教科书 书 名:冀教版英语九年级全一册 出版社:河北教育出版社 本课选自冀教版英语九年级第二单元,通过单元主题Great people可知本单元介绍了伟人及他们的生活,本课为该单元的第三课时China’s Most Famous “Farmer”介绍了杂交水稻之父——袁隆平的生活和贡献。让学生根据时间线索了解袁隆平研究杂交水稻的过程,引导学生学习袁教授刻苦拼搏的精神,获取成长进步的激励,形成正确的世界观、人生观和价值观。
教学目标
1.语言能力:通过学习Hybrid, varieties, production, introduction等词汇以及了解时间线索明线及人物内在优秀品质暗线这两条线索了解袁隆平的生平经历,复述并总结出人物传记的写作要点及注意事项,以读促写,模仿本课表达其他优秀人物。 2.文化意识:通过感受优秀人物实现梦想的艰辛过程,以及通过阅读文本中对人物全方面的刻画,学习伟人身上的艰苦奋斗精神,努力为人民、社会和国家做出自己的贡献。 3.思维品质:通过回答问题链,深度分析和理解文本,辨识句子、段落之间的逻辑关系及评价语篇内容的措辞并说明理由。 4.学习能力:通过探索时间线学会以时间轴的顺序介绍人物生平,通过绘制袁隆平梦境的图画学会用多种手段辅助阅读理解,通过多次复述学会制作解说词,通过不同平台了解背景等拓展知识,学习在不同平台检索英语学习资源。
教学重难点
教学重点: 本课的重点是让学生通过整体理解及概括主要内容,了解什么样的人能够被称为伟人并学习伟人身上的优秀品质,其次是掌握人物传记的写作要点、方法及注意事项。
教学难点:本课的难点是能够复述课文以及运用所学写出其他优秀人物的传记。
教学过程
Step 1 Lead-in Guide the students to look at the title, China’s Most Famous “Farmer”, and ask students to tell the name of the farmer, Yuan Longping. Introduce the notice that describe Longping Rice Museum wants some volunteers. Guide students to think about the question below. If you are going out for this job, how will you introduce Yuan Longping to the world Guide the students to open the book and get into the world of Dr. Yuan. Pre-reading Step 2 New words Hybrid: Begin by accessing the students’ prior knowledge about Yuan Longping by asking students to translate the phrase “the Father of Hybrid Rice” into Chinese. Then ask students to read the word after the teacher. Variety & Production: Ask students to read the synonymous sentence( a sentence with the same meaning), guess the meaning and explore the use of these two phrases “new varieties and “improve rice production” He kept developing new varieties to improve rice production. =He kept developing different kinds of rice to get more rice. The purpose of this step is to activate the known information of the students and pave the way for the following reading tasks. While-reading Step 3 Skimming Ask the students to read the text quickly, find the main idea of each paragraph and identify the genre of the text to know the two important features of a biography. Check their answers as a class. Then ask students to read the text again to draw the timeline and find the important events according to each time point. Then guide the students to focus on the numbers and the verb phrases before and after the time points while they are reading. Check and discuss the answers as a class. The purpose of this step is to guide students to obtain the main idea of each paragraph through skimming and master the genre of the text, so as to lay the foundation for summarizing the characteristics of a biography and clarifying the structure of the text. Step 4 Careful reading Read and explore the structure of the text. Activity 1 Read Para 1, Answer and Draw Instruct the students to read and find the answers to the questions. Teacher: What was Yuan Longping’s dream Ask students to underline the answer in the text. Check the answer and guide the students to think about the question: Teacher: Why did Yuan call it a “new” type of rice Ask students to read the underlined sentences again and draw this new type of rice on the paper, then invite the students to explain their pictures. In this step, the students will be guided to summarize the two features of the new type of rice, they are big and tall. Check the answers and discuss students’ works as a class first, then guide the students to summarize the first paragraph (Dr. Yuan’s dream). Activity 2 Read paragraph 2-3 and Discuss Ask the students to read paragraph 2-3 and discuss Yuan Longping’s hard work in coming up with the idea of the hybrid rice and developing new varieties. Teacher: When did he come up with an idea for hybrid rice You can think about his childhood dream. When he was a child, he wanted to grow a big and tall plant, and now he wanted to develop hybrid rice. Why Guide the students to understand the reason why Dr. Yuan came up with such an idea. Teacher: If you want to know more background information, you can scan the QR code to know more. Then he spent much of his time developing and researching new varieties. He worked most of his life growing better rice. But how did he research and develop new varieties If the students want to know about the process of researching and developing new varieties, they can scan the other QR code to see the video about it. Teacher: After watching this video, you must know how hard his work was. Just as the old Chinese saying goes, “God helps those who help themselves.” And finally he succeeded and became the father of hybrid rice. Here why did he become the father of hybrid rice Ask the students to read and underline the reasons in the text. (Answer: The introduction of this new product helped farmers produce much more rice and made China a leader in rice production. ) Ask the students to pay attention to the pronoun (reference relation) in the text. (For this, he became the father of hybrid rice. Here “this” refers to the reason.) Teacher: The technology of hybrid rice was introduced to the United States, and later, to many other countries around the world. He was really successful. But did he realize his childhood dream What is your opinion Allow students to think about the questions and then guide the students to summarize paragraph 2-3 (what he did for his dream). Activity 3 Read paragraph 4-6 and learn from Dr. Yuan Guide the students to read paragraph 4-5 first and think about what we can learn from Dr. Yuan. Teacher: What can we learn from Dr. Yuan by reading his sayings and interests Allow students to think about the answer. Then the teacher summarize and share his/her opinion. Teacher: After reading the whole passage, can you think of any other words or phrases to describe Dr.Yuan Allow the students to think about some expressions about his good qualities and find the supporting sentences or pictures in the text or from the Internet. Teacher: We should keep learning from this great scientist. But sadly, this great scientist passed away in 2021. Here why did the author use “passed away” instead of “die” We all feel sad to know his passing, so what can we do to remember Dr. Yuan Guide the students to read paragraph 6 and think about the choice of words in the text and they should also pay attention to the choice of words in their own writing. After that, the students are guided to think of some ways to remember Dr. Yuan. Allow students to think about the questions and then guide the students to summarize paragraph 4-6 (what made his dream come true). Post-reading Step 5 Summarize and Retell Guide the students to summarize how the writer organized the passage and retell the passage. Guide the students to draw a mind-map to summarize how to introduce a great person: Introduce a great person→Introduce his/her life experience in time order→Introduce his/her dream+what he/she did for his/her dream+what made his/her dream come true. Teacher: If you want to be good volunteers, you should keep practicing, now it’s your turn to tell Yuan Longping’s story to yourself by filling in the blanks first. People call Yuan Longing the “__________________”. In 1973, together with other scientists, he succeeded in_________hybrid rice.
