Third period Reading strategies: Understanding scientific termsWhen reading articles about science, we often come across difficult scientific terms. We have to work out their meaning in order to understand the text as a whole. Begin by reading the first and last paragraphs for an idea of what the article is about. You will often be amazed to discover that what confused you at first makes sense upon further readings.2011年江西卷D篇Why should mankind explore space Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked. The perfect copy Focus
Scientists have anno ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )unced that they have cloned the first human embryo. This has caused much debate round the world. On the one hand, some scientists point out that if you clone an embryo, you can produce valuable human tissues—such as bone or lung tissue—that could be used to save human lives. On the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and are afraid that, if mankind toys with nature in this way, we may be on our way to producing a real-life Frankenstein's monster. Cloning is producing ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )an exact copy of a plant or an animal using its cells. The first mammal to be cloned successfully from an adult cell was Dolly the sheep. She was born in 1996 and died in early 2003, at a much younger age than normal. When she was born, many people were worried that cloning would lead to more diseases in the animal world. However, in general the scientists were praised for their wonderful scientific advance. Ian Wilnut, the Scott ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ish scientist who created Dolly, is shocked that some scientists are now considering cloning human beings. Although he researches cloning, his intention has never been to create copies of humans. Instead, he thinks research efforts should concentrate on creating new tissues and organs that can be used to cure diseases like cancer. However, some people believe that cloning human embryos with the intention of destroying them shows no respect for human life. Even though h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uman cloning is causing a lot of anxiety, it is good news for Faye Wilson, a 41-year-old saleswoman who cannot have a baby. ‘I am anxious to have a child of my own,’ she says. 'I don't want to adopt someone else's child—if I had the chance, I would have a cloned baby right now.' While cloning human ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) embryos is not legal in many countries, some scientists are already pushing ahead with research in order to produce a cloned human baby. Severino Antinori, an Italian physician, has declared that he wants to be the first to clone a human being. In China, scienti ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sts have focused their efforts on cloning animals, as well as cloned tissues to be used in medical treatment. China has succeeded in producing clones of cows and goats, and continues to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind.Dear Editor, I believe that hu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )man cloning is wrong. If we toy with nature, we will have to deal with the consequences. Who knows what could happen Human life would just become a crop to be harvested or a product for sale. The human race is usin ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )g up Earth's natural wealth. We should be having fewer babies in order to reduce Earth's population, not cloning more. I feel sorry ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )for the lady who cannot have a baby, but I would like to point out that there are many children in the world with no parents who would be delighted to have a mother. Pauline CarterDear Editor, I would like ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) to comment on your article 'The perfect copy'. I think the scientific advances mentioned in your article are fantastic. I am in complete agreement with human cloning. After all, scientists have been challenging moral ideas for centuries. Why should we stop them now On a personal note, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) cloning would totally transform my life. Seven years ago, my 10-year-old daughter died of heart failure. She was beautiful, cheerful and bright. I miss her every single day. If I had the chance, I would clone her immediately so that I could be with her again.Colin Jake

Project 1: Man versus nature
For a long time, our environment has been damaged because humans have been careless. People have harmed nature through agriculture, fishing, hunting and tourism. We further damage Earth by building new channels in the sea and factories on the land, and by creating pollution with chemical waste. We will some day destroy the planet we live on if we continue in this way.
However, if we fo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )cus only on conservation, then people may suffer. Not everything that is best for nature is good for people. Would anyone say that development should be stopped in favor of nature From the point of view of some people, we are only doing what humans have always done, using nature to meet our own needs. Other people argue that such thinking may cause a catastrophe, unless we start to look around and understand how a clean environment benefits us all.
After decades of destroying nature and using up natural resources, many developed nations are now concerned about saving nature rather than developing or destroying it. However, many poorer nations must focus on meeting the everyday needs of their people. In doing so, they are using up natural resources at a fast pace. They have not yet seen the effects of the careless use of the environment like many wealthy nations have. Often they do not realize that the choices they make are bad for the environment. Should they be blamed for destroying hundreds of thousands of acres of rainforest if it means a better income for their people The developed and developing countries of the world need to work together to make sure that people enjoy healthy and happy lives, without the environment around them suffering.
It should not ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) be a question of humans winning and nature losing. Humans can only really win by protecting nature. After all, food has to be produced in a healthy, natural system, and we all need clean air to breathe and pure water to drink. It is mankind's responsibility to find answers that are good for everyone, and everything.
Project 2: GM food: hope or danger
In recent years ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), there has been great progress in the study of genetics. With this progress, doors have been opened up to technologies that never existed before. While many people are excited about these new technologies, these same technologies frighten others. Nowhere is this truer than with genetically modified (GM) food.
There are two ways in ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )which a plant or an animal can be genetically modified. First, new material can be inserted into its DNA to give the plant or animal qualities which it would never have in nature. Second, material can be taken from the DNA of a plant or an animal in order to remove qualities which are not desired.
One aim of GM rese ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )arch is to produce food which will make us healthier. So far, this technology has been used to produce plants which are better able to defend themselves against pests and disease. Supporters of GM food argue that GM plants are healthier and have larger harvests. While there has been research in GM animals such as pigs, no GM meat is being sold at present.
Many questio ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ns have been raised about GM food. No one really knows whether it is safe for animals or humans to eat. Scientists admit that more tests should be done on GM food. Research has been limited to increasing production profits, rather than making sure that GM foods are safe. GM food could therefore be dangerous to eat.
There is als ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o a question as to whether GM plants are safe for the environment. Since GM crops are planted outside, they are part of the food chain—insects and other animals eat them or use their products, and these insects and animals will be eaten by yet other animals. No one knows what effects the GM material might have on the food chain.
Since no one really knows whether GM food is safe, many countries have hesitated to give permission for the production of GM foods, as they would rather be cautious with this new technology.

Special trees ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) that grow faster, fight pollution, produce better wood, and even sense chemical attacks are being planted by scientists in the US.
When 40 per cent o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )f Hawaii's US$14 million-a-year papaya (木瓜)industry was destroyed by a virus five years ago, work began on creating genetically engineered (转基因的) trees.
Researchers successf ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ully introduced seeds that were designed to resist the virus. Since then, more and more people have been testing genetically engineered trees.
Some researchers ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )put special bacteria into trees to help them grow faster and produce better wood. Others are trying to create trees that can clean polluted soil.
Meanwhile fruit f ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )armers are looking for trees that are strong enough to resist worms, and paper companies want trees that produce more wood and therefore more paper.
The Pentagon ( ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )五角大楼,美国国防部所在地) even gave the researchers US$500,000 this year after they developed a pine tree that changes its colours if it senses a chemical attack.
So far, the poplar, eucalyptus (杨树与桉树), apple and coffee trees are among those being engineered. All these can be done today because we have a better understanding of tree genomes (基因组).
However, some pe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ople fear that the genetically engineered trees will cause dangerous results. They are worried that the new trees will breed with natural species and change the balance of the forest environment.
“It could be destr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uctive,” said Jim Diamond, an environmentalist. “Trees are what is left of our natural environment and home to many endangered species.”
But researchers in ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sist that science could give nature a fighting chance against both natural and man-made dangers.
They hope to answ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )er the critics by stopping the new trees from breeding, so their effect on the environment can be controlled.

Ever since they were f ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )irst put on the market in the early 1990s, genetically modified (GM, 转基因) foods have been increasingly developed and marketed in many countries in the word, mainly on the basis of their promise to end the worldwide food crisis. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems Even if it would, is it the best solution
Despite what ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) it promises, GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any corp. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop. GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report than analysed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.
Something else, howe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ver, has been on the rise, While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides(杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But nether is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Farm Coalition.
At the same time ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report.
As a matter o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )f fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farming is supposed to be the first choice.

Batteries can p ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ower anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri (MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.
“To provide enough ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度)”, said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope (放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”
Kwon and his rese ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )arch team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanreal systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.
“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”
His new idea is not o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nly in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.
“The key part of ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”
Together with J. Da ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )vid Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

But can GM technology solve world hunger problems Even if it would, is it the best solution Despite what it ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) promises, GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any corp. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop. GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report than analysed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.Something el ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )se, however, has been on the rise, While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides(杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But nether is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Farm Coalition. At the same t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ime, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report. As a matter of f ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )act, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farming is supposed to be the first choice.57. Which of th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e following best describes the attitude of the author towards GM technology A. Optimistic B. Defensive C. Disapproving D. CasualB Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri (MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.“To provide enough po ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )wer, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度)”, said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope (放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”Kwon and his res ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )earch team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanreal systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”His new idea i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.“The key part of ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.71. Forth periodProject 1: Man versus nature For a long time, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) our environment has been damaged because humans have been careless. People have harmed nature through agriculture, fishing, hunting and tourism. We further damage Earth by building new channels in the sea and factories on the land, and by creating pollution with chemical waste. We will some day destroy the planet we live on if we continue in this way. However, if we f ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ocus only on conservation, then people may suffer. After decades of ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )destroying nature and using up natural resources, many developed nations are now concerned about saving nature rather than developing or destroying it. It should not be a q ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uestion of humans winning and nature losing. Humans can only really win by protecting nature. After all, food has to be produced in a healthy, natural system, and we all need clean air to breathe and pure water to drink. It is mankind's responsibility to find answers that are good for everyone, and everything.Project 2: GM food: hope or danger In recent years, there has been great progress in the study of genetics. With this progress, doors have been opened up to technologies that never existed before. While many people are excited about these new technologies, these same technologies frighten others. Nowhere is this truer than with genetically modified (GM) food. There are two ways in which a plant or an animal can be genetically modified. First, new material can be inserted into its DNA to give the plant or animal qualities which it would never have in nature. Second, material can be taken from the DNA of a plant or an animal in order to remove qualities which are not desired. One aim of GM ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )research is to produce food which will make us healthier. So far, this technology has been used to produce plants which are better able to defend themselves against pests and disease. Supporters of GM food argue that GM plants are healthier and have larger harvests. While there has been research in GM animals such as pigs, no GM meat is being sold at present. Many questions have ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )been raised about GM food. No one really knows whether it is safe for animals or humans to eat. Scientists admit that more tests should be done on GM food. Research has been limited to increasing production profits, rather than making sure that GM foods are safe. GM food could therefore be dangerous to eat. There is also a ques ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tion as to whether GM plants are safe for the environment. Since GM crops are planted outside, they are part of the food chain—insects and other animals eat them or use their products, and these insects and animals will be eaten by yet other animals. No one knows what effects the GM material might have on the food chain. Since no one reall ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y knows whether GM food is safe, many countries have hesitated to give permission for the production of GM foods, as they would rather be cautious with this new technology.Step 1: Read and learn ◆ Listen to the text and grasp the general spirit of the text Language focus: ◆ 1. consider vt. 考虑;认为考虑;认为知识探究:I’m considering changing my job. 我在考虑还份工作。We’re considering selling the house. 我们正在考虑卖掉房子。I consider what he said as reasonable. 我认为他说的有道理。 She considers it impolite to talk while eating. 她认为吃饭的时候说话是不礼貌的。He was generally considered to have invented the first computer.人们普遍认为是他发明了第一台计算机。We consider Jack to have let out the secret. 我们认为是杰克泄露了秘密。归纳整理:consider作“考虑”讲时,其后可接名词、代词、动名词或宾语从句,也可接由how, what等引导的不定式,但不可直接接不定式。consider + n. / pron. consider + doing. consider +从句consider +疑问词+to do consider为“认为”时,后接that从句,复合宾语或带不定式的复合结构,但不可接动名词,结构表示如下:consider + that...consider +宾语+(to be/ as)+n./adj.consider + sb. to have done sth.consider + it + adj./ n.(+for sb.) to do sth.题练落实:B) 1. Since then, more and more people have been testing genetically engineered trees. Some researchers ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )put special bacteria into trees to help them grow faster and produce better wood. Others are trying to create trees that can clean polluted soil.Meanwhile fruit farmers are looking for trees that are strong enough to resist worms, and paper companies want trees that produce more wood and therefore more paper. The Pentagon (五角大楼, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )美国国防部所在地) even gave the researchers US$500,000 this year after they developed a pine tree that changes its colours if it senses a chemical attack. So far, the poplar, eucalyptus (杨树与桉树), apple and coffee trees are among those being engineered. All these can be done today because we have a better understanding of tree genomes (基因组).However, some people fear that the genetically engineered trees will cause dangerous results. They are worried that the new trees will breed with natural species and change the balance of the forest environment.“It could be destructive,” said Jim Diamond, an environmentalist. “Trees are what is left of our natural environment and home to many endangered species.”But researchers insist ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) that science could give nature a fighting chance against both natural and man-made dangers. They hope to answer ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) the critics by stopping the new trees from breeding, so their effect on the environment can be controlled.C) 1. On the contrary, children now are not ready to help others. Actually, they don’t show respect for others and they express themselves and behave freely. The reasons a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )re related to many factors, one of which is the ill information on the Internet and in TV programmes because it has a bad influence on children. Worse still, parents pay too much attention to their scores, ignoring the fact that children’s behaviors should be their greatest concern. Considering the seriousness of this problem, effective measures should be taken. In my opinion, parents and teachers are supposed to set an example of good behaviors to children as they are role models to them. Meanwhile, the information on the Internet or TV should be under strict control. Only in these ways can we help children develop good behaviors.
