Technology has be ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )en an encouragement of historical change. It acted as such a force in England beginning in the eighteenth century, and across the entire Western World in the nineteenth. Rapid advances were made in the use of scientific findings in the manufacture (制造) of goods, which has changed ideas about work. One of the first changes was that other forms of energy have taken the place of human power. Along with this came the increased use of machines to manufacture products in less time. People also developed machines that could produce the same parts for a product: each nail was exactly like every other nail, meaning that each nail could be changed for every other nail. This means that goods could be mass production, although mass production required breaking production down into smaller and smaller tasks.
Workers no longer ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )started on the product and labored to complete it. Instead, they might work only one thousandth of it, other workers completing their own parts in certain order. There is nothing strange about this manufacturing work by today's standards. Highly skilled workers were unable to compare with the new production techniques, as mass production allowed goods of high standard to be produced in greater number than could ever be done by hand. But the skilled worker wasn't the only loser, the common workers lost too. Similar changes forced farmer away. The increased mechanization (机械化) of agriculture freed masses of workers from ploughing the land and harvesting its crops. They had little choice but to stream toward the rapidly developing industrial centers. Increasingly, standards were set by machines. Workers no longer owned their own tools, their skill was no longer valued, and pride in their work was no longer possible. Workers fed, looked after and repaired the machines that could work faster than humans at greatly reduced cost.
1. In this passag ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e, which of the following is NOT considered as a change caused by the use of scientific findings in the production of goods
A. Other forms of energy have taken the place of human power.
B. The increased exploitation of workers in the 19th century.
C. The increased use of machines to make products in less time.
D. The use of machines producing parts of the same standard.

C. were unable to produce goods of high standard
D. were unable to produce fine goods at that same speed as machines
答案解析:答案为D。本题为 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )细节题。从文章第二段 “Highly skilled workers were unable to compare with the new production techniques, as mass production allowed goods of high standard to be produced in greater number than could ever be done by hand.” 可知,机器批量生产的产品标准高,数量多,这是手工生产无法匹敌的。故答案为D。
3. According to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the passage, what did the farmers have to do with the coming of mechanization of agriculture
A. Many of them had to leave their farmland for industrial centers.
B. They stuck to their farm work.

Each new school ye ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ar brings fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback. Simply speaking, it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Since the end o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )f World War I (WWI) in 1918,Canadians, and millions of others around the world have paused at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to honour the sacrifices our soldiers have made in different wars, fighting for the freedoms that we all enjoy today.
Known as Reme ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mbrance Day, the day originated as a tribute to the soldiers of WWI, a dark period for our young country, which claimed the lives of over 60,000 military personnel and civilians and over 16 million dead worldwide.
As there are no more ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )surviving soldiers of WWI,today we rely on the wisdom and words of those soldiers who fought in the wars that followed, and this day now also recognizes their heroic contribution.
They tell us to alwa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ys remember what those brave souls fought for, and all they ask in return is that we never forget.
That’s why we w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ear the red poppy (罂粟花);that’s why when we see a soldier in uniform we should stop him or her and say “Thank you” ; that’s why we take a pause from our busy lives for two short minutes today to honor that request.
Yet this message is fading away, year after year.
Take for example the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )terrible decision to allow parents to excuse students from Remembrance Day ceremonies at school.
Not only is t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )his disrespectful, it distances the student from his or her classmates.
It is difficult t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o understand why any Canadian parent would want to remove their child from the time-honored tradition of reading the poem In Flanders Fields, while a wreath of poppies is laid.
It is more impo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rtant than ever to teach school-aged children about our history,no matter how violent it was. Sheltering them from the realities of war is a great disservice.
Understanding why ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) conflicts happened, or happen today, can help shape choices and decisions they make as adults.
Of course, because we ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )live in a free society, we cannot force an individual to do something. It is unfortunate, but some parents now have their child “opt-out” of the services. These people should be reminded they are free to make such choices only because of the men and women the rest of us are remembering.
36.Which of the following is true about Remembrance Day

American actor Johnny ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Depp can best be described as unconventional. From his early life, his path into acting and even in his choice of movie roles,we can see that Depp has seldom taken the easy road. His willingness to take risks and do the unexpected has made Depp one of the few Hollywood actors able to achieve huge commercial success while maintaining his artistic reputation.
Born in 1963,Depp was somewhat troublesome as a youth,
.occasionally tur ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ning to petty-crime and drugs. When his parents divorced in 1978,Depp dropped out of school against his mother’s wishes and started a music band called the Kids. Although the band achieved some success, they were seldom able to make ends meet, with Depp often unable to pay his rent, sleeping rough on friends’ sofas and even in his car.
In 1983,the ever-o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ptimistic Depp and his new wife, Lori Anderson, moved to Hollywood California to further Depp’s musical career. But life there continued to be a struggle and Depp was forced to take a job selling pens door to door to support his new family. His luck changed when Lori’s ex-boyfriend, the famous actor Nicholas Cage, impressed by Depp’s good looks and intelligence, suggested he become an actor and helped him get a small part in a movie. Several other minor movie roles — and a divorce from Lori — followed, before Depp got his big break three years later. He landed the leading role in the television series 21 Jump Street, playing a youthful undercover police officer. The hugely popular show turned Depp into a teenage heartthrob overnight. He appeared on the cover of countless magazines and was much sought after by movie producers, eager to exploit his popularity with teenage girls.
But Depp left ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )21 Jump Street after three years, when it was at the height of its popularity, later admitting that he hated the show’s unoriginal storylines and his “pretty boy” character. In the decade that followed, Depp rejected repeated offers of “pretty boy” roles in big-budget Hollywood films. Instead he established himself as a serious, somewhat dark, peculiar performer, consistently selecting roles in smaller, independent films that surprise critics and audiences alike.
Even in the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )movie that made Depp an international superstar, The Pirates of the Caribbean (2003 ),he was barely recognizable as Captain Jack Sparrow, the British,long-haired golden-toothed pirate. This and subsequent hit movies have placed Depp at the very top of the commercial film industry ( with a pay-check of $20 million for each such movie) but he still continues to make the smaller, stranger films for which he is so greatly admired.

Researchers from Fra ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nce and Italy discovered that Canadian parents are less strict with their children than mothers and fathers in France and Italy.
“Our most impo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rtant finding was the difference between Canadians and the others,” said Professor Michel Claes, the lead author of the study.“Canadians focus on independence and negotiation. On the other hand,Italians, for example, exercise more control. We found Canadians seem to focus on negotiation in case of a conflict.”
Claes said Canada,Fra ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nce and Italy were selected for the study because they share important cultural and social factors.“We chose French Canadians because they share the same language as France, and originally came from France and share certain values.Italy was included because it was considered to have similar, strong and important family values,” he explained.
The researchers ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )examined the emotional ties between parents and their children by questioning 1,256 students aged 11 to 19 years old.
Canadian students ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )reported less control and more free actions, according to the study.Italian parents were stricter and French parents were somewhere in the middle.
Claes explai ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ns that the differences lie in education in Canada,France and Italy.
“North Americ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a has its own educational values, which promote individualization.Tolerance and comprehension are encouraged.Italy,on the other hand, promotes respect of authority, control, and the need for permission,” he said.
Children from al ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )l three countries described their mothers as warm and communicative.Italian and Canadian children had similar feelings about their fathers, and reported high levels of emotional ties. But French fathers were generally thought by their children to be more distant and cold.
“We were surprised b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y this,” Claes admitted.“It seems as though the relationships between French mothers and their children were becoming closer over time, while fathers maintain a form of distance and coldness, which is more of a source of conflict in France than in the other countries.”

When Luca first h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eard of the Island of Inventions, he was still very young. But its wonders sounded so incredible that they were forever burned in his memory. From that moment, he never stopped searching for clues which might lead him to the island. He read hundreds of adventure books, histories, volumes of physics and chemistry, even music.
Over tim ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e, he pieced together his idea of what the Island of Inventions was like. It was a secret place, where all the great wise men of the world would meet to learn and invent together. Access to the island was totally restricted. To join, you had to have created some great invention for humanity. Only then could you receive the special invitation — which came with directions to the island.
So Luca ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )spent his youth studying and inventing. Every new idea he got, he made it into an invention, and if there were something he didn't understand, he’d seek others to help him. Soon he met other young inventors and he told them about the Island of Inventions. They too dreamed of one day receiving an invitation letter.
As years passed, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the disappointment of not receiving their invitation made Luca and his friends work harder and co-operate more. They would meet in Luca's house, share their ideas and build new machines. Their inventions became known throughout the world, and improved the lives of millions.
But still, no invitation came.
They didn’t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) lose heart. They continued learning and inventing every day, trying to come up with more and better ideas. Fresh young talent joined their group, as more inventors dreamed of getting to the island.
One day many ye ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ars later, Luca, already very old, was speaking with a brilliant young man named Roberts, who had written to him, asking him to join the group. Imagine puttin ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )g a seed in a freezer, waiting 30,000 years, and then taking the seed out and planting it. Do you think a flower would grow
Amazingly, scie ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ntists have just managed to do something very similar. They found the fruit of an ancient plant that had been frozen underground in Siberia — a region covering central and eastern Russia — for about 31,800 years. Using pieces of the fruit, the scientists grew plants in a lab. The new blooms have delicate white petals. They are also the oldest flowering plants that researchers have ever revived from a deep freeze.
“This is like re ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )generating a dinosaur from tissues of an ancient egg,” said University of California, Los Angeles biologist Jane Shen-Miller.
The plan ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t has a long history. Back when mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses walked the land, an Arctic ground squirrel buried seeds and fruits in an underground chamber near the Kolyma River in northeastern Siberia. The ground became permafrost, a layer of soil that stays frozen for a long time.
Recently, Rus ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sian scientists dug out the old squirrel hole and found the plant remains 38 meters below the surface. Back at the lab, the team fed nutrients to tissue from three of the fruits to grow shoots. Then the scientists transferred the shoots to pots filled with soil. The plants produced seeds that could be used to grow even more of them.
It’s impo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rtant for scientists to know that plant tissues can still be revived after being frozen for a long time. That’s because many researchers are trying to preserve the seeds of modern plants by freezing them and then storing them in giant lockers at various spots around the globe. One such endeavor, an underground facility in Norway, is called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It stores hundreds of thousands of frozen seeds. If a plant ever goes extinct, scientists could bring it back by taking its seeds from the Svalbard or other storage lockers.
“No one kn ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ows how long they are able to live for, but freezing is basically the format for many plant conservation attempts nowadays.” Shen-Miller said. It’s a good thing that at least some plants are tough enough to survive the experience.

Grandma celebra ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ted her fifty-third birthday just weeks before grandpa died of cancer in 1965. Although his passing was very difficult for her, I think their shared struggle to make his life longer taught grandma that good health was not to be taken forgranted, and she made up her mind to live the rest of her own life as fully and as long as she could. One day, when she announced to attend lessons at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Portland, Oregon, where she lived, we rolled our eyes in embarrassment and helplessly wished she would just stay home and bake cookies as normal grandmothers did. Many years filled with countless dance lessons passed before we learned to appreciate the wonder of having a dancing grandma.
I suppose grandm ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a's primary motivation for wanting to learn to dance was social. She had been a shy girl, always very tall and heavy, and had married into grandpa's quiet lifestyle before developing any elegance or confidence in her personal appearance. Dancing, on the other hand, filled her life with flash lights, wonderful parties, beautiful dresses, handsome young dance instructors, and the challenge of learning. Although the weekly dance lessons did not change her ample, two-hundred-pound figure, grandma surprised everyone with energetic performances on the dance floor, which soon gave her as much elegance and confidence as any Miss American competitor.
Having taken we ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ekly dance lessons for years, my grandma learned various dances easily and was soon participating in dancing matches all over the Northwest. When I was fourteen, grandma proudly invited me to watch her compete in one of these matches to be held in the grand ballroom of the Red Lion Inn. My attitude was still unenthusiastic at that point, but to make her happy, my mother and I attended the match. As if to prove me wrong, grandma made a wonderful showing in every event she entered. I thought she was truly the queen of the ball during the dance, and my thoughts were shared by the judges a short time later when she was awarded a gold cup for her outstanding performance.

The earth's most ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) rich resource—water has become one of the most precious resources in the United States as rivers, lakes, and freshwater reservoirs are increasingly exploited for human use. Consequently, using precise farming techniques to refine “irrigation scheduling” is a research area of particular interest to Susan Moran, a researcher with the US department of Agriculture. She explains that in the southwest, irrigation is both difficult and expensive. There, she says, farmers have a tendency to over irrigate, spending both more time and money than necessary.
“I'm trying to pr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ovide new information that could be used by farmers to schedule irrigations to improve their profitability and use less water,” Moran says. “Farmers often look at weather changes and then schedule irrigation based on that information. But if they had better information, they could use scientific models to compute more precisely how much water their crop is using.”
Rather than gue ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ssing their crop's potential need for water based upon weather
changes, farmers ca ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n use remote sensors to measure how much water their crop is actually using. This would give them a more accurate measure of how much more water it needs.
Moran believes that i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )f farmers are getting good and timely measurements of plant and air temperature, then they can program when and how much water to give each crop through an irrigation system. No more water would be used than needed, thus saving cost and conserving water.
Moran introduce ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s one study she conducted in Arizona to investigate the use of remote sensing data for scheduling cotton irrigations. Typically, those farmers irrigate ten times per growing season, but evidence showed that some of those farmers could achieve basically the same harvest with only nine irrigations.
“In those cases, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) one less irrigation saved more than all the cost of remote sensing data,” she states. “Both irrigation and satellite remote sensing data are expensive. But then again many farmers are used to working together as a group. They are used to sharing. I'm hoping they could do the same with remote sensing data—purchase one scene over a large area to cover many farms, which would further reduce the cost.”
1. What does Moran think is the problem with farmers
A. Over used reservoirs. B. Precision farming.
C. Irrigation researches. D. Over irrigation.
答案解析:答案为D。 由第一段最后一句话 “ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )… farmers have a tendency to over irrigate, spending both more time and money than necessary.” 可知,答案为D。
2. How can farmers get the new information about their crop
A. To reschedule irrigation as required.
B. To watch weather changes regularly.
C. To use remote sensors as researchers suggest.
D. To use scientific models since computing is more reliable.
答案解析:答案为C。本题为细节题 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )。从第三段 “…farmers can use remote sensors to measure how much water their crop is actually using.” 可知答案为C。本题容易错选D项。题干问的是 “农民如何得到关于庄稼的新信息?” 从第二段最后一句话 “But if they had better information, they could use scientific models to compute more precisely how much water their crop is using.” 可知,农民如果有了更好的信息可以使用scientific models。故答案D错误。
3. What do farmers che ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ck upon when they decide how much water each crop needs
A. Profitability. B. Remote sensors.
C. The cost. D. Air temperature.
答案解析:答案为D。本题为细节理解题。从 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )第四段 “Moran believes that if farmers are getting good and timely measurements of plant and air temperature, then they can program when and how much water to give each crop through an irrigation system.”可知,农民依靠准确及时地测量植物和空气温度,来决定给每种庄稼配给相应的水分。 故答案为D。
4. What's the purpos ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e of Moran introducing the study she carried out in Arizona
A. To investigate the use of remote sensing data.
B. To support her viewpoint in the previous paragraph.
C. To show how farmers can reap a harvest.
D. To criticize those farmers who used too much water.
答案解析:答案为A。本题为细节题。由倒数 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )第二段首句 “Moran introduces one study she conducted in Arizona to investigate the use of remote sensing data for scheduling cotton irrigations.”可知,答案为A。
5. What is among the best possible ways to help save farmers' money
A. Changing irrigation. B. Sharing sensing data.
C. Buying one computer. D. Extending the farms.
答案解析:答案为B。本题为细节题。由最 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )后一段 ““Both irrigation and satellite remote sensing data are expensive. But then again many farmers are used to working together as a group. They are used to sharing.” 可知,答案为B。

When Docto ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pain, no gain". He hardly watered his new trees, an attitude which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.
Once I asked ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive.
He talked about ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water.
So, inste ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ad of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.
Doctor Gibbs di ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.
I planted a cou ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could.
Every night b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )efore I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to encounter hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.

Tired of all the pushi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng in supermarkets Fed up with waiting in endless lines to pay for what you have bought Angry at wasting time in traffic jams only to find no parking spaces when you eventually arrive at the store If this is you, then online shopping is the answer to your dreams of trouble-free shopping. Or is it
Online shopping ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) brings its own challenges. Here are a few things to bear in mind when browsing (浏览) various websites. The claim made by online sites is that shopping online is a safe and secure way to make purchases. The evidence challenges this. In any case, you only have to be the victim of fraud (诈骗) once to experience all the problems that come with this form of stealing. Use only sites that have a trusted history and an excellent reputation.
Another problem is t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he appearance of items in reality is often quite different from what you see on your computer screen. This might not be a problem if you are buying washing up powder but could be a major disappointment when that beautiful blue dress you ordered turns up in green. Also, product descriptions are sometimes simply untrue. Perhaps the wisest plan is to purchase items where design and color are not essential to customer satisfaction.
Some even argue ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )that online shopping indirectly contributes to global warming. Yes, your car can stay parked but how are online goods delivered Often by some large vans pouring out carbon monoxide and adding to our already desperate traffic problems. You are also by now becoming increasingly irritated (使烦恼) by the fact that the delivery is late and you have wasted the leave from work you have taken to receive it!
Without quest ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ion, online shopping is here to stay and it has its benefits. However, perhaps it is not as wonderful as some of its supporters claim it to be.

Few laws are so effec ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tive that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled—to $1. 01 per pack—smokers have jammed telephone“quit lines” across the country seeking to kick the habit.
This is not a sur ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )prise to public health advocates. They’ve studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase.
The only wonder is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message. Tobacco taxes improve public health, they raise money and most particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted. Yet the rate of taxation varies widely.
In Manhattan, fo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light Kings cost $10. 06 at one drugstore Wednesday. In Charleston, S. C. , where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation, the price was $4. 78.
The influence is obvious.
In New York, high ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys—13. 8%, far below the national average. By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky. Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-smoking records.
Hal Rogers, R ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )epresentative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans“who choose to smoke.”
That’s true. But there ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) is more reason in keeping future generations of low-income workers from getting hooked in the first place. As for today’s adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.
1. The text is mainly about .
A. the price of cigarettes
B. the rate of teen smoking
C. the effect of tobacco tax increase
D. the differences in tobacco tax rate
2. What does the author think is a surprise
A. Teen smokers are price sensitive.
B. Some states still keep the tobacco tax low.
C. Tobacco taxes improve public health.
D. Tobacco industry fiercely fights the tax rise.
3. The underlined word“deter” in Paragraph 3 most probably means .
A. discourage B. remove C. benefit D. free
4. Rogers’ attitude ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) towards the low-income smokers might be that of .
A. tolerance B. unconcern C. doubt D. sympathy
5. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. The new tax will be beneficial in the long run.
B. Low-income Americans are more likely to fall ill.
C. Future generations will be hooked on smoking.
D. Adults will depend more on their families.

If blood is red,why are veins(静脉) blue
Actually, veins are no ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish colour.Although blood looks red when it's outside the body, when it's sitting in a vein near the surface of the skin,it's more of a dark reddish purple colour. At the right depth, these blood filled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.
Which works harder, your heart or your brain
That kind of depends o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n whether you're busy thinking or busy exercising.Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But,in the long run, your brain probably tips it,because even when you're sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.
Why do teeth fall out,and why don't they grow back in grown ups
Baby (or “milk”) te ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eth do not last long;they fall out to make room for bigger, stronger adult teeth later on.Adult teeth fall out when they become damaged, decayed and infected by bacteria.Once this second set of teeth has grown in,you're done. When they're gone, they're gone. This is because nature figures you're set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.
Do old people shrink as they age
Yes and no.M ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )any people do get shorter as they age. But,when they do,it isn't because they're shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱) becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effects of gravity(重力).Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older.Men lose an average of 3 4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more.If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No,because old people don't really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards—their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter,it's because the spine has shortened a little.Or,more often, become more bent and curved.
Why does spinning make you dizzy(眩晕的)
Because your brain ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )gets confused between what you're seeing and what you're feeling. The brain senses that you're spinning using special gravity and motion sensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision and balance stable. But,when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you're moving while you're not!
Where do feelings and emotions come from
Mostly from an ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have this brain area—from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other, newer bits of the brain,we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on the planet.
If exercise wears you out,how can it be good for you
Because our ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )bodies adapt to everything we do to them. And as far as your body is concerned,it's “use it,or lose it”!It's not that exercise makes you healthy;it's more that a lack of exercise leaves your body weak and easily affected by disease.
1.What is th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e colour of blood in a vein near the surface of the skin

2.Why do some old people look a little shrunken as they age
A.Because their spine is in active use.
B.Because they are more easily affected by gravity.
C.Because they keep growing backwards.
D.Because their spine becomes more bent.
解析 细节理解题。根据第四个标题下的“ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱) becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effects of gravity(重力).”可知,老年人变矮是因为脊柱收缩和弯曲造成的。

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
One of our bi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ggest fears nowadays is that our kids might some day get lost in a “sea of technology” rather than experiencing the natural world. TV and computer games are leading to a serious disconnect between kids and the great outdoors, which will change the wild places of the world, its creatures and human health for the worse, unless adults get working on child's play.
Each of us has a place ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in nature we go sometimes, even if it was torn down. We cannot be the last generation to have that place. At this rate, kids who miss the sense of wondering outdoors will not grow up to be protectors of natural landscapes. “If the decline in parks use continues across North America, who will defend parks against encroachment (蚕食) ” asks Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods.
Without having a natu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )re experience, kids, can turn out just fine, but they are missing out a huge enrichment of their lives. That applies to everything from their physical health and mental health, to stress levels, creativity and cognitive (认知的) skills. Experts predict modern kids will have poorer health than their parents—and they say a lack of outside play is surely part of it. Research suggests that kids do better academically in schools with a nature component and that playing in nature fosters (培养) leadership by the smartest, not by the toughest. Even a tiny outdoor experience can create wonder in a child. The three-year-old turning over his first rock realizes he is not alone in the world. A clump of trees on the roadside can be the whole universe in his eyes. We really need to value that more.
Kids are not to blame ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ). They are over protected and frightened. It is dangerous out there from time to time, but repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhood rite of passage (仪式).
Everyone, from develo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )pers to schools and outdoorsy citizens, should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring, taking friendship in fields and woods that cement (增强) love, respect and need for landscape. As parents, we should devote some of our energies to taking our kids into nature. This could yet be our greatest cause.
41. The main idea of Paragraph 2 is that ________.

Brad closed t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother.Expecting a whole day to relax,he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in months.“This will be like a walk in the park,” he'd told his wife.“I'll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom.”
Things start ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed well, but just after eight o'clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike,Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy”. When food had not appeared within thirty seconds,Randy began using his spoon on Alex's head as if it were a drum.Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat (节拍).Mike chanted “Where's my toast, where's my toast” in the background.Brad realised his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.
Life became worse a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )fter breakfast.Mike wore Randy's underwear on his head.Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants.Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes.Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes.Brad knew the talk show had already started.
By ten o'clock, thin ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )gs were out of control.Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter.Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils.Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands.Brad realised that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible.
