Who How old Why How
Joris 10 He wanted to save cheetahs from the very real threat of extinction. He sold lemonade, flowers and T-shirts, and organised skating parties and a garage sale and donated the earnings to a wildlife conservation organisation.
Jake and Max 14 They wanted to make it easy for young people to find suitable volunteer opportunities. They launched a website/database to allow young people to search for volunteer opportunities.
Jackson 17 He has realised that plastic pollution is a serious problem. He serves as president of an environmental club, organising campaigns for environmental protection.
Xiao Meng 20 She loves the Forbidden City and its history. She remembered every detail of the 176 clocks in the clock gallery and works as a volunteer tour guide there.
5. Q: Is there any similarity between these volunteers
They are all pretty young.
They all care about social problems or have a passion for things in their life. They all took action and tried their best to help.
6. Q: Whose story impresses you the most Why
(Answers may vary)
7. Please answer the following questions.
1. How do you understand the title “Growing up While Making a Difference”
The meaning of the title is twofold. Firstly, these volunteers are all at a young age. As they’re getting older, they are making an influence and changing the world into a better place. Secondly, while the young volunteers make their contributions and change the world, they are also growing spiritually and making themselves a better person.
2. Find an example in the text that illustrates “making a difference”.
Joris raised more than 14,000 dollars to purchase GPS collars that track and protect cheetahs.
Jake and Max has made a big difference. An average of 100 visitors are viewing Jake and Max’s website every day and a growing number of organisations such as animal shelters and urban farming groups are requesting to be listed on the website, so that many people can have information of and access to volunteer opportunities thanks to their website.
The march and campaign that Jackson launched raised local people’s awareness of water rights and the importance of using paper water bottles.
Xiao Meng to be making her difference, as she helped visitors have a better understanding of the history behind the clocks with her knowledge and story-telling skills.
3. At the end of the text, the author says, “Volunteering gives you a chance to value
what you have and focus on the truly important things in your life.” What do you think are “the truly important things” in life
The truly important things in life can be different for different people. For Joris, it’s saving cheetahs from going extinct; for Jake and Max, it’s providing access to volunteer opportunities for young people; for Jackson, it’s raising people’s awareness of plastic pollution; and for Xiao Meng, it’s spreading Chinese culture. For us, it can be whatever we value, such as world peace, rural development, preservation of traditional culture, and soon. In other words, we may consider different things as the truly important things in life, but as long as we are doing something to help, we are all making a difference.
