Cut Schools’ CO2 Emissions (排放)
The threat of climate change is attracting the attention of concerned children across the world. High levels of greenhouse gases are warming our planet and CO2 caused by humans is having a negative influence on wildlife.
How can schools reduce CO2 emissions
There are lots of ways you can take action. Talking to the local authorities (当地政府) is a good place to start as they may be able to offer support. You could also have a brainstorming discussion with your schoolmates.
Encourage schoolmates to walk to school. Traffic is a major cause of CO2 emissions, so it’s important to create a green travel plan.
Change to a renewable energy supplier that uses wind or solar power (太阳能) instead of coal or gas.
Use less energy. Get schoolmates to realize how much energy they use and encourage them to come up with practical measures.
Simple ways to save energy in schools
Here are some things you can start doing. As well as saving energy and protecting the environment, you’ll also save your school a wealth of money!
Turn heating down a degree.
Avoid leaving electronics on.
Change to energy-saving bulbs.
Turn off lights in unoccupied (空的) rooms.
Get the whole school included
Ask your schoolmates to think of ways they can raise awareness. They could design posters reminding people to do their bit.
Get one point on the Green Tree Schools Award
When you show us how you’ve reduced your school’s carbon footprint, you’ll earn one point on the Green Tree Schools Award. Check your point at learning@woodlandtrust.org.uk.

When I was 12 years old, I spent most of my free time reading. But sadly, not everyone around me enjoyed reading as much as I did, and not being able to talk about my favorite hobby with my friends made my reading a lonely experience.
In my senior year of high school, I came across a channel (频道), “Clau Reads Books” run by Claudia Ramírez Lomelí, who makes book-related content in Spanish, and was introduced to the book world of social media. I could finally hear someone else’s reaction to the stories I like. I love her videos because we prefer the same kind of books. Finally, I followed her on another social networking site, and I learned about the community on it where users blog (写网络日志) about their favorite books. I really wanted to be part of this space and seeing others being closely connected and supportive made it seem like an acceptable community. However, I doubted my ability to express my thoughts well because I was poor at creating content to interest other readers.
Therefore, I started reading blogs on how to start a new account (账户) for guidance and after weeks of researching, I learned about the necessary social media skills. I had to spend time designing small sets and finding natural lighting and household items for photo shoots, and learn how to write interesting reviews while using hashtags (话题) in posts to attract other users.
My first post was a photo of my favorite book, Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, with my hand’s shadow cast on a page. I also took pictures of several of my favorite sentences from the book and included a few hashtags to attract attention. Attracting people with similar interest was hard at first. But gradually, it became kid’s stuff. The community quickly became a good place for me to talk about my favorite books with people having the same interest.
24. Why did the 12-year-old author feel upset
A. She couldn’t spare time for play.
B. No one around her liked reading.
C. She couldn’t share her love of reading.
D. No friend was fond of her favorite book.
25. What can we learn about Claudia Ramírez Lomelí
A. She comes from Spain.
B. She taught the author how to blog.
C. She hosts a TV program.
D. She led the author to a new book world.
26. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3
A. Skills of choosing suitable hashtags.
B. The author’s efforts to attract viewers.
C. Guidance on starting new accounts.
D. The author’s techniques for creating content.
27. What does the author think of attracting people with similar interest now
A. It is easily done. B. It is hard for kids.
C. It is easier said than done. D. It needs topics about kids.
C
At this time of year, thousands of British tourists are heading to the Austrian ski slopes (斜坡), attracted not just by the snow tracks (跑道) but also by the pretty villages, great food and drink, and, the Austrian lifesaver for parents, the kid-friendly hotel. Confusing, then, a recent survey by InterNations on Expat-Friendly Places has put Austria the worst country in the world (well, out of 53 countries) for “local friendliness”.
As a frequent visitor to Austria, I must admit being confused. I’ve had many experiences there, but none that I would call the least bit unfriendly. Take my most recent trip there last weekend for example. Vienna in winter is beautiful and, if you’re lucky, you may have some
snow — despite which, the transport systems such as buses and subways continue to work well. Food markets here open early and I began at the most famous, the Naschmarkt, with its two main streets, one for restaurants, the other for food stalls (摊位). But instead of the expected rude traders, I was surrounded by encouraging smiles! So far, so friendly.
So, if Austrians are funny, how can they also be unfriendly This is the place, after all, where they invented a best-selling chocolate known as Mozart balls (after their most outstanding composer), ballet for horses (at Vienna’s Spanish Riding School), and the favourite night-time snack of sausages.
Did I say formal That is, perhaps, at the root of the misunderstanding. Austrians like going to balls and wearing their traditional clothes. They are super polite and helpful to lost tourists. That’s not to say you can’t anger an Austrian. For example, being late is not to be allowed.
My point is that you get the best of the two countries closest to them: Everything works (as in Germany) and they like to have fun (as in Italy). And I’m not alone in my opinion. According to the Global Liveability Index, Vienna is the best city to live in on the planet and it has worn that particular crown for the past 10 years. Perhaps, in this situation, the statistics (统计学) have rather missed the point.
28. Why are British tourists mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To show they are the friendliest tourists.
B. To interest us with a confusing situation.
C. To introduce the topic of tourism.
D. To compare them with Austrians.
29. What happened to the author at the Naschmarkt
A. He came across polite traders.
B. He lost his way at the food markets.
C. He was inspired to smile even in winter.
D. He was confused by the transportation systems.
30. What do we know about Austrians
A. They are serious. B. They are unfriendly.
C. They like to be on time. D. They like formal uniforms.
31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To call on Austrians to be more friendly.
B. To attract tourists to pay a visit to Austria.
C. To explain his idea of international relations.
D. To show Austria doesn’t deserve its bad name.
D
Recently, fans of self-driving cars have gotten some good news, followed by bad news. Two self-driving taxi companies got permission (许可) to run their Robotaxis in San Francisco. But a series of accidents has led to new concerns about how safe the cars actually are.
Cruise and Waymo are two companies that have been developing self-driving taxis, sometimes called “Robotaxis”. Both companies have been testing their cars in San Francisco for years. Until recently, the cars have had a human in the driver’s seat, ready to take over if there was a problem. But the newest self-driving cars don’t have anyone in the driver’s seat. They are programmed to do everything on their own, including following the rules of the road and avoiding people and other cars. Until recently, the Robotaxis could only drive in specific areas, at certain times. But in early August, Waymo and Cruise were given full permission to run their Robotaxis in San Francisco. The companies were allowed to run as many driverless cars as they wanted, 24 hours a day. And the companies weren’t required to have safety drivers in their cars.
The move was a big step for self-driving cars, and many people were excited about the change. But at the same time, there were problems. A Cruise car crashed into a fire truck, sending a person to the hospital. Later, a Cruise car stopped working in the middle of an intersection (十字路口), causing a traffic jam.
In spite of the problems, both Waymo and Cruise are planning to expand (扩展) their self-driving car service to other cities. Cruise has plans to bring their Robotaxis to at least 15 cities. Waymo says its driverless system will soon be able to work “in any city, on any kind of vehicle”.
Though the quality of self-driving cars is improving, it’s likely to be a while before most people view them as safe.
32. Which of the following is the good news for the two companies
A. They were allowed to produce as many Robotaxis as possible.
B. Their Robotaxis have passed the safety check successfully.
C. Their Robotaxis were popular with people in San Francisco.
D. They were given full permission to expand their work.
33. What do the underlined words “a big step” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The permission to develop self-driving taxis.
B. The permission to drive Robotaxis in specific areas.
C. The full permission given for Robotaxis companies.
D. The permission to drive Robotaxis at certain times.
34. What do you know about the future of Robotaxis
A. They can only be driven in big cities.
B. They are most likely to have a bright future.
C. They will be in practical use soon.
D. There will be a lot of limitations on them.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Robotaxis Move Forward but Face Problems
B. Robotaxis Start Operations in San Francisco
C. Robotaxis Will Completely Replace Taxis Soon
D. Robotaxis Are the Safest Vehicles in the World
A growing number of studies show that warming temperatures are increasing death in creatures ranging from birds in the Mojave Desert to bumblebees in North America. Researchers warn that heat stress could become a major factor in future extinction (灭绝) of wildlife. 36
It is important to have plenty of water for wildlife to drink and bathe in. 37 But even heat-loving creatures can only survive (幸存) if they can find enough water. A shallow dish of water will benefit a wide variety of wildlife. If you want to do more, you can create a tiny pond. It’s possible to make a simple one out of an old washing-up bowl.
38 A pile of wood in a shady corner will offer places for insects to hide. Heatwaves are not the time to tidy your garden either — leave any plants uncut. They’ll provide shelter and food if they’ve gone to seed.
Food is important. You can grow plants that can continually provide quality food sources. Artificial (人工的) feeding with feeders can also be a good choice. 39 Keep food dry and clean any feeders that animals come in direct contact with to reduce disease.
Reducing the heat can be another effective way. Compared to plants, concrete (混凝土) surfaces take in more heat in the day — about more than 20℃ hotter than grass. 40 Besides, in the shade of trees, surface temperatures can be reduced by around 10℃, so planting a tree in your garden will cool both you and wildlife down.
A. Hot weather can be great for some creatures.
B. So why not replace those surfaces with plants
C. Be sure what you are offering is high-quality and easy to eat.
D. Fortunately, you can give a helping hand with a few easy steps.
E. You can also help animals by offering them somewhere cool to rest.
F. How can you make your local area become more friendly to animals
G. Follow these simple tips to make sure you’re keeping animals properly.

I am in the Navy, and several years ago I was transferred from Chicago, Illinois, to Meridian, Mississippi. I was at the airport, trying to get my boarding pass and check my bags. Because I was moving, I had almost all of my possessions with me.
When I got to the counter, I found out there was a limit to the number of bags you can check without paying a fee. I had exceeded (超过) this limit by four bags. In order to get both myself and all of my things home, I would have to spend over $100. I didn’t have that kind of money with me, because I had just paid some of my bills and sent a few larger items home by mail.
The airline employee told me she couldn’t do anything to help me. So I asked her where the nearest ATM was. She told me how to find the ATM and suggested I should go to the Airport Help Point for some help.
There was just one staff member there, to whom I told my dilemma. He apologetically told me there was nothing he could do. I started to cry because I didn’t know what was going to happen next.
A fellow military gentleman was there using the amenities (便利设备), and he overheard me tell my story to the staff member. He came over and asked me for the story again. I told him, and we talked for a few minutes. He told me he was a parachuter (伞兵) in the army. I told him that my dad had been an army parachuter a long time ago. He told me to go to the ATM and see what I could withdraw from my account. So I went, but I could only pull out eighty dollars.

根据第一段中的“But sadly, not everyone around me enjoyed reading as much as I did, and not being able to talk about my favorite hobby with my friends made my reading a lonely experience.”
根据第二段中的“I came across a channel ... and was introduced to the book world of social media. I could finally hear someone else’s reaction to the stories I like.”
根据第二段最后一句中的“I was poor at creating content to interest other readers”、第三段中的“Therefore, I started reading ... for guidance”“designing small sets”“finding ... for photo shoots”和“write interesting reviews while using hashtags (话题) in posts to attract other users”可知,作者对如何创作吸引其他读者的内容不熟悉,因此作者开始阅读一些关于如何开一个新账号的网络日志来寻求指导,接着具体讲述了作者为了创作出吸引其他用户的内容所采取的一系列举措。
根据最后一段中的“Attracting people with similar interest was hard at first.” 故选A。
根据第一段第一句“... thousands of British tourists are heading to the Austrian ski slopes (斜坡), attracted not just by the snow tracks (跑道) but also by the pretty villages ...”
根据第二段倒数第二句“But instead of the expected rude traders, I was surrounded by encouraging smiles!” 故选A。
根据第四段最后一句中的“being late is not to be allowed”可知,奥地利人很有时间观念,不喜欢迟到。故选C。
根据全文内容,尤其是第二段中的“I’ve had many experiences there, but none that I would call the least bit unfriendly.”“So far, so friendly.”和第三段中的“So, if Austrians are funny, how can they also be unfriendly ”,第四段中的“the misunderstanding”以及最后一段中的“Perhaps, in this situation, the statistics (统计学) have rather missed the point.”
根据第一段第二句“Two self-driving taxi companies got permission (许可) to run their Robotaxis in San Francisco.”
根据第二段内容尤其是最后三句“But in early August, Waymo and Cruise were given full permission to run their Robotaxis in San Francisco. The companies were allowed to run as many driverless cars as they wanted, 24 hours a day. And the companies weren’t required to have safety drivers in their cars.”
故选A。
根据空后的“But even heat-loving creatures can only survive (幸存) if they can find enough water.” 故选A。

Dear Tom,
These days, I feel upset. At school I am good at maths and English, while I find physics difficult to learn. But my parents think I should always do my best in every subject. Whenever I come back home late, they will get very angry with me. You know I like playing basketball, but when weekends come, they don’t allow me to do anything except focusing on my lessons. Now I am no longer interested in my study. Can you give me some advice on how to get along with my parents
Yours,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1:
When I got back, much to my surprise, the ticket counter told me the man had paid the entire fee for me. He left without me knowing his name, phone number or address, so I couldn’t return him what he had paid. He helped me get home when I was in trouble. I was wondering what I could do to repay his kindness all the way.
Paragraph 2:
When I was waiting to claim my luggage, a familiar figure caught my eye. It was the parachuter, who happened to have been on the same flight as me. I quickened my pace to catch up with him, saying, “Hi! I want to thank ...” “It’s OK.” He cut in, holding out his hand and adding, “Nice to meet you. I’m Jack.” With a grateful smile, I grasped his hand tightly and asked him for his address. Jack smiled heartily and said, “Never mind. I just want to help those in trouble as I was once treated.” After that, he went away, leaving me in tears of gratitude. Watching his back disappear from view, I decided to pass on the act of kindness.

Text 10
W: Florence Nightingale was born into a rich family. When she was young, she took lessons in music and drawing, and read great books. As a child, she felt that visiting sick people was a duty and a pleasure. She then made up her mind to be a nurse. She went to learn nursing in Germany. When she returned to England, Nightingale started a nursing home for women. During the Crimean War (克里米亚战争) in 1854, she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was scary. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen and smelled. The officer there did not want any women to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurses stuck to work. After the war, she was honored for her services by Queen Victoria. She raised money to build the Nightingale Training School in London. Moreover, she wrote a book on public health, which was printed in several countries.
