Step 2 练习巩固 (教材P20 课文4a, 4b, 4c)
Section A
第一课时(1a-2d)
Study of the Text
What:
This section contains four conversations about asking for directions, giving directions, and playground activities. The first two conversations are about asking for directions and giving directions in the street, the third one is about asking for directions and giving directions in a large shopping mall, and the fourth one is about Alice and He Wei in a playground, where a misunderstanding is caused by the word “restroom”.
Why:
1a guides students to match places with activities. 1b and 1c train students to politely ask for directions and give directions. 2a-2c further develop listening and speaking skills, enrich the topic of asking for directions, and train students to ask for information politely and respond enthusiastically. 2d is a conversation in the playground which helps further master the grammar structure “objective clauses with special question words” of this unit.
How:
The four dialogues, respectively, on shopping in the mall, amusement park visits and other scenes that are close to daily life, through the language training such as asking for directions and giving directions, enable students to correctly use objective clauses with wh-questions, and politely use the target language in specific contexts.
Teaching Objectives
1.Be able to understand the sentence patterns of asking for directions, perceive the structure of “objective clauses with special question words”, and learn to ask for directions politely by following the examples.
2.To recognize the linguistic differences between Chinese and English by asking for directions politely and giving directions enthusiastically, and cultivate the good communication quality of civilized language in different occasions.
Teaching Focus and Difficulty
Teaching Focus:
1.To skillfully grasp the target sentence patterns “Could you please… ”, “Do you know… ”, etc.
2.To use the target language appropriately in specific contexts to improve listening and speaking skills.
Teaching Difficulty:
Learn and master the use of “objective clauses with special question words”.
Teaching Process
Step 1 Lead-in
1.Greeting.
2.Guessing game.
Show pictures to the whole class. One student explains the place in English and another one who doesn't look at the blackboard guesses what place it is. For example, one student says, “We can save money or exchange money in this place.” Then another one guesses it is a bank. Get students to guess the places like the bookstore, restaurant, bank, post office, supermarket, museum, bathroom, washroom, mall and so on.
3.Show some stamps to students and present the new sentences:
Could you tell me where we can buy some stamps and post a letter (In a post office!)
Could you tell me where we can save or take out some money (In a bank!)
Do you know where I can get some magazines (In a bookstore!)
Step 2 Presentation (1a)
1.Look at the picture in 1a and tell the places you see.
T: What places can you see in the picture
2.What can you do in these places
3.Where can you do the things below Match each thing with a place in the picture. Many different answers are possible.
4.What are they doing
Purpose Before listening, understand the listening topic according to the picture, catch the key information, and develop students' ability of pre-listening prediction.
Step 3 Listening (1b)
1.Listen and complete the conversations in the picture in 1a.
2.Listen again and fill in the blanks.(详见课件资源)
Purpose Listening questions that are set in a fill-in-the-blank format to further develop students' ability to grasp key information and pay attention to polite phrases of utterance.
Step 4 Pair-work (1c)
Make conversations using the information in 1a. Then talk about your own town/city.
A: Excuse me, could you please tell me how to get to the bookstore
B: Sure, just go along Main Street until you pass Center Street. The bookstore is on your right, beside the bank.
A: Thanks. Do you know when the bookstore closes today
B: It closes at 7:00 p.m. today.
Step 5 Listening (2a-2b)
1.Look at the picture in 2a.
What place does the picture show
What shops can we see in the picture
2.Listen. You will hear some of the directions below. Number the directions in the order you hear them.
Go to the third floor.
② Turn left.
① Go to the second floor.
Turn right.
④ The supermarket is between the flower store and the bookstore.
③ Go past the bookstore.
3.Listen again. Draw a line in the picture in 2a to show how the boy walks to the supermarket.
4.Listen and fill in the blanks.
Boy 1: Excuse me, can you tell me where I can buy some medicine
Boy 2: Yes, there's a supermarket in this shopping center.
Boy 1: Do you know how to go there
Boy 2: Yes. Go to the second floor and then…then turn left . Let's see…Then go past the bookstore. And umm…the supermarket is between the flower store and the bookstore. You should be able to get medicine there.
Boy 1: OK, great. Oh, and one more thing. Do you know when this shopping center closes tonight
Boy 2: I'm not sure, but you can ask for information over there.
Boy 1: OK, thanks a lot.
Boy 2: You're welcome.
Purpose Focus on the locations and places shown in the picture to develop the ability to “see”. Lay a vocabulary foundation for listening. The pre-listening prediction reduces the difficulty of 2a and 2b, and uses the listening strategy of focusing on key information and paying attention to details in listening to complete the listening training.
Step 6 Practice (2c)
1.Get the students to make conversations about the other places in the picture in 2a.
2.Check their work with several pairs.
Step 7 Role-play (2d)
1.Read for the main idea of 2d.
The main idea of 2d is where Alice wants to go.
2.Read for the specific ideas of 2d.
Read the conversation again and answer the following questions.
(1)Where are He Wei and Alice

Study of the Text
What:
This is a long conversation taking He Wei and Alice going to an amusement park as an entry point, which is a branch of reading and contains more oral features than passage-based discourse content. It is typically characterized by interspersing some succinct texts in the conversation to explain the background, illustrate the scene or the context, and so on.

The process from language learning to language use is fully realized.
How:
From table examples to modeling exercises, from writing and matching activities to oral discussions, from scenario creation to oral communication activities, etc., scenario-based practical activities on objective clauses are presented in a variety of practice formats, which ultimately enable students to appropriately and flexibly utilize the target sentence types in daily life and communication.
