The Summer Olympic Games this year are in Paris, France, which does not have an ocean. So, how do organizers plan to present competition in the sport of surfing They are taking that Olympic event in a small coastal
village called Teahupo’o in the South Pacific country of French Polynesia. Hundreds of people are expected to visit Teahupo’o to watch the sport, as the surfers go out onto the famous waves from July 27 to August 4.
Proposed preparations for the event included building temporary housing, roads, and even a large structure out on the water. The work called for drilling into a coral reef. However, opposition to the plans quickly grew. Environmentalists, locals and surfers joined forces to protect Teahupo’o’s culture, its corals and other sea life.
For locals, Teahupo’o beach was a“secret spot” with a special energy known as “mana”, and they want that special quality protected. There are concerns that a week of Olympic competition there could destroy the “mana”.“It was too much for us, a big change,” said Levy, a Tahitian surfer and a volunteere on a local environmental organization.
Some people worry that the drilling into the reef will disrupt the ecosystem and attract a dangerous algae (海藻). If fish eat the algae, people who eat the fish can become sick.“The water is where we get our dinner,” 22-year-old Maitei, a spearfisher catching fish to feed his family, said.
Local Tahitians’ worry were confirmed when a boat working on some Olympic construction hit a piece of the reef and broke it. “In Polynesian culture, gods are everywhere in nature, in the coral, in the ocean. If we break a coral, we break a home,” Cindy Otcenasek, a local official, said.
No new buildings or roads are welcome for the locals. And the organizers are adjusting their plans as a result. For example, they will not be building any Olympic housing. Instead, athletes will stay on a nearby boat. Homes of locals will serve other Olympic housing needs. Judges will watch the competition from the platform. The whole world is ready for the great events and the impact.
24.Why is the 2024 Olympics surfing to be held in Teahupo’o
A.It is the sister city of Paris. B.It is the best choice for the sport.

A.The rich fishing resources. B.The surfing spots.
C.The power of mana. D.The unique corals.

A.They are worried the event will damage the environment.
B.They want more construction and development in the area.
C.They think the event will bring too many tourists.
D.They don’t like the sport of surfing.
27.What are the organizers doing to address the local concerns in Teahupo’o
A.Building new roads and housing for the event.
B.Cancelling the Olympic surfing competition.
C.Relocating the event to a different location.

Deceleration isn’t really in the runner’s vocabulary. For many of the people who do it, from Olympic champions to 5K enthusiasts, running is the pursuit of speed itself; a sport defined by personal bests, competition and striving. Slow That’s a four-letter word.
Until quite recently, slow running has become “A Thing”, backed not just by wellness experts on Instagram, but also by a growing number of coaches, amateur runners and exercise scientists, too. The thinking is that going slow could be a fast way to enjoy the benefits of exercise.
Slow running is usually defined as a pace at which you can comfortably hold a conversation. Think of it as an effort of 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 - 10, where 10 is an all-out sprint (冲刺). If you know your sports science, it’s referred to as ‘zone 2 exercise’ and it’s a physiological sweet spot that can improve and extend your life.
So, what makes the unhurried approach so healthful As well as improving the strength and pumping capacity of your heart, slow running can avoid metabolic diseases and encourage your body to use fat for energy. Slow runners also recover faster and are less likely to suffer tiredness or injuries from overtraining. They’re also more likely to feel good.
“There are huge positives for emotional health,” says Gordon, an exercise physiologist at Anglia Ruskin University in southeast England. “The benefits for things like mood state, depression and anxiety don’t really decrease any more if we increase the exercise intensity. And then there’s the social aspect. One of the things to emphasize with slow running is, you can actually have a conversation!” Gordon believes that promoting slow running might encourage more people to exercise and stick with it, partly because you can do it with friends and partly because there’s no pressure to perform.
28.What is the most important for a runner on the sports field
A.Speed. B.Health. C.Interest. D.Enjoyment.
29.What does the underlined word “backed” mean in Paragraph 2
A.Explained. B.Defined. C.Supported. D.Proved.
30.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about as to slow running
A.Its definition. B.Its benefits. C.The training. D.Its popularity.
31.What does Gordon say about slow running
A.It benefits a lot to mental health. B.It is key to increase the intensity.
C.It offers a chance to make friends. D.It is no easy work to stick with it.
D
There are millions — possibly billions — of ponds (池塘).Yet for a century or so, they are poorly understood and scientists have paid them very little attention. This neglect (忽视) might not have mattered if it were not for increasing evidence that ponds are extremely important habitats for wildlife.
Ponds are being shown more bio-diverse than rivers or lakes. Interestingly, this seems to be partly due to the small size of ponds, which allows them to have a wide range of conditions. The community in a pond with clear water will be very different to that in a nearby seasonal pond made cloudy by farm animals. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams, as flowing water tends to equalize water chemistry.
So why have we ignored such a vital part of the natural world A key reason appears to be the bias (偏见) we humans have where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, scientists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find.
Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are artificial habitats: we look at the human-made examples around us and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. In our new book Ponds, Pools and Puddles, we show that ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a constant presence.
Now, views are taking on new shapes. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a proposal on small wetlands, including ponds, giving crucial recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDER FUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
In a world where freshwater faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological (生态的) engineering we can easily achieve to help support one of the most threatened bits of the environment.
32.What may contribute to the biodiversity of ponds
A.The nearby animals. B.The constant temperature water.
C.Their diverse conditions. D.Their regularly changing conditions.
33.What caused ponds to be neglected
A.People’s love for nature. B.Insufficient ponds for research.
C.People’s mistaken belief of ponds. D.Lacking scientific research methods.
34.Why is “PONDERFUL project” mentioned
A.To promote the Ramsar Convention.
B.To prepare for the research on ponds
C.To highlight the importance of small wetlands.
D.To show the changing attitudes towards ponds.
35.What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A.Penny wise, pound foolish. B.A small key opens a big door.
C.Small streams make great rivers D.A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I would feel ashamed every time I receive a new package (包裹) on my doorstep. I know that buying new stuff is bad for the planet. But every time I buy something, I get some happiness that’s hard to give up.
Recently a new book has given me new insights: 36 It’s the way our brains have evolved (进化). And there may be a way to break the cycle. We are evolved from simple organisms that survived because their networks of nerve cells learned to repeat rewarding (有益的) decisions. Today, we have billions of action cells in the brain. They are always forming connections to strengthen rewarding behavior. 37 We seek out those releases in dopamine, and at the same time repeat the actions that lead to them.
38 Maybe you weren’t even thinking about buying watercolor paints. Then something reminded that you like painting, and you searched online and found they were less expensive than you expected. When they arrived on your doorstep, they were better than you thought. Your brain will be drawn to repeat the behavior that got you something unexpected and good.
The best way to break the overbuying habits is not to stop buying things completely.
39 Imagine you’ve formed a habit of eating chocolate before bed for comfort, even though you know you don’t need the calories. You can try having milk with cocoa powder as a healthier replacement, which provides similar comfort. Once you start losing weight, the reward of being able to fit into your old clothes will feel
as good as the chocolate once does. 40 Buying used items satisfies our desire to acquire. It gives us the same good feeling of an unexpected reward without consuming more resources.
A.We need that same replacement for shopping.
B.Whether that approach would work is up for debate.
C.Our brains especially like it, and release more dopamine.
D.My desire to keep buying things isn’t necessarily a personal fault.
E.In this process, dopamine is released, helping us learn how to obtain a reward.
F.The good feeling connected to unexpected rewards is partly why we like shopping.
G.A better solution may be to replace the old, long-term harmful rewards with new ones.

She worked hard to provide for her children, doing a few part-time jobs to make ends meet. In spite of the challenges, Mary managed to give them a happy and stable (稳定的) childhood.
One Saturday morning, Mary was at home with her children, preparing breakfast for them. Jack was beside her while James was playing alone in the bedroom next to the kitchen. It was a typical weekend, filled with laughter and warmth. Little did they know something unexpected was just around the comer.
As Mary was busy with the food, a fire broke out in the kitchen. Panicked, Mary took hold of Jack and rushed towards the front door. They made it to safety only to find James remained stuck inside. Mary put Jack down and turned back to get James out, but in such a hurry and panic, she missed a step and fell on the ground. Her right ankle got sprained (扭伤) so seriously that she couldn’t stand up. Mary sat on the ground helplessly, her tears mixed with screams, “My kid is still in the house. Somebody, help me!”
At that very moment, Simon, 52, a former army soldier in the same community as Mary, happened to pass her house and saw the terrible scene. He immediately ran across the yard to ask the crying mother where her kid exactly was. In a shaking voice, Mary responded, “In the bedroom next to the kitchen.” The fire spread quickly and the house was filled with thick smoke. Simon looked around and saw a blanket hanging beside a pool full of water in the middle of the yard.

My Sports Story
Among all sports I like swimming best. I fell in love with it quite by accident.
When I was younger, I never thought I would meet a drowning child needing my help. But I couldn’t swim at that time. Although I was very nervous, I managed to draw him out of the river with a long stick. I thought if I
could swim, I would have helped him more easily and quickly. From then on, I have paid special attention to swimming. Every afternoon, I go swimming and I always ask my PE teacher to instruct me to practice in a right way.
Now, besides swimming, I like football, basketball, running, cycling and so on. Sports help me keep healthy, happy, and energetic.

Without hesitation, Simon took action. Dipping the blanket in the water pool and covering his head with it for necessary protection, he rushed into the house. Unable to see things clearly through the smoke and fire, Simon
lowered himself to the ground, stretched his hands and felt his way forward until he reached the bedroom. Just then, a faint voice of a child caught his attention. Following the sound, he finally found James lying in a comer, frightened and helpless. He grabbed James, wrapped him in the blanket and made his way back towards the open door.
Simon rushed out of the burning house with James in his arms. Seeing James carried to safety, Mary breathed a sigh of relief. At that moment, firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the fire. Then Simon, Mary and her children were all sent to a nearby hospital, where they received timely medical care. Simon’s heroic act saved James’ life. Mary couldn’t thank him enough for his selflessness and bravery. But Simon said smilingly, “It was no big deal. I just did what I was supposed to do.” This experience brought the community closer, and Simon’s courageous act inspired others to consider what they would do in similar situations.
