Tech businessman Jared Isaacman, who made a fortune in tech and fighter jets, bought an entire flight and took three “everyday” people with him to space. He aimed to use the private trip to raise $200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, half coming from his own pocket.
His crew included a St. Jude worker with direct ties to the activity, representing the activity’s pillar (核心) of Hope, a professor, and another person, representing the pillar of Generosity, chosen as part of a $200 million St. Jude fundraising program. All were invited to join in donating to reach the ambitious overall campaign goal in support of St. Jude’s current multi-billion dollar expansion to speed up research advances and save more children worldwide. Anyone donating to St. Jude would be entered into a random drawing for the “Generosity” seat.
Isaacman has been “really interested in space” since he was in kindergarten. He dropped out of high school when he was 16, got a GED certificate and started a business in his parents’ basement that became the beginning of Shif4 Payments, a credit card processing company. He set a speed record flying around the world in 2009 while raising money for the Make-A-Wish program, and later established Draken International, the world’s largest private fleet (舰队) of fighter jets.
Now he has realized his childhood dream — boarding a spaceship, which was launched in Florida and orbited the Earth for three days in the history-making event. He called it an “epic (史诗般的) adventure”. “I truly want us to live in a world 50 or 100 years from now where people are jumping in their rockets,” Isaacman said. “And if we’re going to live in that world, we’d better deal with childhood successfully along the way.”
24. Why did Isaacman raise funds for St. Jude

B. To perform an act of great generosity.
C. To make his childhood dream come true.
D. To encourage St. Jude’s life-saving work.

“Is the glass half empty or half full ” This old English saying has long been used to tell a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today, the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success.
However, is this necessarily a good thing Recent studies indicate that it all depends. There is such a thing as too much positivity. It happens when someone remains in a happy and positive state and ignores any bad and negative emotions across all situations. But as a matter of fact, it is normal for us to experience any emotions. The death of a pet or loved one, a low score on a test, or a mountain of new homework should lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration and anger. If we hide these emotions just because we want to look optimistic in front of our friends and family, they can build up inside of us and end up erupting in unexpected ways. There is new evidence to suggest that many of these overly positive people are at a risk of developing drug or alcohol addictions as well as other psychological problems.
Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you. Imagine having had a bad day, and wanting to talk about it with your friend. However, instead of listening to your problems and sympathizing with you, they simply told you to “be positive” and give you the impression that your problems are being completely ignored. Just take everything as it comes and express how you really feel. This makes you human, and your true friends will always stick by you.
So my simple advice to you is to do what gives you the best “attitude” in life, whatever for you that might be. Regardless of whether a glass is half-empty or half-full, it nonetheless still has space to fill.
28. Why does the writer mention the glass at the beginning of the text
A. To give some evidence. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To present an argument. D. To explain his ideas.
29. What is the writer’s attitude to the person who remains positive across all situations
A. Negative. B. Supportive.
C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
30. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The cause of overly positivity.
B. The prevention of overly positivity.
C. The bad effect of overly positivity on others.
D. The bad impacts of overly positivity on personal emotion.
31. Which of the following may the writer agree with
A. Positivity is the key to success.
B. We needn’t stay positive all the time.
C. There isn’t such a thing as overly positive.
D. Positivity always does a harm effect to our lives.
D
An AI robot has beaten humans at a Labyrinth marble (迷宫弹珠) game, the first time a machine has shown it can master both physical flexibility and learning.
The game, which involves controlling a marble around a series of obstacles while stopping the ball falling into multiple holes, requires skill, patience and a delicate touch. Currently, Sweden’s Lars Goran Danielsson, who has played the game for 35 years, holds the record for completing the maze (迷宫) in 15.41 seconds. But a robot called CyberRunner, built by Swiss researchers at ETH Zurich, clocked a time of 14.48 seconds after just six hours of practice.
A professor at ETH Zurich said, “It’s not just about beating humans at a game. It’s beating humans at a game that requires direct physical skill and flexibility. The first model that allowed a machine to beat a human at a game was instrumental. Now what we’re doing here isn’t just to change the type of challenge. We’re adding dimensions, adding multiple boundaries to be broken.”
In the game, which was first brought to market by British company Brio in 1946, the movement of the marble is controlled through two handles. While a relatively straightforward game, it requires fine motor skills and spatial reasoning abilities, and humans require great amounts of practice to become dexterous at the game. The robot uses two motors to move the handles and watches its progress through a camera fixed above the board. Just like humans, CyberRunner learns through experience, recognising which strategies and behaviours are more promising, so that it gets better run after run, using model-based reinforcement (加强) learning.
Computer scientists were interested to find that CyberRunner’s first reaction was to cheat, finding quicker ways by skipping parts of the maze. Thomas Bi, another professor, said, “Interestingly, during the learning process, CyberRunner naturally discovered shortcuts. It found ways to ‘cheat’ by skipping certain parts of the maze. We had to step in and exactly instruct it not to take any of those shortcuts.” Experts said the new breakthrough marked the world’s first physical application of AI where it beat a human.
32. How did CyberRunner perform in the game
A. It showed flexibility both physically and mentally.
B. Its mental state was disturbed frequently.
C. It showed no interest in playing games.
D. It showed a breakthrough in human performance.
33. What does the underlined word “dexterous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Excited. B. Nervous.
C. Expert. D. Overjoyed.
34. What does Thomas Bi mean by his words
A. Experts should give CyberRunner more tips.
B. CyberRunner is good at solving problems.
C. The application of AI is falling behind.
D. CyberRunner won by cheating.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. ETH Zurich’s Robot Breaks Chess Records
B. A Smart Robot Wins in a Marble Game
C. CyberRunner: A Robot Race Winner
D. Humans Shine in a Marble Game

Many a time when you are absorbed in the plots of TV series, you may wonder in your mind what if your story is put on the screen. The biggest challenge to overcome lies in how to deliver your story. 36
Know your audience.
37 Likewise, your friends might find a story about your work boring. Keep your audience in mind and tell them a story that appeals to their interest. With people you know well, some jokes might be all right. With people you don’t know well, keep your stories as least likely to embarrass someone as possible.
38
While you may practice delivering your story for many times, try not to deliver your story as if you were reading off the paper like a robot. Be cautious of the way you speak, make your delivery seem authentic and add some personal touches to it. Instead of trying to be perfect, give yourself some room to improvise
Make your story more engaging.
When you speak as a certain character in your story, use a different voice to make it clear that the very character is speaking instead of another. As your story develops, make changes to your voice so that the audience can get engaged. 39 At serious points, slow your delivery to put your listeners on the edges of their seats.
Make comfortable eye contact.
Maintaining eye contact helps. 40 Look at someone for a few seconds, then make eye contact with the next person. Glancing between people or shifting your eyes too much can seem untrustworthy, while holding eye contact with one person for too long can make him or her uncomfortable.
A. Be mindful of your speech.
B. Below are some essential techniques.
C. Here are must-dos for TV producers.
D. Quicken your pace to describe action scenes.
E. However, you should find the delicate balance.
F. Practice your speech multiple times before delivering.
G. Amusing incidents of your friends deserve no spot at job interviews.

At San Fernando Elementary School in Los Angeles, Mrs. Levinson always did something special for her students during the holiday season. This tradition started with Jessie the Elf, a festive doll that brought small gifts to brighten people’s lives amid hardships. Mrs. Levinson knew that many of her students came from low-income families, and some of them even experienced homelessness, hunger, or abuse. She wanted to give them a sense of joy and hope, and show them that someone cared for them. Every morning, the students would find Jessie in a different spot in the classroom, holding a new surprise for them. Sometimes it was a candy cane, sometimes it was a pencil, and sometimes it was a handwritten note of encouragement. The students loved Jessie and looked forward to seeing what she had for them each day.
However, an unexpected financial crisis severely impacted Mrs. Levinson’s own resources. Her husband lost his job, and they had to pay for their daughter’s college tuition. Should she continue buying gifts for the kids or pay her heavy mortgage (抵押贷款) After a brief inner conflict, she chose to sacrifice her own needs and continued the classroom tradition, hoping that the gifts would bring some joy and hope to the kids who had so little.
Yet, what happened afterwards made her choice even more challenging. Transitioning to online classes, she discovered a heartbreaking fact: many students couldn’t attend online classes due to the inability to afford household Internet. She felt helpless and frustrated, knowing that they were missing out on their education and their connection with their classmates and teachers. She also worried about their mental health and well-being.
Just as Mrs. Levinson felt sad, she had a good idea. She decided to launch a fundraising campaign (筹款活动) on the Nextdoor App, urging neighbors to help students by covering their Internet costs. She explained the situation and asked for donations of any amount.

根据第一段中的“aimed to use the private trip to raise $200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital”及第二段中的“to reach the ambitious overall campaign goal in support of St. Jude’s current multi-billion dollar expansion to speed up research advances and save more children worldwide”可知,艾萨克曼意在通过这次旅程来为圣裘德儿童研究医院募集资金,帮助它加快研究进程,拯救更多的孩子。
根据这些内容,尤其是其中的时间状语“since he was in kindergarten”“when he was 16”“in 2009”“later”不难看出,本段按时间顺序讲述了艾萨克曼的成长经历。故选B。
根据最后一段中的“orbited the Earth for three days in the history-making event”可知,在这次飞行旅程中,他们环绕地球飞行三天。 故选A。
故选A。
根据第三段第一句“Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you.”
故选A。
根据最后一段Thomas Bi所说的话中的“It found ways to ‘cheat’ by skipping certain parts of the maze.”
37. G 根据本段的小标题“Know your audience.” 根据空后的“Likewise, your friends might find a story about your work boring.”
故选A。
39. D 根据上文中的“As your story develops, make changes to your voice so that the audience can get engaged.”
下文中的“Glancing between people or shifting your eyes too much can seem untrustworthy, while holding eye contact with one person for too long can make him or her uncomfortable.”

Notice
With the purpose of raising our awareness of mental health and guiding us to seek psychological help properly, a psychodrama show themed “you look better when smiling” is scheduled on the first Friday of March at the Concert Hall of our school.
As a creative activity, psychodramas can provide an outlet for unsolved negative emotions and a platform to display artistic talents such as directing and performing, thus injecting power and energy into our school life.
I am eagerly calling for your active participation.

Paragraph 1:
To her surprise, the campaign received much more than the target amount. Within a week, she raised enough money to provide Internet access for all of her students for the rest of the school year. She was overjoyed and grateful, and so were her students. They were able to restart their online classes and see Jessie again. They thanked Mrs. Levinson and their generous neighbors for making their holiday season brighter.
Paragraph 2:
As the story spread throughout the community, more and more people were touched by Mrs. Levinson’s kindness and generosity. They wanted to show their appreciation and support for her and her students. Some of them sent her thank-you cards and messages, some of them donated more money and resources, and some of them even offered to volunteer as tutors for the kids. Mrs. Levinson was amazed by the outpouring of love and goodwill from the community. She felt that she had not only helped her students, but also inspired others to help as well.

M: Miss Nancy, I’ve heard that you worked in Quebec for about four years before you came to Paris. Can you tell me something about Quebec
W: Well, of course. The city of Quebec is the capital of Quebec Province. It lies in the northern part of Canada. It’s the ninth biggest city in the country.
M: I see. What’s the climate like there
W: Oh, it’s very comfortable. It’s fairly warm in spring, and in summer it’s mostly bright and sunny. Fall is the most beautiful season. It’s the time to see red maple leaves. Winter in Quebec is a bit long, usually lasting about six months. In winter you can see snow everywhere, and the whole world turns white.
M: I can imagine that. Now please tell me something about the people there.
W: The people in the city are mostly French-Canadians, and about 95% of them only speak French. They enjoy a better life and live longer than most people in other parts of the world.
M: Wow, it’s such a good place. You must miss it very much, don’t you
W: Yes, but not very often. I was born in New York, and was also brought up there, so I think it’s the best place to live and work.
Text 10
W: Hello, everyone. I have great news to report. Recently, Alice Green was given a higher position in our company with higher pay. Congratulations to her! As her boss, I’ve seen her work for our company for a number of years, and things have gone quite well. First, she helped our sales department increase sales by 200% last year. Before that, we only earned 1,500,000 dollars a year. We have advertised and promoted our products at trade shows, on TV and in the newspaper, and customers really enjoyed our products and they were satisfied with our service, too. Our company has become better known, not only in our area but also in other cities. All of us know that what people say about our business to their family and friends is most important to our company. Any high technologies can’t compare with it. Besides increased sales, Alice has established a good working relationship with her colleagues. She recognizes others’ abilities and respects others’ opinions. I believe she has the ability to lead the sales department in the right direction. Therefore, she deserves the promotion and pay raise. OK, let’s welcome Alice Green to speak to us.2024—2025 学年高二上学期开学考试英语试卷
