be afraid to do sth. 害怕做某事，指的是主语对做某事内心感到恐惧, 按照经验或常识不敢去做某事，或没有勇气去做某事
be afraid of doing sth.害怕或担心某事会发生, 表示主语内心里不情愿做某事，也可以说是不希望发生某事，但自己不一定能避免它。即可能发生也可能不发生，只是自己有这样一种得心(即担心发生)。

此句it 为形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式短语“to understand spoken English”,“too+adj.十to do"结构意思是“太……以至于不能……”。此结构表面是个肯定句，实质是表示否定，too后接形容词,to后接动词原形。

“by+动词-ing形式”表方式、方法
“by+动词-ing形式”在句子中作状语，表示方式方法等，by在此结构中有“通过，借助,用(某种方式或方法)”等含义。此外，“by+动词-ing形式”常用来回答how引导的特殊疑问句。
例：Mr.Green makes a living by teaching.格林先生以教书为生。
