every product. She said the color was chosen by the founder Charles Lewis Tiffany for the cover of Blue Book, Tiffany’s annual collection of beautifully hand- made jewels, which first came out in 1845.
Coca- Cola’s red color also dates back more than 100 years. The soft drink was shipped in barrels painted red.
A spokesperson for Home Depot said research showed that the first thing people thought of was orange when they heard the name of the company.
Smaller companies are also realizing the importance of color. But picking the right color is important.
“ You know when something is right because you get a feeling of safety, and it's not something that you think about. It just will hit you,” said Emil Hagopian,a distributor for Mar Plast Color Building Accessories in Ann Arbor, Mich. “ And sometimes, if it's done wrong, that also hits you.”
( )27. What is Google trying to find out
A. How to create a better work area.
B. How to become the biggest U. S. company.
C. The connection between color and business.
D. The secret of success in the business world.
( )28. Which company does Meghan Casserly work for
A. Tiffany & Co. B. Coca- Cola.
C. Home Depot. D. Google.
( )29. People usually make an evaluation of a product .
A. in a short time B. in a long time
C. based on its shape D. based on their feelings
( )30. The passage is mainly about .
A. the colors which are popular in the United States
B. the importance of color in the business world
C. the relation between color and a company's name
D. the bad influence color has on small companies

下面文章中有五处(第31—35 题)需要添加首句。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E 和 F)中选出符合各段意思的首句。选项中有一项是多余选项。
Most everyday writing is casual. We don't spend a lot of time thinking about them before we post cards or hit send. Sometimes, though, the occasion calls for something more formal(正式).
Here are a few points to keep in mind when you' re writing your own formal letter.
31.
Why are you writing What do you want the reader to do after reading your letter Do you want to change her mind or invite him to take a specific action What's the“ ask ” Once you know this, you can and should cut everything out that doesn't serve that purpose.
32.
Knowing your readers helps you choose your language and express your ideas more
clearly. Who are they What do they want to know from your writing Don't use the words that your readers won't understand.
33.
It's the writer's job to be understood. Even if your reader is highly educated, you should avoid big words and long sentences which are difficult to understand. People aren't stupid, they' re busy. Formal writing does not require the use of big words.
34.
Find a way to open with the idea or information that you most want your reader to pay attention to or act on. The first paragraph might be the only one he reads, so don't hide the“ ask” in the last paragraph.
35.
When you think you' ve finished writing, read your piece slowly and attentively. If possible, print a hard copy of your letter and read it out loud. Is it brief Is it smart Is it true Is it kind Make the changes before you hit send.
A. Keep it short. B. Read through to correct. C. Use simple language. D. Understand your purpose. E. Understand your readers. F. Lead with the most important point.

Should Students be Allowed to Take Mobile Phones to School
Now many students in my school take mobile phones to school. They often send messages to others by their mobile phones during the class or cheat in exams. It is really bad for themselves.
As for me, I don't think students should be allowed to take mobile phones to school because spending too much time on the mobile phones can get in the way of our study. What's more, we might lose the mobile phones and get into great trouble with our teachers or classmates.
All in all, student shouldn't be allowed to take mobile phones to school.
