When the fifth grade school year was almost over, all the girls made autograph (签名) books. As I signed my classmates’ books, I noticed their moms had written in them, too. “I couldn’t be prouder of you. Can’t wait to see how you like junior high!” “Congratulations! We love you and know you have a bright future!”
I asked my mother to sign mine, too. When she handed it back to me, I was anxious to see what she had written. This is what I found on the page:
When a thing is first begun
Never leave it till it’s done.
Be the labor great or small.
Do it well or not at all.
That was it I was frozen. It was an indication to me that, if I couldn’t be perfect, I wasn’t good enough. I held back my tears, left the page in but secretly hoped my classmates wouldn’t read it.
Do it well or not at all. For years, I battled perfectionism and never felt good enough for most of my life.
When my mother was in her eighties, I gave her a book to fill out so we could know more about her. It had questions at the top of each page and then blank space to respond. I secretly hoped she’d
been working on it all along. Sadly, not long after, my mother passed away. When I sorted out her belongings, what I wanted more than anything was that book. What I found stopped me short. On page ten, the question was, “What’s the best advice you got from your parents ” Her response was what she had written in my autograph book. Even though I’d memorized it years ago, I read it at a slower pace now, seeing it in a new light.
It was written to her by her mother, and she was passing it down to her daughter in the same way. A gift from her to me. She was giving me treasured, valuable advice when all I was thinking about were words of praise. I understand it now.
24. In paragraph 1 the author found that words from other classmates’ moms ________.
A. contained reflection on life
B. expressed their thankfulness
C. showed pride in their children
D. featured a formal writing style
25. Seeing her mom’s words on the autograph book, how did the author feel
A. Disappointed. B. Motivated. C. Hopeful. D. Anxious.
26. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 5 imply
A. The author memorized the words from her mom.
B. The author was surprised to see the same words again.
C. The author found it easy to see the words clearly under the light.
D. The author began to have a new understanding of her mom’s words.
27. What gift did the author’s mom give her
A. A vision of a perfect world.
B. Encouragement to do things well.
C. Her mom’s wisdom of loving yourself.
D. Her mom’s advice on living at a slow pace.

A plant-based diet seems to be the best option for human health. A team led by medical doctor Angelo Capodici of the University of Bologna in Italy has found that humans eating vegetarian(素食的) diets tend to have measurably better health outcomes in several areas.
This does not mean that you should immediately excise meat from your diet, since the diet
needs of individuals can vary significantly. What it does suggest is that making dietary changes might be a much more powerful tool for improving health outcomes, if it can be done safely.
Since diet is easy to change, Capodici and his colleagues(同事) wanted to take a closer look at the impact of plant-based eating on the risk of these diseases. They studied the data collected from 48 reviews between January 2000 and June 2023, and found that vegetarian diets were associated with better health status on a number of risk factors for both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. Overall, these plant-based diets were associated with better cholesterol(胆固醇) levels and blood sugar control, a lower risk of both cancer and heart disease compared to those of plant-and-meat eaters.
The team noted, though, that vegetarian pregnant(怀孕的) women did not show a significantly lower risk of high blood pressure. They were also careful not to draw conclusions about plant-based foods being the only cause of these health improvements.
It’s also worth noting that plant-based diets can result in vitamin and mineral shortage; and, of course, many different health conditions, such as allergies(过敏) require a careful, tailored approach to food. Because of these, the researchers caution against the large-scale adoption of plant-based diets. Rather, they say more targeted and more specific research should be conducted, in order to narrow down why these diets are positively correlated with better health.
28. What is the finding of the new research
A. Vegetarians are likely to have a healthier body.
B. Individual dietary needs do not affect health outcomes.
C. Humans should eat more vegetables to enjoy a longer life.
D. Plant-based diets have become more popular in recent years.
29. What does the underlined word “excise” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Remove. B. Obtain. C. Distinguish. D. Steal.
30. How did the team conduct the research
A. By giving reasons. B. By analysing data.
C. By listing examples. D. By making comparisons.
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Plant-based diets are an invitation to allergies among people.
B. Plant-based diets can make up for vitamin and mineral shortage.
C. Further researches should be focused on how to improve health.
D. Individual health needs should be considered before diet changes.
D
Some people prefer paperbacks because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers. But which is the more environmentally sustainable option
Whether it’s better to read books in print or on a device is complicated, because of the complex interaction of the resources involved across the entire lifecycle of a published work: how
books and devices are shipped, what energy they use to run, if they can be recycled.
On the one side, traditional print publishing comes with a high carbon footprint. According to 2023 data, 32 million trees are cut down each year to make paper for books. Then there’s the energy-intensive processes of printing and shipping—to say nothing of the many books that are destroyed because they remain unsold. Although it’s standard practice in the industry, publishers don’t want to destroy books. So instead, many are donating unsold copies, switching to on-demand printing. Publishers are also rethinking book design, since certain fonts (字体) can be more climate-friendly by using less ink and less paper.
On the other hand, digital reading seems to have a considerable eco-advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees and shipping. Moreover, tech companies that make e-readers such as Amazon offer recycling programs for old devices. But digital devices also come with a substantial carbon footprint, especially at the manufacturing stage. Their cases are made with plastics and the minerals in their batteries require resource-heavy mining.
Figuring out whether to take a digital device or a paperback to the beach ultimately depends on how much you read.“ If you buy an e-reader and you read loads and loads of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do,” said Mike Berners-Lee, the author of The Carbon Footprint of Everything. “But if I buy it, read a couple of books, and decide that I prefer paperback books, then it’s the worst of all worlds.”
Yet Berners-Lee said that reading is still, relatively speaking, a pretty sustainable activity——regardless of whether you read using an e-reader, phone or old-fashioned paperback.
32. Why is it hard to tell if print or digital books are more eco-friendly
A. The whole processes for both involve many resources.
B. The option depends on the reader’s personal preferences.
C. Recycling programs are not equally effective for both types.
D. The environmental impact of reading habits is often overlooked.
33. What are book publishers doing to reduce the environmental impact
A. Cutting down fewer trees.
B. Destroying the unsold books.
C. Employing eco-friendly practices.
D. Focusing on the sales of digital books.
34. According to Berners-Lee, an e-reader is more sustainable than paperbacks when .
A. an e-reader is shared by many people
B. you charge it using renewable energy
C. an e-reader is recycled after being used
D. you read a high volume of books digitally
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Print books vs. e-readers: which is your favorite
B. Paper books vs. e-readers: which is better for the climate
C. Choose digital reading, for it reduces more carbon footprint
D. Keep the balance of convenience and sustainability in reading

With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic(国内的) vacation on a train Compared to other alternatives, it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. __36__ But no matter when you travel, it’s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance.
Use a travel agent. Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets. __37__ Then you won’t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. When you’re riding on trains, you won’t be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. __38__ In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster. __39__ Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.
Have fun. __40__ Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile (the distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you’re going 67.92 mph.
A. Train trips aren’t for impatient types.
B. You’ll have views from both sides of the train.
C. The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control.
D. That’s particularly true during busy summer months.
E. You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one.

In the first and second grades, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn’t very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.
So in our school’s annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.
One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny! ‘ But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you. It’s your choice.”
My mind was spinning (快速旋转) faster than the windmill (风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.” I looked into Mrs. Sally’s shining blue eyes and said, “Okay, I’ll try.” I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and
show the world who I really was.
In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered (掌握) my lines and songs.

M: We’ll spend 10 days touring the Everglades, and eventually end up in Disney World—for two extra nights!
W: This is the best day ever!

W: Have you considered working on the village’s fishing boats They’re always looking for young people.
M: My dad was a fisherman, so was my grandfather, and so was my great-grandfather. I saw how they worked at sea and decided that it wasn’t for me. The pay isn’t great either.
W: It might not match an accountant’s pay, but the sense of achievement after a hard-working day is unmatched.
M: Accountants work hard too—and so do doctors, which is what I’ve always wanted to be. Why shouldn’t I train to become one
W: You should... if treating patients is what you really want. But I just think fishing is a tradition in your family, and it’s such a beautiful village. You should at least do it as a summer job.
M: Fine! But only to earn some money before I go to the university.

M: Do you remember when we were younger, Mom and Dad considered moving house
W: Yes, I remember it well because I was worried about making new friends. I was just five years old.
M: Well, I used to think Dad was so strong that he would physically pick up our house and move it somewhere else!
W: Ha-ha! It’s funny how we thought of our parents as superheroes when we were children! I remember watching Mom dancing when she cooked dinner. I used to consider her the world’s best dancer!
M: She did have some good moves!
W: And I thought Dad should have been on TV because of the funny voices he had used when reading us bedtime stories!
M: I always loved those stories! Hey, they’ll be back in a minute. Let’s get Mom to dance and Dad to read you a story again!
W: That sounds perfect! It will be like experiencing our childhood moments again.
M: Exactly! And I believe they’ll enjoy remembering those times too.
