One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa. He noticed a haze(薄雾) hanging over the city and it didn't take long for him to realize that it was a large cloud of air pollution.
At that moment, Chiwewe felt it necessary to do something about it, but didn't know what. He was a computer engineer and knew little about environmental science.
He first did research on air pollution and found that it is the world's biggest environmental health risk. He decided to work on it in a cooperative(合作的) way. He talked to scientists, officials, and engineers who helped him develop a deeper understanding of the situation, as well as an idea to improve it.
Through years of work, Chiwewe and his coworkers from South Africa and China created an online air quality decision support system(系统). According to the historical and real- time data, the system can exactly report air pollution and air quality, which can help people make better decisions about their daily movements, as well as help officials better manage their operations.
Chiwewe learned an important lesson—“a lesson we all need to take into heart
if we are to work towards a better future. Even if you' re not an expert in a particular field, your outside expertise(专业知识) may hold the key to solving problems within that field,” he said.
What if Chiwewe hadn't bothered to research the problem and do something about it What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter
As Chiwewe said:“ Why not just go ahead and deal with the problem as well as you can, in your own way You may be pleasantly surprised.”

Kurt Fuge, dressed in a white suit with coverings on his face and hands, holds a smoking cylinder(圆筒) near a box. Buzzing(嗡嗡声) fills the air, and a group of bees appear and fly into the sky.

It is a sunny afternoon and 30 parents have gathered at beekeeper Fuge's home in Virginia Beach, US. Outings like this are a monthly event for the children, aged 9 to 18. They take part in the Beekeeping Club.
Younger adults started to come to the clubs after hearing about the decline of the honeybee population. Scientists believe the drop is caused by an increased use of pesticides(杀虫剂). They' re worried about the influence this will have on agriculture and the environment.
At the youth beekeeping club, children are introduced to the wonders of bees and their hives(蜂箱). Fug e passes around some trays.“ This is honeycomb. This is where they put eggs or honey,” he says.
He explains how one large female is the hive’s queen and she mates(交配) once to produce dozens of female worker bees who make honey.
Next, it's time to put on body- and- head covering suits and help each other pull on rubber gloves to prevent getting stung(叮咬). The group walks toward a row of white hives on wood stands. A long- lasting hum(蜂鸣声) fills the air as Fuge opens the hive.

You can't always choose your room, but you can choose the things inside it. Because of that, your bedroom says a lot about your personality.
And we' re not only talking about your favourite hobbies or your taste in music and books. Of course,a guitar behind the door or science fiction stories in your bookcase give people information about you, but a careful look at your bedroom can teach them a lot more than that.
The colors in your room, for example, are very interesting. Has your room got bright colors on the walls, curtains, chairs or quilts Then you probably love trying new experiences. People with pale walls are often friendly and talkative, but people with dark walls don't like meeting new people. Black and white is a popular choice for people with strong opinions.
Why do you want to have a big wardrobe(衣柜) A big wardrobe often means that you are into fashion, but not always. It can also be a sign that you hate throwing old things away and prefer keeping everything behind your wardrobe door.
Someone with a tidy room is usually cheerful, but someone with an untidy room is often unhappy. The pictures on your walls say a lot, too. Those who are willing to give money and help like decorating their rooms with photos of their friends and family, but if your own face is in every picture or you have more than one mirror, watch out! This shows that you are probably a bit selfish.

How to prepare for the first time at anything The following ways may help you. Never try to be perfect.
It's true that you can hardly manage to do something perfectly the first time you do it. So when you do something for the first time, it is time to just have a try and never think about the result. Also, being perfect is just another excuse to things later, so trying to be perfect is just a waste of time.
Forget what others think.
In order to make you feel less stressed about your first time, just forget what others are thinking of you. First, many people don't really care that much if you happen to fail at something. Second, remember that others have also started from“ zero” as well. Third, focus on your own performance— not on others.
The time you spend doesn't matter.
One common characteristic(特征) of doing something for the first time is that more time is spent. Just be slow and try to learn as much as possible. You will realize that the second time is much easier, since you already have some experience in your pocket.
Plan and prepare.
If possible, try to plan and prepare as much as possible before doing something new. You will gain more self- confidence in this way, and by planning and preparing, you actually may control things well.
Prepare for the second time
Once you have gone through your“ first time experience”, you' ll have broken the biggest barrier of all. The excitement and fear is most likely(可能的) gone and the next time won't be that scary anymore. So you just get ready for the second time.
( )1. How many ways are mentioned to prepare for the first time at anything
A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven.
( )2. What does the underlined word“ barrier” in the last paragraph mean in
Chinese
A.障碍 B.挑战 C.烦恼 D.困难
( )3. Which of the following is not mentioned according to the passage
A. You should never mind if you do something perfectly for the first time.
B. What others think of you isn't very important if you fail to do something.
C. You can do better the second time round if you prepare well for the first time.
D. The more time you spend, the better result you will get.
( )4. What's the author's opinion
A. People should do something perfectly when they do it for the first time.
B. People may still feel excited and scared in the second time round.
C. People will become more self- confident if they make a plan and prepare well.
D. People won't get any experience if they fail for the first time.

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co- operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition“ depending on who needs it”. Nitrogen(氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi(真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons(神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.
Simard talks about“ mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on
which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down“ mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex“ tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.
“ We didn’t take any notice of it.” Simard says sadly.“ Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
( )1. The underlined sentence“ the opposite is true” in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees .
A.compete for survival
B. protect their own wealth

D. provide support for dying trees
( )2. The underlined word“ it” in the last paragraph refers to .
A. how“ tree societies” work
B. how trees grow old

( )3. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Old Trees Communicate like Humans
B. Young Trees Are in Need of Protection
C. Trees Contribute to Our Society
D. Trees Are More Awesome Than We Think

It's late evening in the middle of the winter. The snow is deep, but off I go into the wild. Suddenly, I hear it: the howl(嚎叫) of wolves. Excitedly, I walk faster in the direction of the howling.
I' ve been working as a volunteer wolf tracker in Yellowstone National Park for over a year. It's my job to follow wolves to record information about them. Like wolves, however, I don't work alone. I'm one of a team of people who have been in a project to help reintroduce wolves to the park.
Humans have always feared wolves. From fairy tales to movies, the wolf is always the bad guy—a danger to humans and other animals. In the 1920s, the organizers of the park shared this view about wolves and made the decision to drive them away from the park. As a result, the number of elk(麋鹿) in the park increased. The elk started looking for food near river banks since they didn't have to worry about wolves. This, in turn, stopped trees from growing along the rivers, doing great harm to the environment there.
The return of wolves has already made a big difference. To begin with, the elk soon learned to stay away from the rivers, so new trees have been able to grow there. The trees become home to new wildlife, such as birds, and provide food for more animals.
The park is now becoming more and more popular with those who want to see wolves in their natural environment. It has also helped the local people make more money. Tourists visit the area, stay in the local hotels, and eat in the local restaurants.
Looking at the wild animals and the beautiful sceneries around me, I am amazed at the changes the wolf has made to Yellowstone. And happily, it is playing a good guy in this story.
