Many people around me make a difference to the world on a daily basis — being kind in unexpected ways and sharing the generosity of their lives with others. I, like many of them, volunteer some of my time in order to give back just a little of what I am so blessed to have. I volunteered to go to Guatemala with an eyeglass team from International Relief Teams — an organization I have supported in other ways for many years.
Our team went to a small town in Guatemala, San Augustin. We set up our tables and
packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard of a clinic, put up the Snellen chart (an eye chart) on a wall, and began our work.
Young and old people came from many of the surrounding towns. Most had never received an eye exam before. They waited for hours patiently in the sun, never complaining. If we could help them out, their thankfulness for a simple pair of glasses was overwhelming. Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, and even these people expressed their gratitude sincerely. All of them were very generous with blessings and smiles. We heard over and over from people who knew their eyes needed help but they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive, or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason.
It’s so easy to overlook how much difference the volunteers’ small actions can make to the lives of people in Guatemala. The glasses in my country are so easily available, but to people in Guatemala, they are not.
As those who could give them a hand, we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is — and what a difference being able to see clearly makes! Here, we’d like you to join us and take action to help people in need. And every day, those actions change lives. No action is too small; no action is ever wasted.
24.According to Paragraph 1, the author is probably ________.
A.a major host of good deeds
B.a sponsor of an eyeglass team
C.a generous neighbor in his community
D.a supporter of International Relief Teams
25.What do we know about the volunteers in the eyeglass team
A.Their working environment is simple.
B.They are medical experts nationwide.
C.Their initial preparation is inadequate.
D.They have served people in Guatemala for years.
26.Which of the following words can be used to describe most people in Guatemala
A.Kind and helpful. B.Poor but grateful.
C.Considerate and patient. D.Knowledgeable but unhealthy.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A.To urge people to protect their eyes.
B.To ask people to volunteer in Guatemala.
C.To call on people to do good deeds in daily life.
D.To show the difficult life of people in Guatemala.

One inconvenient truth for the clean energy industry is the undeniable fact that wind turbines (涡轮机) kill birds. Researchers say smarter turbines could dramatically cut the toll.
The American Bird Conservancy claims that at least one million bird deaths as a result of wind turbines a year in the US alone is likely to be an underestimate. That’s substantially less than the estimated 980 million birds a year that die crashing into buildings, or the 1.4 to 3.7 billion per year killed by domestic cats. But it’s still an unacceptable number, and a problem that needs to be addressed—because a fully green energy network will need more and more turbines over the coming decades.
Researchers at SINTEF and the Norwegian Centre believe they have an idea that could help in a lot of cases. The idea — known as SKARV— is fairly simple: each turbine will have cameras fitted, capable of spotting birds flying directly into the path of the rotors (螺旋桨). Software will automatically calculate their predicted path, and if it looks like they’re in danger of being hit, the system will send control signals to slow the rotors down.
In simulations (模拟), the system is able to avoid the vast majority of crashes. This, of course, doesn’t describe all situations. For example, if a young, inexperienced bird approaches a turbine displaying irregular flight behavior, it will not be possible to predict exactly where it will be a few seconds later. Prediction is also more difficult if several birds approach at the same time.
Some researchers argue that birds are learning to avoid turbines voluntarily. But if more than a million birds a year haven’t got the memo yet, it’s still a problem worth solving. We look forward to hearing how trials progress.
28.What does the underlined phrase “cut the toll” in paragraph I probably mean
A.Maximize efficiency. B.Reduce deaths.
C.Lower costs. D.Prevent errors.
29.What can be inferred about bird death caused by wind turbines in paragraph 2
A.It tops the list of bird deaths. B.It calls for immediate action.
C.It has been properly solved. D.It shows progress in technology.
30.How does SKARV make wind turbines intelligent
A.By keeping a constant speed. B.By recording birds’ behavior.
C.By predicting potential danger. D.By sending warnings to birds.
31.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Challenges presented in simulations. B.Features of birds’ flying patterns.
C.Examples of SKARV’s application D.Approaches to crash avoidance.
D
Every time your fingers touch your cell phone, they leave behind traces of chemicals. And each chemical offers clues to you and your activities. By analyzing them. scientists might be able to piece together a story about your recent life, a new study finds.
A molecule is a group of atoms. It represents the smallest amount of some chemical. Your skin is covered in molecules picked up by everything you’ve touched. With each new thing your skin contacts, you leave behind some small share of what it’d touched earlier.
Researchers at the University of California. San Diego (UCSD)recently analyzed such chemical leftovers on the phones of 39 volunteers. The study was led by biochemist Amina Bouslimani. To explore those remains, the UCSD team wiped the surface of each volunteer’s phone with a cotton swab(药棉签). The scientists also swabbed each person’s right hand.
Then the researchers compared the chemicals found on each cell phone. The scientists discovered as many of the molecules as they could. They then compared these to a database of chemicals. Pieter Dorrestein. a UCSD pharmaceutical chemist, had helped set up that database a few years earlier, which contains various substances, including spices, caffeine and medicines.
Traces of anywhere from hundreds to thousands of different molecules turned up on each phone. The molecules reflected what had been in the body, and what each person had handled before touching the phone. From all these molecules, Bouslimani says. “We could tell if a person is likely female, uses high-end cosmetics, dyes her hair, drinks coffee, prefers beer over wine or likes spicy food.”
Police already use molecular analyses to look for traces of explosives or illegal drugs. To date, Dorrestein says. he’s never heard of police using phone remains to narrow down behavioral clues to search for a suspect. But detectives might one day use such data to track down someone
who left a phone behind at a crime scene.
32.What can we conclude about the user by analyzing the leftovers on the phone
A.Personality. B.Intelligence. C.Appearance. D.Lifestyle.
33.What was the first thing needed to be done for the study
A.Comparing different chemicals. B.Hiring volunteers with cell phones.
C.Building a database containing chemicals. D.Collecting the chemicals from phones.
34.What’s the author’s attitude towards the application of the research finding
A.Uninterested. B.Disappointed. C.Doubtful. D.Positive.
35.What should be the best title for the text
A.Fingers Leave Clues about You on Your Phone
B.Your Phone May Be Home to Various Chemicals
C.Molecules Are Used to Search for Illegal Drugs
D.Cell Phones Will be Used in More Fields
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever heard someone say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, or give you advice about why it’s vital to start the day with a healthy breakfast 36 Is it really that important In a sense, it really matters.
Energy restoration
The word “breakfast” comes from “breaking the fast” — the idea of ending the period in which we didn’t eat during the night. The regeneration process that takes place while we sleep consumes some of our natural food reserves to heal our bodies. 37 So, in that way, a healthy breakfast makes sense.
Weight management
There are also many often-quoted studies which seem to link a state of obesity with skipping breakfast. 38 In a US study, 50,000 people were monitored over seven years, and those who ate a healthy breakfast were found to have a lower BMI, which seems to suggest that breakfast may indeed help people maintain a healthy weight.
Better brain function
39 Breakfast is also associated with improved brain function, including concentration and language. A review of 54 studies found that eating breakfast can improve
memory, though the effects on other brain functions were inconclusive. However, one of the researchers says there is reasonable evidence that breakfast does improve concentration.
What’s most important is what we eat for breakfast. High-protein breakfasts have been found particularly effective in reducing food cravings and consumption later in the day. However, studies found that there is no agreement on what type of breakfast is healthier. 40
A.Breakfast helps us refill the exhausted stores.
B.Weight-loss is likely to cause them health problems.
C.Breakfast has been found to affect more than just weight.
D.Breakfast types don’t matter as much as simply eating something.
E.Thus, it is suggested that a healthy breakfast can regulate and lose weight.
F.Many people are recommended to manage their weight by skipping meals.
G.It seems that this feast, for many of us, is necessary for our day to start well.

M: Probably the best thing to do is to walk around and familiarize yourself with everything. Now I need you to fill in this form. Take it away with you and then make an appointment to see me again and we’ll go over it. My telephone number is on the form. You can ring me anytime, except on Thursday.

【原文】M: Attention please! Now I will give you a brief introduction to the Winter Festival. It is a free event for all people to enjoy, and is organized by a team of volunteers. The first Winter Festival was introduced the year before last. Sadly due to a lack of money no festival was held last year. This year the government may provide $15, 000 to the festival. They also persuaded the businessmen around the town to offer the rest $5, 000.
There will be a free art exhibition on Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December in the Center Park of the town. The opening hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and there is an opening night only on Friday, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Different from other exhibitions, this art exhibition is really a special one because the public will have the chance to watch the paintings which are from the town’s school. And all the paintings are created by the students. It is great that the Festival is going to host a wonderful sound of music in the Main Exhibition Hall this year. This programme aims to show some of the musical talents that we have in town. Everyone watching the performance had better not wear formal clothes, but fancy dress. And in the programme, you will hear classical music, pop music, rock music and operas.
