The UNESCO world heritage- listed Maya city of Chichen Itza is one of Mexico's most amazing attractions, where you can see stunning, monumental buildings built between AD 750 and 1200, including the Castillo pyramid and the Temple of a Thousand Warriors.
Getting there & doing it
Chichen Itza lies 80 miles from Tulum on the road to Merida. Hotels and tour operators organize tours here but it's better to hi re a car and go independently. Understanding a little about the pre-Columbian Maya really brings these site s to life. You could read Michael Coe's The Maya, and / or Joyce Kelly's An Archaeological Guide to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula before you go.
The site can be explored comfortably in 2 hours. For refuelling after, head 40km east to Cancun for authentic Mayan organic foods.
While you're there
Allow some time to drive on to Merida, the "White City ", an old and very Mexican city with beautiful
churches and great markets. Also stop by Cenote Ik-Kil for a swim with a difference.
When to do it
The site is open all year around, seven days a week. Gates open at 8 am and close at 5 pm. The rainy season from May through October sees the fewest visitors to Mayan Riviera. On a Friday morning in April, Dan Stein, the founder of Giving Green, a climate charity organization, found some big news in a surprising email. An anonymous(匿名) donor had given his fund $10 million.
"I didn't quite expect so many zeroes and thought of it to be a mistake, " Stein said, adding he was "delighted and shocked " by the gift.
Giving Green collects donations and gives them away to a handful of nonprofits that it believes have the potential to make a significant difference in preventing climate change and reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. The S10 million donation is by far the largest single gift the nonprofit has ever received and it essentially fell out of the sky without warning.
Stein and his team think the same donor may actually have given as much as $17 million more directly to those organizations in the last two years. Because the gifts are anonymous, it's impossible to confirm, but Stein says the timing of the gifts suggests they could have come from the same person or organization.
In general, giving anonymously is often regarded as the highest form of giving. Stein said, adding the donor thinks "I'm doing this out of a sense of creating a better community and simply believing that this money should go towards other uses rather than sitting in my pocket or my bank account. "
Stein sees the donations as evidence that there are donors who want to give to climate change but don't know where to donate. "The climate problem is an incredible generational problem and we think that we, as a society, should be doing things to stop it, "Stein said. "And that one thing that people can do is making donations. "
Stein said Giving Green intends to distribute the majority of the $10 million gift as soon as possible, with much of it going to the organizations they recommend. They' ll also direct smaller amounts to new organizations or programs within organizations that they support.
24. What was Dan Stein's reaction to the anonymous donation
A. He was indifferent. B. He thought about rejecting it.
C. He was overjoyed and couldn't believe it. D. He immediately knew who the donor was.
25. What is the main purpose of Giving Green
A. To carry out climate change researches.
B. To educate the public about climate change.
C. To set up nonprofit organizations to deal with climate change.
D. To help solve climate problems by collecting and distributions.
26. According to the text, why is anonymous giving considered the highest form of giving
A. It focuses on improving the society. B. It makes the donation process simpler.
C. It ensures the donor gains public recognition. D. It helps keep the donor's bank account a secret.
27. What does Stein plan to do with the donation
A. Save the majority of it for future needs.
B. Use the majority of it for marketing and promoting.
C. Distribute most of it to recommended organizations.
D. Giving most of it away to new organizations or programs.

Researchers in Japan say they will begin selling new devices that will help people cut down on the amount of salt they use to improve the taste of their food. The' developers are from Japan's Meiji University and drink company Kirin based in Tokyo.
One new device is an electric spoon, which sends a weak electric current to the tongue. The current is too weak to be felt. However, it makes salt taste one and a half times stronger. This means we can eat food with less salt, but still sense a salt y taste.
The Electric Salt Spoon will sell in Japan for around $120 beginning in June. Meiji University professor Homei Miyashita developed the spoon and a similar device. electric chopsticks. The chopsticks will likely go on sale next year.
The recent announcement marks the first time the technology has been used in a product for sale to the public. Last year, the effort gained a different sort of attention. It won the 2023 Ig Nobel Prize in nutrition. Organizers describe the prize as recognizing research that makes "people LAUGH, then THINK. "
Miyashita and his laboratory have explored ways that technology can create human sensory experiences. They have also developed a lickable TV screen that can recreate the taste of food.
The beer producer Kirin is turning to healthcare products to expand its traditional business. A company spokesperson said the technology might be especially useful for Japanese people, whose traditional diet favors salty foods. The average adult in Japan consumes about 10 grams of salt per day. The World Health Organization recommends half that amount.
Eating foods with too much salt can increase the chances of having cardiovascular diseases, like high blood pressure and heart attacks. "To prevent these diseases, we need to reduce the amount of salt we take, " said Kirin researcher Ai Sato. Sato said it is hard to cut salt in the usual way because it would mean "eating bland food. "
28. What is the chief purpose of the new devices
A. To make food taste less tasty. B. To cook food more efficiently.
C. To help people reduce their salt intake. D. To replace traditional cooking devices.
29. What is the main idea of the third paragraph
A. The practical application of different electric devices. B. The price and availability of the electric devices.
C. The awards won by the Electric Salt Spoon. D. The importance of reducing salt intake.
30. Why might the technology be especially useful for Japanese people
A. They traditionally prefer salt y foods. B. Their diet contains too much fat and sugar.
C. Japan produces a large amount of salt each year. D. Many Japanese suffer from cardiovascular diseases.
31. What does the underlined phrase "bland food " in the last paragraph most probably mean
A. Food that is very salty. B. Food that is tasteless. C. Food that is not healthy. D. Food that is too bitter.
D
Wild chimpanzees are known to consume a broad range of plant matter, making it hard for researchers to figure out whether chimpanzees intentionally seek out medicinal plants to heal(治愈) themselves, or "passively "
consume plants that happen to, be medicinal.
At the Budongo Central Forest Reserve in Uganda, researchers from the University of Oxford observed the behaviors and health of 51 wild chimpanzees, belonging to two habituated communities. The researchers observed a male chimpanzee with an injured hand seek out and eat the leaves of a fem, which may have helped to reduce pain and swelling. They also recorded another sick chimpanzee consuming a cat-thorn tree.
The team also tested the plant species in the reserve, which they suspected were being consumed by the chimpanzees to self-medicate, for anti-inflammatory (抗炎) and antibacterial (抗菌) characteristics. The species included plants not part of the chimpanzees' normal diet, but being consumed for their healing characteristics. The authors found 88% of the plant species had antibacterial characteristics, arresting the growth of bacteria, while 33% of them had anti- inflammatory characteristics.
Deadwood from a tree in the Dogbane family showed the strongest antibacterial activity and also had anti- inflammatory characteristics, suggesting it could be used to treat wounds, they said. Roots from the East African mahogany tree and leaves from fem were found to exhibit potential anti-inflammatory effects. The results suggested that chimpanzees looked for and at e specific plants for their medicinal effects, and the study was one of the first to document evidence of this kind, the authors said.
Team member Fabien Schultz hopes that the findings might lead to promising candidates for human medicines. "What if human lives can be saved by following the ways of our animal relatives " he says.
32. Why is it challenging to determine if chimpanzees intentionally seek out medicinal plants
A. Medicinal plants are rare in the forest.
B. Chimpanzees consume a wide variety of plant matter.
C. Chimpanzees hide themselves when they are sick or injured.
D. Researchers can hardly observe chimpanzees in the thick forest.
33. Which of the following might have the most powerful antibacterial effects
A. Dogbane trees. B. Leaves of ferns.
C. Cat-thorn trees. D. East African mahogany tree roots.
34. What potential benefit does Fabien Schultz hope to achieve from the findings
A. Identifying new human medicines. B. Developing new animal care techniques.
C. Improving chimpanzee health in the wild. D. Discovering new food sources for humans.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The Diet of Wild Chimpanzees' B. The Medicinal Characteristics of Plants

There really is a lot of pressure on people to change these days. We are frequently told to change our opinions, attitudes, behaviors and directions. 36 Instead of always striving to change to meet others' expectations, perhaps people should focus on accepting themselves.
There is an old saying: "You can't tea ch an old dog new tricks ", implying that change (i. e. teaching "new tricks ") is important but old dogs cannot make that change. _37_ . Instead of believing change is essentially necessary, we should consider why change is needed and what purpose it serves.
38 For example, a situation where a person is being told they need to have a. "more positive attitude " is different from a situation where a student is being told they: need to stop shouting at others every day. Certainly the second one reflects a much clearer need for change than the first.
If others are telling you that you need to change, that does not mean they are wrong but also does not mean they are right. 39 However, you needn't let it be the final word on what you need.
Even if you decide to change because others are telling you they are bothered by how you are, it is still important to remind yourself that you are making the choice to change. You can take their opinions but still remind yourself, "I am looking to change because I do not want people to be upset at me, not because I have to ". 40
A. The motto has meanings for humans, too.
B. Change can have a great many benefits.
C. Change takes a variety of different forms.
D. You need to let them have their opinions.
E. Animals get older and have more experiences.
F. Actually, the significance of change might be overstated.
G. That way you can remind yourself that you are seeing a reason to change.

In 2020, when she was just 10 years old, Angela Zhao entered her first piano competition. On the day of the
event, each participant had to go up onstage one by one and perform their piece in front of a panel of judges and an audience. At first, Angela was excited and confident, as she had been preparing for months, practicing diligently every day under the guidance of her piano teacher.
However, as her turn approached, doubts began to flood her mind. "What if I played the wrong notes What if I forgot the notes What if I just mess up " Angela remembered thinking.
As these worries raced through her mind, Angela watched another girl perform. The girl played beautifully. Angela couldn't help but feel kind of jealous y and admiration. Once the girl finished, she walked off stage to where Angela was waiting and did something unexpected.
"She looked at me and smiled with a thumb up. " Angela said. The simple gesture took Angela by surprise. "Her smile made me think that today I'm just right and I can perform on the stage. "
Encouraged by this act of kindness, Angela took a deep breath and walked out to the piano. She sat down, closed her eyes for a moment to steady herself, and then began to play. As her fingers moved over the keys, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. The notes flowed effortlessly, and she lost herself in the music. When she finished, Angela looked up and saw her competitor clapping for her, a genuine smile on her face.
Seeing such a show of support has stuck with Angela over the years. "As a competitor, she gave me respect and helped a shy girl to face the stage, " Angela said. If she could talk to that girl again, here's what Angela would say: "You changed a moment of my life, and your kind smile remained in my memory. And I' ll take that smile at a precious gift. "

第二节
One possible version:
Several years have passed, but Angela always takes a moment to reflect on the power of a simple smile.“ That moment was a turning point for me,” she said.“ It has taught me the importance of kindness and support, even in competitive environments. And I realized that a simple gesture, like a smile, could make a world of difference to someone who was feeling nervous and unsure of themselves.” Angela continued to pursue her passion for piano,
participating in more competitions and performances. Each time she stepped onstage, she remembered the girl's smile and the confidence it gave her.
Angela's experience also inspired her to help others. She began volunteering at local music schools, offering support to young students. She wanted to be that person who could offer a smile and a few kind words to a nervous performer.“ Looking back, I believe the girl's smile was a secret of my success,” said Angela.“ It reminds me that kindness is just as important as talent. I hope to pass on this lesson to others, encouraging them to support and uplift one another.”

M: I'm with Karina Rogers, who's training at a top restaurant to be a chef. Karina, where did your interest in cooking come from
W: Well, both my parents prepared food in their hotel kitchen, and although I helped them a bit, I never enjoyed that much. In fact, it wasn't until I worked for two weeks at a restaurant that I realized cooking was for me. Before that, I'd just make salads for myself.
M: And the restaurant was really pleased with you.
W: Yes, and that gave me the confidence to enter a cooking competition. I wasn't among the winners, but the judges really liked what I made.
M: Then a top chef noticed your cooking.
W: Yes, and he gave me a Saturday job at his restaurant. My first task was to prepare a salad. No one had told me the food was for someone famous, but it seemed she really liked it, so as a result the chef offered to train me full time at the restaurant.
M: And do you eat out in your free time
W:I don't do that anymore.
M: Because it is expensive
W: No. On my days off, I just like eating at home. It's a good chance to be with my parents!

Your kids can't afford to miss the opportunity to bring out the best in themselves! The Mini Olympic Games are on July 16th. You just need to pay 10 for participation, and you' ll make a valuable contribution to our three aims. Firstly, we long to invest most of our contributions in medical research at the Children's Health Centre, which is our chief intention to launch this campaign. Secondly, we hope to raise money to build a new school library and restore the swimming pool. Last but not least, we want to encourage children to actively take part in sports and form the habit of exercising as well. There's a wide range of events. Interest is likely to be the greatest in the football match, with volleyball coming a close second. If I could make a final request—— we' ve had plenty of entries for the long jump, but not enough for the high jump, and we don't want to cancel that, so please see if you can convince your kids to sign up for that. By the way, please tell your kids that the priority is security and competition comes second. And your kids should be accompanied by you. Thank you for your cooperation.
