第三课时(1a-1e)
Study of the Text
What: This lesson is about listening and talking. Students are asked to match the pictures with the New Year's resolutions. Then there are some questions to review what they have learned in the last lesson. Listening tasks lead to a new topic—what we are going to do to make our resolutions work.
Why: 1a is to introduce various resolutions. 1b is to link last lesson with this lesson and lead students to have a deep thought. 1c and 1d are to help students to learn about actions to make resolutions work. 1e is to apply knowledge to real life and develop students' ability to communicate.
How: The match task and questions can lead students to enlarge their minds and think from more aspects. Listening tasks provide more expressions for students to talk about their own resolutions. Discussion and conversation are helpful for students to develop ability to communicate.
Teaching Objectives
1.To review the sentence patterns about future intentions by listening to the New Year's resolutions.

1.To review the sentence patterns about future intentions by listening to the New Year's resolutions. Step 1 Warming-up and revision 1.Brainstorming: Give as many words of jobs as possible. eg.teacher, nurse, doctor, actor, actress, runner, basketball player, pilot, waiter, computer programmer, pianist, scientist, violinist…(To see who can write the most in three minutes.) 2.Free talk: Talk about your dream and your plan to achieve your goal. 3.Present some other New Year's resolutions on the screen: learn to play the piano, make the soccer team, get good grades, eat healthier food, get lots of exercise… 4.Let students try to remember these resolutions and think of other resolutions. Encourage students to share their ideas and praise their active reaction.
Step 2 Work on 1a 1.Match the pictures with the New Year's resolutions. 2.Share your New Year's resolutions with your partner. 3.Ask some students to share their partners' resolutions with the class. Remind students to memorize resolutions and praise them for shar-ing their resolutions.
Purpose To stimulate students' inspiration of their New Year's resolutions and develop their ability to communicate.
2.To learn to make the New Year's resolu-tions with the phrases. Step 3 Listening Work on 1c: 1.Tell students to read the resolutions in 1a. 2.Play the recording for the students and have them circle the resolutions they hear. 3.Check the answers. Work on 1d: 1.Look at the chart in 1d. Lucy, Kim and Mike are talking about their New Year's resolutions. How are they going to do that Listen and try to fill in the blanks. 2.Students listen to the recording carefully and try to fill in the blanks. 3.Play the recording again and check the answers with the class. Step 4 Work on 1e 1.Make a list of other resolutions and how you are going to make them work. Then discuss them with your group. 2.Ask students to share their resolutions with the class. Observe whether students can get the information accurately and give guidance in time. Encourage students to give a speech and praise their logical minds and clear resolutions.
Purpose To develop students' ability to listen and talk. To lead students to make plans for future and cultivate their minds of planning.
Homework: Interview one of your family member's New Year's resolutions and give a report according to his or her answers.

Study of the Text
What: This lesson is reading and thinking part. The text is about resolutions, including the definition, different types and common points. Reading tasks include answering questions and key phrases used in the text.
Why: 2a is to introduce the topic of the resolution and how to keep it. 2b and 2c are to help students to have a basic understanding of the text. 2d is to master key information mentioned in the text. 2e is to enlarge students' vocabulary and expressions about resolutions.
How: Two questions are used to activate students' background information about resolutions and inspire their thinking of how to achieve goals. Reading tasks are arranged to introduce resolutions to students and let students have a deep thought.

Make a list of resolutions and how you are going to make them work. Then discuss with your group. 3.Ask some groups to act out the conver-sations. Ask other students to evaluate whether they can keep their resolutions or not. Step 2 Reading 1.This passage is about resolutions. Skim the passage and get the main idea. 2.Read the passage again and complete the following tasks: Task 1 (1)Read the sentences in the box first. Let some students say the meanings of them. (2)Put the four sentences in the correct places. Task 2 (1)Give students 1 minute to read the infor-mation in 2c. Observe students' reading speed and remind them to skim rather than read carefully.
(2)Read the passage quickly and match each paragraph with its main purpose. Let students underline the words and phrases that helped them decide. (3) Check the answer and invite students to share how they match correctly. Task 3 Work on 2d. Answer the questions with short sentences and highlight where you find the answer in the text. Praise students' reading skills and encourage students to summarize their own skills to do exercises.
Purpose To develop students' ability to think and talk. To lead students to practice reading skills and improve students' ability to get information.
2.To learn the new words and expressions. Step 3 Post-reading Work on 2e: 1.Go through the passage again and find the phrases in the chart in 2e. 2.Students learn how to use them. 3.Make sentences with the phrases. Remind students to take notes and praise their sentences made by the given phrases.
Homework: 1.Required: Review the new words and try to use them. 2.Optional: Write your New Year's resolutions and how to achieve them.

Study of the Text
What: This lesson is reading and writing. Students are required to fill in the blanks as well as read it as an example about resolutions. Then students write down their different kinds of resolutions according to different goals. Lastly, students write a whole passage talking about their resolutions.
Why: 3a is to review expressions about resolutions and set an example for writing one's own resolutions. 3b is to arouse students' thinking about their goals and resolutions and pave the way for the writing task. 3c is to develop students' writing ability.
How: A passage about resolutions works as a model writing for students to imitate. Questions are helpful for students to sort out their ideas and pave the way for 3c. Lastly, the writing task is arranged for students to practice what they have learned and sort out into real writing.

Secondly, analyze the sentences with blanks and determine which word should be used according to the context and sentence structure. Finally, fill in the blanks with words and read the passage completely. 3.Check the answers with the students. 4.Read the text again and answer the following questions: What are resolutions What is the writer's first resolution Observe whether most students have commanded the vocabulary which is necessary for writing. Praise students' various sharing and point out the key expressions they practiced in their sharing.
Purpose To develop students' ability to write using the target language.
2.To learn to write your resolutions. Step 4 Writing Work on 3b: 1.Read the headings. Think about your own resolutions. 2.Write your resolutions under the headings. (If you don't have any ideas, you may go through the passage in 2b.) 3.Students try to think about their own resolutions and write them down. 4.Check the answers with your partner. Work on 3c: 1.Use the notes to write three more paragraphs about your resolutions.In each paragraph, write what you are going to do and why. 2.Writing instructions: This article requires to write students' own resolutions and practice, and explain the reasons, so you should use the simple future tense. Show your resolutions according to 3b. Then, be specific about how you plan to achieve them. Finally, explain the reasons briefly. Pay attention to the structure of the simple future tense (“be going to”) and don't forget the “be” verb. 3.Give students 15 minutes to write down the passage. 4.Invite some students to read their passages to the class. Give some good works as examples for students to learn. Work on 4: 1.Imagine you work for your city. Think of a plan to make it cleaner and greener. 2.Work in groups and work out solutions as many as possible. Observe whether students can sort out the information quickly and accurately. Observe students' writing speed and give them some tips in time for fluent work.
Purpose To check if students have commanded how to express their resolutions and improve students' ability to read, write and sort out information.
Homework: 1.Required: Choose three resolutions freely and write down what you are going to do to keep them. 2.Optional: Make a poster to call for making our city clean, choosing one or two actions listed in 4.
