Down House, home of Charles Darwin:
Fun fact
Charles Darwin, his wife, Emma, and their children lived at Down House for 40 years from 1838. Several rooms appear as if the family still live here: with croquet sets thrown into an under-stairs cupboard, a half-played game of backgammon on a side table and Emma’s knitting(毛线) left on a chair in the drawing room. Upstairs, an exhibition showcases Darwin’s voyage aboard HMS Beagle, including a reconstruction of his cabin. Outside, visitors can explore the sheltered gardens which Darwin used as an open-air laboratory, and the greenhouse in which he planted rare plants and devised botanical experiments.
No room at Down House escaped Darwin’s experiments. In the drawing room he once placed a jar of earthworms on the grand piano to see whether they could hear.
Getting there
A 15-minute drive from the A21/Farnborough. Free parking. The R8 bus from Orpington stops nearby (except Sundays) or the 146 bus from Bromley North and South terminates(终点站) in Downe village, half a mile from the property. The nearest railway stations are Chelsfield or Orpington, about four miles away.
Value for money
It’s £12(adult), £7.20(child), or £31.30(family with 2 adults). Under 5s go free.
Opening hours
Open daily 10 a.m.—6 p.m. from 30 March to 30 September; daily 10 a.m.—5 p.m. between 1 to 31 October. Opening times vary through the winter (check website for details).

14-year-old Leanne Fan from San Diego, California, was named the grand prize winner of the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s top middle school science competition.
Leanne Fan developed the Finsen Headphones, a low-cost headphone device that uses machine learning and blue light therapy (疗法) to detect and treat mid-ear infections (感染) in children — potentially preventing up to 60% of hearing loss in children. The world sees 700 million cases of mid-ear infections every year. Fan hopes that this can be an effective and low-cost treatment option for the thousands who are affected.
Fan was inspired to create the headphones three years ago while learning about Niels Finsen, who won the Nobel Prize in 1903 after inventing light therapy to treat bacterial (细菌的) infections. “I thought, ‘This is an amazing idea, and I can apply it to something else in my daily life,’” Fan said.
Fan took home the top prize, earning the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” and $25,000. She is planning to use some of the prize money to start the patent process for the headphones. Fan is optimistic that the Finsen Headphones will be able to help people in the near future.
“Being part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge was absolutely the best part of my year. I could meet scientists that are my age and going for their dreams too, and made some friends” Fan said, “I had an idea to use blue light to kill bacteria and three years later, I’m here.” She hopes to inspire other girls who want to become inventors.

CONSERVATIONISTS are hoping to create England’s biggest native woodland by planting 100,000 trees in the Yorkshire Dales.
Snaizeholme, near the town of Hawes, was covered in woodland centuries ago but the 561-hectare valley is now almost barren(贫瘠的). Across the Yorkshire Dales, total tree cover amounts to just five per cent, the Woodland Trust has said, with ancient woodland making up just one per cent of that cover.
The trust wants to raise 8 million for a decades-long program that will see a restored forest providing habitats for threatened species such as woodland birds and black grouse. Planted trees will be mostly native broadleaved species such as alder, silver birch, down birch, willow, aspen, rowan, hawthorn and blackthorn, with montane species on the higher slopes.
Al Nash, who is heading the project for the Woodland Trust, said, “I love the Dales but the one thing it lacks in many areas is an abundance(丰富性) of trees. Here we will be giving nature and biodiversity a big boost and creating a rich variety of habitats. It is a rare opportunity to create a sizeable wildlife conservation area for the north of England. It’s clearly a wonderful opportunity to create something real that can be seen and touched in the Yorkshire Dales for the fight against climate change.”
The first stage of planting has already begun with funding from the White Rose Forest, DEFRA and corporate donors. More trees than needed will be planted as not all will survive in the windswept, rainy upland valley. They will be arranged at random and without plastic guards to help stimulate natural forest growth, the trust said.
28. How does the author illustrate the problem of the woodland loss
A. By providing data.
B. By listing examples.
C. By making comments.
D. By giving explanations.
29.What is the message conveyed in paragraph 4
A. The trend of global warming.
B. The decline in variety of trees.
C. The significance of the project.
D. The campaign of restoring habitats.
30.Why will more trees than needed be planted
A. To facilitate the random growth of trees.
B. To guarantee a higher survival rate of trees.
C. To strengthen defence against wind and rain.
D. To sustain the balance between varieties of trees.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. A Breakthrough Made in Forest Growth.
B. Funds Being Raised to Plant Trees in England.
C. Conservationists Taking Action to Help England.
D. England’s Largest Native Woodland to Be Created.

Texting walkers aren’t just an annoyance to other walkers. Australian researchers armed
with movie special-effects technology have determined scientifically that they’re threats to themselves. Using motion-capture technology similar to that used for films, researchers concluded that texting while walking not only affects balance but also the ability to walk in straight line.
“Some people like checking emails while walking to work in the morning,” said the study co-author Hoorn,“but they may not know it has a serious effect on the safety of themselves.” Other facts have also proved this. A tourist walked off a pier(长堤) near Melbourne last month while texting, bringing a sudden and icy end to a penguin-watching visit. Another person who was too wrapped up in his phone to notice dangers walked straight into the fountain in front of a shopping mall.
The Australian study involved 27 volunteers, a third of whom admitted having knocked into objects while texting. They were asked to walk 8.5 meters three times-once without phones, once while reading text and once while writing text, when eight cameras recorded their actions.
They found the volunteers using the phone walked slower, and, more seriously, they locked their arms and elbows in like “robots”, which forced their heads to move more, throwing themselves off balance. “In a pedestrian environment, inability to maintain a straight path would be likely to increase potential for traffic accidents,” said Mr Hoorn. “The best thing to do is to step aside and stop, or keep off the phone.”
Authorities worldwide have taken note. Signs on Hong Kong’s subway system advise passengers in three languages to keep their eyes off their phones. Police and transport authorities have highlighted the danger in Singapore, where the Straits Times newspaper recently declared cell phone-distracted road crossing as “bad habit No.2” contributing to the rising number of road deaths. Some US states, including New York and Arkansas, are considering bans on what they’re calling phone jaywalking.
32. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “wrapped up” in the second paragraph
A. Annoyed. B. Absorbed. C. Confused. D. Absent-minded.
33. What can we learn from the Australian study
A. Ten volunteers admitted knocking into things while texting.
B. The volunteers using phones while walking moved normally.
C. The volunteers were divided into three groups during the study.
D. Texting walkers are exposed to greater possibility of traffic accidents.
34. What’s the official attitude to people texting while walking in most countries
A. Neutral. B. Negative. C. Unclear. D. Supportive.
35. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. Various walkers will get different social evaluations.
B. Communication device greatly improves people’s lives.
C. Texting regardless of time and occasion brings huge risks.
D. Texting has become the preferred communication method.
Not many people have an emergency fund even though it is essential. It will become your financial buffer(缓冲) in case something unexpected occurs. 36 You can one day tell yourself you’ll finally start saving up, but with the bills you need to pay and the other needs you must consider, your plan might fail. Here are a few aspects for you to consider when you wish to succeed in saving your rain day fund.
Usually, it is suggested that you save a total of three to six months’ worth of
expenses. 37 And if you get overwhelmed(不知所措的) by the amount you need to save, you might become discouraged and fail. To settle the issue, forget about that suggestion. You should decide how much you want to save initially. For instance, you can just start with one month’s worth of expenses. 38
Budgeting is also important if you want to be financially healthy. Note what expenses are non-negotiable such as your living expenses and food. 39 It’s not bad to spoil yourself sometimes, as long as the price is reasonable relative to your current financial situation.
40 For instance, those who wish to pursue higher education will need to budget and save up for their school expenses. Even if they go to an affordable educational institution, other school-related expenses can still be quite a lot. So, knowing how to budget will help them survive school without falling much into debt.
A. Therefore, you needed to find a way to deal with it.
B. Budgeting can help improve your academic performance.
C. And when you achieve that, then you can set a higher goat.
D. However, saving an emergency fund is easier said than done.
E. Set aside some money for some non-essential expenses as well.
F. But it’s not that easy to set aside such a huge amount all of a sudden.
G. Learning how to budget will be useful in other areas of your life as well.

When my little brother Tom was four, Mom said something like “I’d give anything to have a few more hours in the day.” And Tom said, “Why don’t we buy a bigger clock ” If time worked that way, I could have used an extra-big clock last week!
Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat. “I can’t believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh.“I have no idea how I’ll get mine done.”
I didn’t say anything. Not because I was nervous---I wasn’t nervous at all. I love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn’t work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing.
I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it’s a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the lovable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box(手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang.
It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I'd come help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love, love, love Abuela’s world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year!
I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7 o’clock when I finally got home. I planned to work on my project right after we ate. But then another interruption hit me.

My Favorite Figure in Chinese History
When it comes to my favorite figure in Chinese history, it must be Li Bai.
As is known to all, he is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of China of all times. Having rich imagination, Li Bai left more than 1,000 poems to us. Besides writing romantic poems about women, he also wrote about common things like natural beauty, places and cities and so on. The fact that Li Bai lived a wild life had made him write poems in different angles, which is why his poems could make a profound impact on the development of Chinese poems.
Personally, his poems not only cultivate my imagination but inspire me to learn to appreciate the beauty of nature.
第二节
Just as l was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it's your turn to do the dishes.” It was then that I remembered my duty. So I rushed to the kitchen with the piles of dirty plates and washed them as quickly as l could. When I was finally able to sit down at the kitchen table, it was already 8:30! At that moment, I wished that I could have used an extra-big clock for extra time! However, the truth was that no matter how hard I tried, I could not finish my whole project in such a short time. As a result, my art teacher failed me the next day.
Looking at the big“F”on my paper.I started to reflect on what I had done these days. If I had done my art project on Monday night, I could sill enjoy the baseball practice and the cookie decoration, but without delaying my project. Unpredictable things happen all the time, so the best solution is to plan ahead and take action as planned. We can't actually buy a bigger clock and have more time, but we can surely make better use of it. I failed the project, but I was lucky to have learned the lesson of "a bigger clock”.

W: My musical inspiration is the English singer, Leona Lewis. One reason I admire her is that she’s got a great voice. She also inspires me because she is so determined and ambitious. Leona was born in London in 1985. She dreamed of a career in music from an early age. She wrote her first song at the age of twelve and made her first recording when she was only fifteen years old. In 2006, she became the first female winner of the British talent show, The X-Factor and she made her first album, Spirit. Probably her greatest achievement was when she sang at the Olympic closing ceremony in Beijing in 2008 in front of a TV audience of three billion people. Another reason I admire her is that she is not only a talented and successful singer, she is also a very brave person. She always speaks her mind on important issues such as cancer awareness and vegetarianism. To sum up, Leona Lewis is my musical inspiration and an inspiration to all young people because she has already achieved so many great things in her career. She has sold millions of albums; she has won many music awards and she has appeared with artists like Take That and Mariah Carey.

根据第二段“Snaizeholme, near the town of Hawes, was covered in woodland centuries ago but the 561-hectare valley is now almost barren(贫瘠的). Across the Yorkshire Dales, total tree cover amounts to just five per cent, the Woodland Trust has said, with ancient woodland making up just one per cent of that cover.(位于霍斯镇附近的Snaizeholme在几个世纪前被森林覆盖,但现在这个561公顷的山谷几乎是贫瘠的。林地信托基金会表示,在整个约克郡山谷,树木覆盖率仅为5%,其中古代林地仅占1%)”可知,作者通过提供数据说明林地流失的问题。故选A。
根据第四段“Al Nash, who is heading the project for the Woodland Trust, said, “I love the Dales but the one thing it lacks in many areas is an abundance(丰富性)of trees. Here we will be giving nature and biodiversity a big boost and creating a rich variety of habitats. It is a rare opportunity to create a sizeable wildlife conservation area for the north of England. It’s clearly a wonderful opportunity to create something real that can be seen and touched in the Yorkshire Dales for the fight against climate change.”(阿尔·纳什是林地信托基金项目的负责人,他说:“我喜欢山谷,但很多地方都缺少树木。在这里,我们将大大促进自然和生物多样性,创造丰富多样的栖息地。这是一个难得的机会,可以在英格兰北部建立一个相当大的野生动物保护区。这显然是一个绝佳的机会,可以创造一些真实的东西,在约克郡山谷可以看到和触摸到,以应对气候变化。”)”可知,第4段传达的信息是该项目的意义。故选C。
30.细节理解题。根据最后一段“More trees than needed will be planted as not all will survive in the windswept, rainy upland valley.(由于并非所有的树木都能在大风多雨的高地山谷中存活,因此种植的树木将超过所需的数量)”可知,种更多的树是为了保证树木的高成活率。故选B。
根据第一段“CONSERVATIONISTS are hoping to create England’s biggest native woodland by planting 100,000 trees in the Yorkshire Dales.(环保人士希望通过在约克郡山谷种植10万棵树,创造出英格兰最大的原生林地)”结合文章介绍了林地流失的问题以及项目的具体开展过程。
根据文章第二段中的“Another person who was too wrapped up in his phone to notice dangers walked straight into the fountain in front of a shopping mall(另一名沉迷于手机而没有注意到危险的人径直走进了一家购物中心前的喷泉)”可知,这个人径直走进了购物中心的喷泉中,由此可以推知他太专注于自己的手机以至于没有注意到危险。
根据文章第四段中的“They found the volunteers using the phone walked slower, and, more seriously, they locked their arms and elbows in like “robots”, which forced their heads to move more, throwing themselves off balance. In a pedestrian(步行的)environment, inability to maintain a straight path would be likely to increase potential for traffic accidents(他们发现,使用手机的志愿者走得更慢,更严重的是,他们像“机器人”一样锁住胳膊和肘部,这迫使他们的头移动更多,使自己失去平衡。在步行环境中,不能保持笔直的
道路很可能增加交通事故的可能性)”可知,边走边编辑短信使步行者不能直线行走,增加了他们遭遇交通事故的可能性。故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判读题。根据最后一段“Authorities worldwide have taken note. Some US states, including New York and Arkansas, are considering bans on what they’re calling phone jaywalking.”(全世界的当局都注意到了。
通读全文,结合第一段“Texting walkers aren’t just an annoyance to other walkers, Australian researchers armed with movie special-effects technology have determined scientifically that they’re threats to themselves. Using motion-capture technology similar to that used for films, researchers concluded that texting while walking not only affects balance but also the ability to walk in straight line.”(给行走的人发短信不仅会让其他行走的人感到烦恼,澳大利亚研究人员利用电影特效技术,科学地确定行走的人对自己构成威胁。 第四段中“They found the volunteers using the phone walked slower, and, more seriously, they locked their arms and elbows in like “robots”, which forced their heads to move more, throwing themselves off balance. In a pedestrian(步行的)environment, inability to maintain a straight path would be likely to increase potential for traffic accidents(他们发现,使用手机的志愿者走得更慢,更严重的是,他们像“机器人”一样锁住胳膊和肘部,这迫使他们的头移动更多,使自己失去平衡。在步行环境中,不能保持笔直的道路很可能增加交通事故的可能性)”可知,本文主要介绍一项研究的结论:走路时发短信不仅会影响平衡,还会影响直线行走的能力。这样的行为增加了遭遇交通事故的可能性。故选C。
