Ross Griffiths woke up one morning only to find himself unable to speak. This five-year-old boy was only two weeks ago diagnosed (诊断) with a condition so unusual that it hasn’t been named and is instead known as 15q11.2.
Ross Griffiths has struggled to get back his communication skills, but has always been too shy to use his sign language away from home and school. But after seeing a video of Middlesbrough’s Cleveland Centre Father Christmas signing with three-year-old Mali Williams, Ross told his mum that he wanted to sign with Father Christmas, too.
Ross and his family went to see Father Christmas yesterday, along with Mali, who was invited back for a second visit. Father Christmas set up the special second meeting with Mali where he gave her a lovely doll.
As crowds of children and parents awaited the arrival of the big man at the shopping centre, Father Christmas took some time out before his duties to meet again with Mali and with Ross before going on to see all the other children.
Ross’s mum Becky Lane hoped that a visit to the special Father Christmas would help Ross get over his shyness. The Father Christmas everyone believes in even learned Makaton specially for his meeting with Ross, as this is the communication method the young boy uses.
“He was too frightened to use his sign language outside the house, but when he saw the video of the girl signing with Father Christmas, it showed him he didn’t have to be shy. He did really well. And he got a PacMan game as a gift. Now he’s not a shy boy any more,” Becky said.

Bees are cute and give us delicious things, like honey, and useful things, like beeswax. But they’ve also got those infamous stingers (毒刺). Bees can be a little scary, and in groups, they can be deadly. So when reports hit the news about Colony Collapse Disorder (蜂群崩溃症候群), some of us might have thought, what’s the big deal
What would happen if all the bees died Unfortunately, we’d lose a lot more than organic candles if bees went extinct. There are more than 20,000 species of bees in the world, Together, they are probably the most important group of insect pollinators (传粉者). If all the bees suddenly disappeared, there would be a gap in our ecosystems that would be very hard to fill. First, flowers would likely go extinct without bees. Other plants that bees pollinate might survive with other pollinators. But they would be at a disadvantage.
Some animals rely on bees for food. If we lost the bees, some of our most beautiful natural species could be next. All these changes would have chain effects throughout ecosystems and into human society. Humanity probably wouldn’t starve without bees with many of our main crops pollinated by the wind. But nutritious fruits and vegetables could be lost or become so expensive that few people could afford them. And eating healthily is hard enough as it is. It’s hard to know just how such a huge change to the natural world would end.
Luckily, this is just an imagination, right But, Colony Collapse Disorder is very real. Scientists believe human activity is to blame. The loss of bees has also been linked to the pesticides we use and to man-made climate change. And some studies showed that it’s not just bees. Insect numbers have dropped dramatically over the last few decades. Nearly half of all insect lives may have died out in the last 35 years. Bees and other bugs may be a little scary, but a world without
them would be much scarier.
8.How does the author lead in the topic in Paragraph 1
A.By listing the harms bees bring about. B.By explaining a theory about bees.
C.By reviewing the history of bees. D.By telling facts about bees.
9.Why are bees important in the ecosystem
A.They help control other insects’ populations. B.They provide honey and beeswax.
C.They serve as a key link in the ecosystem. D.They pollinate our main crops.
10.What is the possible danger if bees died out
A.Loss of biodiversity and food variety. B.Endangered insects becoming extinct.
C.Climate change speeding up its pace. D.The rapid growth of certain flowers.
11.Which can be a suitable title for the passage
A.Bees: Cute But Dangerous. B.Colony Collapse Disorder Is Real.
C.Honey: A Double Edged Sword. D.Bees Are a Threat to Humans.
Growing evidence shows that dancing can boost brain health and help manage neurocognitive (神经认知的) disorders. So what is it about dance that’s different from other regular exercises
Helena Blumen, a cognitive (认知的) scientist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, says the complex (复杂的) mental multitasking that dance requires involves various parts of the brain at the same time. Basically, dancing requires more brain power than simpler repetitive (重复的) exercises.
While scientists are still learning how the mechanisms of dancing work in the brain, a clearer picture is beginning to appear. Researchers at Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg, Germany, did MRI scans of older adults who had participated in one of two programs over a six -month period. One group practiced dance and the other did a traditional exercise program with cycling and strength training. While both groups improved their level of physical fitness, the dancers grew more white and gray matter in the parts of the brain responsible for cognitive processes. Both white and gray matter typically decline as we get older, making communication in the brain slow.
Imagine your brain is a city with loads of roads. The researchers assume the changes brought by dancing contribute to brain plasticity, which is like the city’s ability to build new roads, repair old ones or even change the direction of traffic based on how often the routes are used and what the city needs.
In addition to the physical and neurological (神经学的) benefits, dance can also help people accept what their bodies can and can’t do. Dawnia Baynes, 44, developed multiple sclerosis (MS) after her body lose all feeling from the chest down. She recently joined an online dance program for people with MS. Not only has it improved her range of motion, it has also helped her overcome her fear of being judged for how she moves.
“To see other people moving is like I’m moving,” she says, “and knowing that I don’t have to be professional and super technical in my dancing makes me comfortable with where I am right now.”
12.What does the mental multitasking involve according to the text
A.A variety of parts of the brain. B.Picturing abstract images.
C.Simple repetitive exercises. D.High level of physical fitness.
13.What does the underlined word “plasticity” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Damage. B.Location. C.Flexibility. D.Process.
14.What is the main idea of the Paragraph 5
A.Dancing is a professional exercise.
B.Dancing can benefit people physically and neurologically.
C.Dancing has improved people’s range of emotion.
D.Dancing can help people develop greater self-acceptance.
15.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Dance for Better Health B.Take Proper Exercise
C.Accept What You are D.Manage Neurocognitive Disorders
Walking has been considered as one kind of rewarding exercise. For many people, daily walking offers massive and long-term physical and mental benefits. 16 A Stanford University study found that participants were more creative when walking as opposed to sitting.
17 You’ve probably heard the phrase “exercise your creativity”. Our creative mindset is stirred up by physical movement, which is exactly why walking with your dog, a friend, or alone feeds creative thinking.
But the scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your habitual surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your
mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighborhood. 18 Even when you walk down a busy street, you can’t help but get distracted by the sweet smells from a food cart or the child pointing to a building you haven’t even noticed before.
Walking outside develops our ability to collect new ideas and take in new sights, sounds, smells, and flavors. Shinrin-yoku, a common form of relaxation in Japan, suggests that being in the forest and walking among the trees there can lower your stress levels. 19 Research has shown that
getting close to nature around your neighborhood or taking a break from multimedia increases performance on a creative problem-solving task.
So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking outdoors 20 For example, you can turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in a lake.
Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder.
A.Unfortunately, you often fail to do it.
B.Expose yourself more to your surroundings.
C.The movement during walking is obviously key.
D.Without enough energy, you cannot wonder or create.
E.But to receive the benefits, you do not have to live in a forest.
F.This habit, however, not only benefits well-being but also contributes to innovation.
G.Wandering around a park and observing people relaxing or birds singing is also a choice.

五、书面表达
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was still at school, when dad arrived home with a homeless dog. Her tail wagged all the way. Mom and dad fed her and gave her a bath. I had always wanted a dog. My parents told me when I was old enough and responsible, I could have one. Well I guess they figured the time was right.
I hopped off the bus, not knowing what awaited inside for me. I walked through the door, and to my surprise a white and black puppy with a red bow stuck to her head, greeted me with many many puppy kisses. A very special friendship was born that day.
Now she needed a name. My older brother laughed at her and said her tail was special. It doesn’t wag its tail back and forth, it goes in a circle. He motioned his finger around his ear. “She’s squirrely”, he said. Thus my puppy, Squirrely got her name. She was a smart dog. I taught her to play hide and seek. We would play for hours, spending our days learning and growing together.
Eleven years we were together, best of friends. Illnesses and old age set in on her. My parents knew what had to be done, but they stood back and let me find and make the decision myself.
She was suffering so much and the medicine didn’t seem to help anymore. She could barely walk. I looked into those deep brown eyes and realized it was time to let her go.
I carried her into the vet’s (兽医的) office, placed her on the table. Squirrely leaned her head forward, gave a lick to my hand. As if to say she understood, and stay strong. Her tail was wagging in that circle as it always did.
The vet gave her a sedative (镇静剂) first, for the final shot was given on her front paw, and that was painful. She went to sleep, but her tail still wagged.

46.Dear Alex,
Confronted with the new type of test called “continuation writing”, so bewildered do I feel that I am writing in no time to request your professional and practical guidance, as you are exceptionally experienced in essay writing.
For one thing, I feel it rather demanding to analyze the reading text accurately, let alone complete an impressive composition in such a limited time during an examination. For another, a shortage of vivid expressions to describe actions, feelings and surroundings undoubtedly becomes an enormous obstacle for me. Therefore, I’m in dire need of your assistance and advice.
I’d appreciate it if you could burden yourself with my trouble and lend me a helping hand. Hopefully, blessed with your expert guidance, I could make more progress. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

47.范文
Then the vet asked before giving the final shot, “Are you sure ” With a heavy heart and tear filled eyes, I nodded yes. The final shot was given. My eyes fixed upon her wagging tail. A matter of seconds and it stopped. The vet listened for a heart beat, and said “It’s over.” I wrapped her up in her favorite blanket, and carried her out. I took her home and buried her in the woods, where she loved playing, and chasing rabbits. It was the hardest thing I had ever done.
I didn’t go back to her grave for many years, but recently I went. Growing on her grave was a single wild flower. I sat and watched it swaying in the wind, realizing that it was swaying in a circle, just like Squirrely. I know now that, that special friend will be with me always, throwing light on my way to the future. We accompanied each other for more than eleven years, which brought both of us happiness. She always understood me, even when I unreluctantly made the final cruel decision for her.
