One summer day, I found a medium sized dog sitting in the grass. The dog stood up and wagged its tail when it spotted me. I petted its coat and checked it for a collar or an ID tag. It had neither.
I told it to sit. To my surprise, it sat obediently (服从地). I set out a bowl of water and a hearty helping of food, and it started eating. I left it in the yard and went inside to read through the newspaper's “Lost and Found” column. Unfortunately, nobody had reported a missing brown and white dog.
Later that afternoon, I went outside and found the dog still lying by the back door. Seeing me, it jumped to its feet and started wagging its tail excitedly. I tossed (抛;掷) a stick across the yard, and it raced after it. I couldn't help playing with it and soon found that it knew many tricks such as fetching, sitting, staying, rolling over, lying down and catching a tennis ball in midair. Obviously, someone had trained it extremely well. When my parents came home, I showed them the dog and all its tricks. They were surprised as much as I was.
The next day, I called the newspaper and ran a “Found” ad describing our new friend. While I played with the dog later, it suddenly dawned on me that the dog was too quiet. I told it to “speak”. But it just stared at me and remained silent. This super dog was becoming more of a mystery each day. It could walk on its back legs, balance a ball on the end of its nose, and give a paw for a “handshake”, but it never barked.
Three days later, we got a call from a woman saying that the dog sounded like hers and gave us a perfect description of its markings. I gave her directions to our house, and she said she'd come within the hour to get the dog. None of us wanted to admit that we had secretly hoped we'd be able to keep it.

The concept of comfort zone refers to a psychological state in which we feel safe and do not experience anxiety or fear. It is a “space” that we know completely and in which we control almost everything.
Your comfort zone represents things you're familiar with, your regular haunts, friends you're at ease with, and activities you love doing. Your comfort zone is risk free. It's easy. It doesn't cause you to stretch. Within these boundaries we feel safe and secure.
During my senior year in college I was short of a few credits, so I skimmed through the class schedule looking for something to fill the hours. When I came across “Private Voice Instruction”, as in singing lessons, I thought, “Why not step outside my comfort zone and give it a try?”
I was careful to sign up for private lessons instead of group lessons because I didn't want to make a fool of myself by singing in front of other students.
Things went fine until the end of the semester when my singing professor brought the shocking news. “By the way, Sean, have you decided which song you want to sing at the recital (音乐演奏会)?” “What do you mean?” I asked in horror.
“Well, the class requirements state that you have to sing at least one time in front of the other private voice students.”
“That would not be a good idea,” I said emphatically.
“Oh, it's no big deal. You'll do fine.”
Well, to me it was a huge deal. The thought of singing in front of a group made me physically sick. “How am I going to get out of this one?” I thought. But I couldn't allow myself to do that because I had been speaking to various groups over the past year advising them to never let fears make their decisions. Now...I was up to bat.
“Courage, Sean,” I kept rehearsing in my mind. “You've got to at least try.”

My teacher bit into the pastry that I had given him. Suddenly, amazingly, before my eyes, he began to grow smaller. Help! I have shrunk my teacher!
How could it be This very pastry was supposed to be my lunch. The shrinking pastry was safe at home, on my study table. Then Oh no! I must have switched it!
The pastry which had a shrinking spell (咒语) was going to be a present (actually a punishment) for the bully next door. Oh! Who could tolerate that boy Always throwing water balloons at neighbors, stealing anything possible, beating up yours truly! But no one can get away from the rage of an underage wizard. The pastry was my way of revenge. But alas! The pastry was now within my teacher's stomach, showing it's true powers.
“Anwesha! Can you hear me?” A tiny cry reached my ears. As I looked down at the chair where my previously overweight teacher was sitting, there stood a small figure, seriously waving at me.
“Oh, Sir! I'm so sorry!” I ran up to him. I felt sorry for him. But still it was his own fault that he was so tiny. After all he had wanted to eat my lunch when I had politely offered it to him. Was it my fault that I was going to eat it right when he walked in
Just then the bell rang and the whole class came back. Obviously no one could see him. The monitor came back from the staff room and declared that our teacher was nowhere in sight. That meant a holiday! A cheer ran through the entire classroom. Before long the classroom looked like an airport with paper airplanes all over the place and all passersby thought that this was actually a zoo, not a classroom. I knew that the principal would be here any minute now. My teacher was so angry now that he resembled a tiny red balloon rather than Tom Thumb.
“Now get this straight, Anwesha. If I don't get back to normal this second, you're going to fail my class for the rest of my life. You hear me?”

Ariana tried to hold her breath. She moved away slightly, but Ashley only moved closer and continued talking.
Ariana thought to herself, “Why does she always have to sit next to me?” Ashley didn't seem to notice that Ariana was trying to move away, and she leaned in closer. Ariana wanted badly to tell Ashley that she didn't smell very good, but how could she do that without hurting her feelings
When Ariana got home from school, she complained to her mother. “There's a girl named Ashley who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad. Nobody else likes to sit next to her, either.”
“Well, try to be nice to her,” said her mother. “Maybe she's having a hard time at home. You never knew what a person's home life is like.”
For the rest of the week, Ariana tried to be a good friend to Ashley. There were times when they had fun talking and playing together, especially on the days when Ashley bathed. But on the days when she smelled bad, Ariana still found it very hard to be her friend.
One morning, while getting her hair combed for school, Ariana brought the subject up again with her mother.
“I don't want to be friends with Ashley anymore,” she told her.
Her mother's hands froze in midair. Ariana turned to see what the matter was. Her mother looked upset. Ariana wondered what she had said to make her mother react this way.
“I don't think you understand Ashley's situation, so let me ask you this...” Her mother's tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you'll look nice when you go to school Who makes sure you're bathed and cleaned every day And who makes sure your clothes are washed and neatly ironed?”
“You and Daddy,” answered Ariana.

There was a boy with a big nose. He often told a lie because the truth only got him into trouble quicker. His name was Daniel and had been equated to be much like Pinocchio who told lie upon lie and his wooden nose grew longer.
This boy, not realizing that he just got into more trouble than the truth would have, casually said what his immature mind told him to say. Everybody he spoke to would know the things he said were not always true, so they listened with muted ears. “He must grow up and start realizing that falsehoods don't get him anywhere in life,” they said. Daniel's future seemed worrying the way it was progressing.
He was very lonely in his world. No friends would ask him to visit or come over and play. “The world is cruel,” he would think. “And I must force myself upon it in an interesting way. A little lie now and then is okay and I will be loved and liked by many.” The torment he was experiencing deprived him of sleep many nights, as Daniel watched the orange glow of sunrise.
How wrong he was to think he was not liked just for being himself! Daniel really couldn't be completely faulted because lying was never shown to him. He came from a broken home, father dead and mom working twelve hour shifts to make ends meet. He was to be found on street corners after school with a rough bunch of boys. He so wanted to fit in with them that he picked up the bad language and personality these “tough guys” would project, though he knew it wasn't really him. Sometimes he would look up into the night sky and feel the loneliness of moonlight streaming just on him.
Deep down inside him, a voice would yell, “Hey, that is wrong; don't do it.” or “Get away from this group of losers.” Nevertheless, his lonely mind would sway him to stick with them.

On one sunny day in summer, two girls named Gracy and Emma were walking to their homes after school. They were talking about the special celebration activities that were going to take place the next day at their school. They were both in need of something new to wear for the occasion, but they had failed to save enough money to buy anything for that purpose. Both their parents had given them only a small amount to buy something nice for the celebration the next day. But it surely wasn't enough for them, because both of the girls had already picked a fashionable dress in a store that they liked very much.
Once again they came by that store near their school and looked at the dress they wanted to buy, and Gracy suddenly saw a wallet near her feet just outside the clothing store. She picked it up and found a bit of money inside it. She turned to Emma and exclaimed, “Look, I found a little money in this wallet and I am going to use it to buy the dress I want! What a lucky day it is today!” Emma grabbed the wallet and browsed through it and found a name and an address in it.
“It is not a good habit to keep whatever we find, Gracy. Put the money back. There is a name and an address in the wallet. I think it won't be difficult for us to find its owner. We are going to return it,” said Emma.
Gracy was disappointed and said angrily, “No way! I am not putting it back. I just can't find the owner anyway. I can buy the dress in the store with the money.”
Emma then forced Gracy to come with her to the address and they arrived at a house about two blocks away from their school. Emma again insisted Gracy put the money back as it was the last chance. Unwillingly, Gracy put the money back into the wallet. Together, the two of them came up to the door and rang the doorbell.

At eleven years old, my main concern was money. Where could I get it What would I spend it on How much did I need to buy the new must have thing my classmates either had or wanted just as badly as I did
I already had a “job” as a sales representative with a kids based sales company, and I sold wrapping paper and greeting cards with the best of them.
But the more money I got, the more I needed. I volunteered to help my grandmother deliver lunch each day to the elderly and she promised to pay me. Thinking of the money I'd earn, I got really excited.
On the first day, we picked up a large container full of hot meals in a nearby town and then drove to our first stop: a small white house.
My grandmother called out, “Mrs Hershel, we've brought you some lunch.”
The reply in a low voice came from my left. “Come on in.” I nearly jumped when I glanced over to see a tiny old woman in the corner looking at me. She sat in a rocking chair and had more wrinkles than I'd ever seen in my life. The dusty air in the house made me feel dirty. I held my breath until we went back out onto the porch.
Was this really how some people lived I couldn't wrap my head around it.
The next stop was much the same and the next. The houses varied in size and shape, some were nicer than others, but the same wrinkly people waited for their meals. Each person smiled at me and thanked me as I hurried to get out of there.
On the way back, my grandmother said, “For a lot of them, what we deliver is their only meal of the day.” My eyes widened, and I turned to her, “Their only meal?” She nodded, “For some of them too we're the only persons they see. Many of them are alone. A kind word and a smile go a long way.”

I didn't realize that a truly profound moment was heading my way one humid day in July when my car broke down in St Joseph, Michigan.
At that minute, in the parking lot of the motel, I wanted to cry. I wanted to scream. That's when I started talking to an older woman who sat a few chairs away from me.
“So you're having some repairs done?”she asked with concern in her voice. I guessed she could see the frustration on my face.
“Yes,”I said with a sigh.“My car couldn't start. I have no idea about what happened.”
It began normally as this kind lady and I started to talk. She asked me to tell her about what happened to my car. I did, and then we settled into comfortable, casual conversation. We talked about my trip, her home, her husband retiring, my parents retiring.
“Your car is ready, ma'am,” said the service manager to the woman.
“Oh, thank you,” she said.
She stood up and I smiled at her. She wished me luck as she gathered her purse and car keys from the seat next to her. But then as she was about to walk away, she hesitated and then turned back to me.
“You know, I have to tell you something,” she said, and I could see a serious expression on her face.“My daughter died a few years ago. It's so hard even now to do just the simple things,”she swallowed hard, exhaled deeply and went on. “But every now and then I meet someone who reminds me of my daughter, and today, you remind me so much of her.” She smiled with tears in her eyes and went on, “I believe that sometimes people come to my life to remind me of her and to show me that my daughter is still with me and that I can get through this. I've so enjoyed talking to you today.” A genuine smile covered her face. “When you get home I want you to hug your parents. They are very lucky to have you.”

Many years ago, my husband was downsized out of his job, leaving us with a single income—mine. We were a two income family with two income bills and two children to support. Just when it looked like things couldn't get any worse, they did. I lost my job too.
While my husband was knocking on doors, making calls, and scanning the papers for another job, I stayed home and did my best to figure out how to make the most of every cent. It was often difficult to maintain a hopeful, positive attitude, but we did our best.
Anxious about our situation, I tried to think of something that I could do to earn some money. Even a little would help. But what could I do I, too, began searching the want ads, applying for anything for which I was even remotely qualified.
One day I had lunch with a former coworker who insisted that I would be great at teaching computer classes. I had used word processing software extensively at my former job and was definitely an expert, but could I sell that skill Was it possible that people would actually pay me to teach them I remembered my mother's motto—Can't never could until he tried.
I wasn't sure where to start. The first thing I did was to get a meeting room. I then designed a brochure (小册子) that could be mailed, advertising my class.
I was filled with self doubt as I waited for responses. I had absolutely no experience in running a business. I had no training experience. I just had a need and I remembered my mother's words, “Can't never could until he tried.” Well, “Can't” was trying.
Every day, I waited eagerly for the mail. On the third day, I got my first response. I carefully opened the envelope to find a check and two registrations. I couldn't believe it! Over the next two weeks I got more checks and registrations in the mail.

“There's our guide,” I said to the bus driver, pointing at a woman I'd never seen before. The guides were easy to spot. They stood near the entrance gate of Arlington National Cemetery, waiting and watching for the arrival of our big red tour buses. The driver stopped and opened the door for me to step off.
“You must be Becky,” she said. “My name is Anne.” As the tour director for a group of forty three, I quickly confirmed with Anne the sites we would like to see during the next four hours: the Kennedy graves, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, US Capitol, and White House. Most importantly, we discussed when and where to provide a restroom break, not a simple undertaking with so many people. Then we climbed aboard to begin our tour of Washington, DC.
After introducing Anne to the busload of waiting tourists, I handed the microphone to her and made my way toward the last seat. On that day, we managed a brief chat in the shade of an elm tree along the National Mall.
“Where are you from?” Anne asked. “Alabama. Are you from DC?” “Well, I've lived in California and Europe, but I live here now,” she said. “I was born in Ohio, though.” “I was born in Ohio, too.” “Where?” she asked. “Middletown,” I answered. “Me, too!” “I was a Selby,” I said.
“I knew some Selbys. I was a Kiefhaber.” “My doctor's name was Kiefhaber,” I said. “That's my dad!” Anne exclaimed.
I was born without a left arm, and my left leg turned inward. Right away, a doctor placed a cast from my hip to my tiny toes. He monitored my progress closely and was able to exchange the massive cast six weeks later for a shorter, below the knee one. Mom said I enjoyed the freedom of the lighter cast and wore out the foot of it while bouncing in a baby swing on the front porch. That new cast also became a helpful tool for rolling from my back to my stomach. I'd fling it across my right leg, and the weight would flip me over.

A Cross Country Running Race
Last Sunday witnessed a 5km cross country running race, in which both students and teachers of our school participated.
The route started from our school gate to the foot of Nanshan Mountain. The whole course was extremely challenging, especially the part near the mountain, narrow and rough. However difficult it was, no participants gave up halfway. In the end, all the runners held on to the finish line.
The activity was highly thought of, because not only did it provide an opportunity for us to exercise, but it was also of great benefit to our health, physically and mentally.

As I stood in front of the class, which was far away from my comfort zone, I kept repeating to myself, “Courage! Relax! Take it easy! Just perform your best!” It turned out that I did such a great job that all the students applauded my performance warmly.
I left the classroom as if a heavy load had been lifted. Although that experience nearly killed me, I felt a great sense of personal accomplishment on my way home. I was so proud of myself and I frankly didn't care what anyone else thought about my performance. What really mattered was that I had survived. Firstly, it is better to arrive 5 or 10 minutes earlier than the appointed time but it is fine on time. If you'd like to bring a gift, fruit is usually a good choice. At the dinner table, it is appropriate to wait for the elderly people in the family to start eating. But if they insist that you start first, just go ahead. Sometimes the host offers guests more food than they need. In that case, it's OK to let them know you are full.
I hope you can enjoy your stay in China.

It didn't seem quite as exciting when I took the money from my grandmother. When she asked me if I would give it another try, the old woman came to my mind—hungry and alone, I nodded. With those smiles I now saw true happiness in their eyes. And I smiled back, too.
Apart from the smile, I decided to do something special for them. I told my grandmother about my plan and asked her what they needed most. My grandmother said we could buy new blankets for them, which she thought they were in bad need of. So I together with my classmates set a fundraising page to raise money. Soon the donations mounted up to $2,700. Using the donation and the money I saved, we bought them a blanket each. Seeing the smiles on the wrinkled faces, I knew I was making a difference.

Then one morning, he got up and went to the bathroom. Looking in the dresser mirror suddenly, he thought there was a reflection of a wooden doll with a long nose staring back at him. Fearfully, he remembered the tale of Pinocchio whose nose became longer and longer because he always told a lie. “No, it couldn't be...not him; they are only little lies, and small untruths could not hurt anyone,” he shouted in despair.
The voice grew louder, deep inside him. It said, “Yes, it is you, telling lie after lie to make yourself a big man before others. It is a false you! You really are a good hearted lad if shown to the world. Let the real you overpower this false part. Just be yourself and let people like the real you!” He grew into a fine man and became a minister of the church in his family's neighborhood.

Dear Chris,
I'm so glad to hear from you. In your last letter, you showed great interest in the coming of age ceremony held in our school. The following is a brief introduction to the ceremony.
The ceremony was scheduled on June 8, during which we reviewed the past events and watched some videos about the heroic deeds of our schoolmates in the battle against COVID 19. We are all deeply moved by the ceremony, from which we realize that the sense of responsibility always accompanies the process of our growth. We are determined to follow the examples of our excellent schoolmates and make ourselves useful to the whole society. Such is my understanding about growing up. What about yours
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Thankfully, my leg straightened out and grew strong. By ten months, I was cast free and taking my first steps. Amidst the joy, however, my parents worried the final bill for the months of the doctor's care. They already struggled to make ends meet on a steel mill worker's salary. How would they ever afford the specialist's charges for that length of treatment When the envelope arrived, Dad took a deep breath, opened it, and stared at the amount due. Surely, it was a mistake. The bill said they owed only twenty dollars.
The doctor who showed such great kindness to my family was Anne's dad. The chances that Anne and I would meet and discover our connection were almost zero. She was one of hundreds of guides in DC, and I was one of hundreds of tour directors who escorted groups through the city. Anne and I are now friends, with a connection that goes beyond our hometown. We are connected by kindness which touched my family long ago and inspires me yet today.

When the woman's pickup truck pulled into the driveway, the dog raced to greet her. It wagged its tail and jumped up to put its paws on her chest, but it didn't bark. The woman explained that she and her family had gone away on vacation for a few days, and the dog, Peanut, had gotten out when a neighbor came over to feed it. I told her that we had never seen such a well trained dog that knew so many tricks. She smiled and said that Peanut used to be a clown's dog and that she adopted it when it retired from circus performing.
“But why can't it bark?”I asked. “Oh, it can, but it was trained not to,” she explained. “The clowns don't want their dogs to bark and scare the audience.” The woman was extremely relieved to get Peanut back because her children were heartbroken without it. She thanked us again and again. When she finally waved us goodbye and got on the truck, Peanut jumped into it quickly and wagged its tail at us as they drove off. My eyes watered a bit when Peanut gradually disappeared from my sight.
