While most books live by the standard— the reading pattern(模式) of front cover to back cover, dictionaries don't go by the rules. The dictionary is meant to be used in bits and pieces, not fully read. But what if the dictionary were to be read like a novel What if someone decided to take on the challenge of reading a dictionary from cover to cover Exactly how long would that take
In 2008, a man named Ammon Shea read the whole Oxford English Dictionary, the one with 20 different volumes(卷). So this task meant to read 20 books, a total of 59 million words and 21,730 pages. Ammon didn’t do it in one go. He made it his goal to finish the task in one year, spending about ten hours a day reading. He didn't count his total time as his goal wasn't to see how long it took him but simply to get it done in a year. And he did make it.
In 2017, another man named Christian Saunders took on the“ reading the dictionary” challenge. He and a team of more than 30 volunteers took turns to raise money for poor people. Christian and his partners' goal was only to read each word not their meanings, so it just took them 41 hours.
It's clear that there really is no exact answer. If you' re going to take on such a challenge, you can choose a shorter version of the dictionary as you like. Since there is no generally accepted“ dictionary”, nobody can tell you it doesn't count.

Sitting among a sea of cars, have you ever dreamed about your car taking off and flying over the road Many of us spend an hour or so stuck in traffic every week. The main problem is that we are not expanding(扩展) our transportation systems fast enough to meet ever increasing demands(需求). One solution is to create a new type of transportation that doesn't depend on roads. In the last century, planes and cars changed the way we lived. Cars which can be afforded by the general population, have allowed us to move farther. Planes have also cut travel time to faraway destinations(目的地). At the beginning of a new century, we may see the realization of a century- old dream— the mix of cars and planes or flying cars.
You might have heard news about flying cars before. The technology to make them safe and easy to fly may finally be here. With progress in lightweight material, computer models and no- man control, the dream is very close to becoming real.
Car maker Moller went public with the Skycar M400 in 2011. It is the first car that can take off and land straight. The four- seat Skycar is powered by eight engines(引擎). The cost of a car is about $1 million at first, but when it begins to be produced in large amounts, that price could come down to as low as $ 60,000.
The latest flying car CityHawk is predicted to be tested between 2021 and2022. It is similar to the Skycar except for its power source. The important difference lies in the power fans that seem much quieter on the road. TheCityHawk is about as large as a middle- sized car. It could be used as an air taxi for news collection and traffic control.
The popularity of flying cars could be very exciting or very scary, depending on how you look at it. If proper rules are put in place, they could be the answer to our ever- heavier traffic pressure.

She didn't like us, any of us. We didn't do anything to hurt her and she didn't know us. But that didn't matter. She still didn't like us.
As new teachers in the Emirati School, we Westerners said hello to her every day. She came into our office and passed by us as she shook hands with all the non- Westerners in the office. Whenever we saw her, she avoided eye contact with us.
Her friends had been fired(解雇) from the school. We were chosen to be in their place and we came from different countries. These were enough for her to have nothing to do with us.
Well after 16 months in the school, we had a secret friend gifting. To my surprise,I drew her name from the box and that meant she was my secret friend. My role was to buy her a gift and say something about her when we publicly revealed(展示) who our secret friend was.
I bought her a small potted plant(盆栽) and asked one of the Emiratis to write a little message on it. Then I sent a beautiful candle but I wrote the message in English. She needed to know her secret friend was a Westerner before the reveal day so that she was prepared.
Then came the day of reveal. We all gathered in the staff meeting room and everyone was excited. When you received your gift, you said something about your secret friend and passed the gift to him/ her. What could I say Everyone knew she didn’t like the Westerners. She taught music in the school so I said,“ My secret friend is someone who brings music to our ears every day.”I didn't even need to say her name. Everyone knew exactly who I meant.
She came forward with a huge warm and sweet smile. She hugged me and kissed me on my face and politely accepted my gift.
This was a lovely experience but I wondered how it would develop. Would she go back to avoiding eye contact with me and all other Westerners Later that day,I passed by her. She was smiling and she told me she loved my gifts. One of my Western friends told me that she too was benefiting(获益) from this change.
I reached out my hand in friendship and in return I have been met with love and friendship. Things happen for a reason. We must have faith(信念) in seeing the goodness in others. We may just need to show love to receive love.

Singer Han Hong took action to help Wuhan, the city at the center of the coronavirus outbreak(新冠病毒爆发). Han Hong had planned to hold the first concert of her 2020 national tour in Wuhan on February 29. But she called off the show and called upon people to donate(捐赠) to the city. Soon over 2 billion yuan was donated through Han Hong Love Charity Foundation which she founded in2012.

Everyone in my class was afraid of Mrs Lane, my maths teacher. She wasn't mean(刻薄的). She didn't shout. But you knew that she knew everything, especially about you. Her hair was always neat(整齐的). I never saw a strand out of place. Also, nothing in our classroom was ever out of place. The desks were always in perfect rows. Even the wastebaskets were orderly. At the end of the class, one of us would walk down the rows with the wastebasket and we would put in our waste paper.
Once as a classmate collected our waste paper, Dave suddenly threw a paper ball into the basket about 4 feet away. Mrs Lane sat at her desk, silent. Soon other kids followed excitedly. There was so much noise in the classroom. I also put up a beautiful shot. But the minute it left my fingers, Mrs Lane called my name. I felt so terrible.
“ Nice shot! I’d like to see more,” she said. The class laughed loudly. Mrs. Lane got up and took me to the door.“ Ten more shots from here. Every time you don't score a goal, you have one hour with me after school.” The class cheered when I scored and groaned(叹气) when I failed. Finally, I made three shots and missed seven. It meant seven hours of one- on- one with Mrs. Lane, with one every afternoon. I simply accepted the fact that I'd never be happy again.
It has taken me nearly half a century to understand why Mrs Lane did this: I was new to Connecticut, having moved from Miami that summer. And I made only a few friends at my new school. Here's what happened: Whether I hit the wastebasket or not, this brought my classmates' attention to me. Each shot I hit made me a bit of a hero. Each shot I missed also made me a bit of a hero. I think Mrs Lane knew what she was doing.
Day One of detention(留堂) was Thursday.
“ Come in,” she said.“ Pull up a chair.”
I did. Without looking up from her papers, she passed a plate of cookies across her desk.“ You' re probably hungry,” she said.
I was always hungry, so I took a cookie.“ Thank you,”I said.
There was a plate of cookies on her desk every afternoon for the next six afternoons. They were homemade, and they were delicious.
I wish I could say we grew close that week, but I learned nothing of her life. But I did learn maths. I grew comfortable with her.
And on that eighth afternoon, I felt a little lost as I kicked my way through fallen leaves, all the way home.
