Many Chinese people will wonder what presents to get for their moms on Mother s Day, but not many know Mother s Day is actually a festival from overseas.
Mother s Day originated (起源) in America during the early 20th century. The festival spread to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted.
Why did a foreign festival become popular in China In fact, traditional Chinese culture has always encouraged filial (孝顺的) devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of "Taste Liquid (液体的) Medicine for Mother" tells us the filial virtue (美德) of Emperor Wen of the Western Han dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, a mother s love is a repeated subject in ancient Chinese poems, like "Song of the Parting Son" by Meng Jiao, a poet of the Tang dynasty. Now this poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion.
On special days, people often use roses or forget-me-nots to express love. Carnations are considered as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own flower for mothers—the tiger lily.
Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.

For some people, choosing to be scared can be fun. Dr. Margee Kerr does research on fear. She tries to find out what scares people and why and loves to scare herself as part of her research. She says she has the best job in the world.
"Some people like to be scared because they like the way their body changes, "she says. "Think of how excited you are when you're going to a birthday party. Some feel the same when they watch a scary movie or visit a haunted house."
Fear is also a tool that the brain uses to keep the body safe. It urges (敦促) a person to hide, run away, or protect oneself. For example, babies don't understand what might hurt them. As babies grow, they learn what's unsafe, and their brains store those memories. Then their brains use fear to warn them of dangers. "We don't want to be fearless, "Dr. Kerr says. "It's good to have a healthy sense of what's dangerous!"
Many people have beaten their own fears. One method: instead of listening to their imagination, they learn the facts about anything that seems scary. Knowledge can help a person feel less afraid.
Dr. Kerr grew up on a farm. As a seven-year-old, she was scared of black bears in the forest. Later, she read about them. "Understanding the facts gave me a sense of confidence," she says. "I knew for sure what to do if I ever met a bear and how to protect myself."
25.What does Dr. Kerr think of her job
A. Easy. B. Strange. C. Enjoyable. D. Dangerous.

28.The underlined word "confidence" in the last paragraph means "______" in Chinese.
A. 责任 B. 自信 C. 解脱 D. 愧疚
29.The writer uses Dr. Kerr's experience as a child to show ______.

B. black bears aren't dangerous at all
C. it's important to imagine as a child
D. knowledge can help beat one's fear
四、任务型阅读-多任务混合:本大题共1小题,共10分。
30. In the United States, most children's birthday parties are held in the home of the birthday boy or girl. It used to be that children's parties were just for children. Parents would drop their kids off and come back when the party was over to take them home. Now, it is more common for the parents' guests to stay at the party as well. This gives the adults time and space to socialize (交往) while the kids play games.
Kids and adults don't always have the same tastes in food. So when adults are invited to stay at a child's birthday party, there is usually different food for the adults, like cheese, crackers (薄脆饼干), and fruit platters. Meanwhile, the kids eat hot dogs and potato chips. Parents may drink cocktails, beer, or wine.
Party games are not just for the kids, either. While the children play traditional games like "pin the tail on the donkey", the adults may dance or play card games, like blackjack (21点纸牌游戏) or poker. Some people worry about adults, getting drunk in front of the kids.
