Dear Tommy,
I am Ole Orver, Finnair's chief commercial officer. It's my pleasure to warmly welcome you back to the skies with Finnair. I'd like to reflect on some of the developments that we hope you find exciting and helpful:
●This summer season you can fly with Finnair to over 70 European and five US destinations. In Asia, we serve eight cities, including Guangzhou and newly added Mumbai starting 6 August. We operate over 300 daily flights and I'm excited about the addition of Seattle and Dallas to our US network.
●Travel is recovering everywhere, and airports around the world are working hard to manage increased traffic volumes. It is a good idea to reserve some extra time at the airport before your flight. We are doing our very best together with our partners both at Helsinki and in our outstations to offer you a smooth travel experience during this popular travel season.
●You are again able to offset (碳补偿) flight carbon emissions, this time with a service that combines sustainable aviation (航空) fuel and certified climate projects. We at Finnair have ambitious emissions targets and our customers wish for a simple and transparent way to contribute.
●Finnair Plus turned 30 in May. We are committed to developing the programme further to serve you in the best possible way. To make your flight bookings smoother, we recently upgraded the experience of booking award flights in the Finnair app.
Finally, I'd like to thank you for your patience when we haven't got things quite right. Wherever you're travelling in the next few months, I hope it's memorable. Thank you for flying Finnair.
Kind Regards
Ole Orver

A few years ago, I spared a couple of hours from busy academic learning to work in a video store on a daily basis. There was something in the elderly woman's behavior that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of step, the woman moved carefully, and there was no hesitation(犹豫) in her gestures. And she had a job to do.
The elderly woman had walked into the store along with a younger woman who guessed was her daughter. The daughter was displaying a serious case of impatience, checking her watch every few seconds. The older woman detached from the younger one and began to tick through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title scrawled on a crumpled (皱巴巴的) piece of paper. The title was a bit difficult to understand. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies, about quality.
Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who died last Christmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation. We found the movie, and I complimented (称赞) her on her choice. Then, reluctantly(不情愿地), I had to return the elderly woman to her keeper, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.
I walked over to the younger woman. "Is that your mom " I asked. She rolled her eyes and said, "Yeah." There was annoyance in her reply, half sigh and half complaint(抱怨). Still watching the mother, I said, " Mind some advice " "Sure," said the daughter. I smiled to show her I wasn't criticizing. I answered her curious expression by saying, "When she's gone, it's the little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this. I used to let it slip. I know."

B. She was a full-time employee in the store.
C. She regretted not accompanying her mom.
D. She criticized the younger woman seriously.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Lend a helping hand to elderly people
B. Mother is not what we can substitute
C. The past cannot be called back again
D. Always treasure the ones you love

Forests give us shade, quiet and one of the harder challenges in the fight against climate change. Even as we humans rely on forests to take in a good share of the carbon dioxide we produce, we are threatening their ability to do so. The climate change we are quickening could one day leave us with forests that emit(排放) more carbon than they absorb.
Thankfully, there is a way out of this trap — but it involves keeping a subtle balance. Helping forests flourish(繁荣) as valuable " carbon sinks" long into the future may require reducing their capacity(能力) to absorb carbon now. California is leading the way, as it does on so many climate efforts, in working out the details.
The state's proposed Forest Carbon Plan aims to double efforts to thin out young trees and clear brush in parts of the forest. This temporarily lowers carbon-carrying capacity. But the remaining trees draw a greater share of the available moisture(水分), so they grow and thrive, restoring the forest's capacity to pull carbon from the air. Healthy trees are also better able to be free from insects. The landscape is rendered (致使) less easily burnable. The need for such planning is increasingly urgent. Already, since 2010, drought and insects have killed over 100 million trees in California, most of them in 2016 alone, and wildfires have burned hundreds of thousands of acres.
California plans to treat 35, 000 acres of forest a year by 2020, and 60,000 by 2030 — financed from the proceeds of the state's emissions-permit auctions (拍卖). That's only a small share of the total land area that could benefit, about half a million acres in all, so it will be vital to prioritize (优先考虑) areas at greatest risk of fire or drought.
State governments are well accustomed to managing forests, but traditionally they've focused on wildlife, watersheds(分水岭) and opportunities for recreation. Only recently have they come to see the vital part forests will have to play in storing carbon. California's plan, which is expected to be finalized by the governor next year, should serve as a model.
8. What does the author imply in paragraph 1
A. Global climate change may get out of control.
B. Forests may become a potential threat.
C. Extreme weather conditions may arise.
D. People may misunderstand global warming.
9. What does the California's Forest Carbon Plan intend to do
A. To expand the forest planting area.
B. To reduce the density(密度) of some of its forests.
C. To find more effective ways to kill insects.
D. To restore its forests quickly after wildfires.
10. What is vital to California's plan according to Paragraph 4
A. To treat the areas in serious danger first.
B. To carry it out before the year of 2020.
C. To perfect the emissions-permit auctions.
D. To obtain enough financial support.
11. According to the author, California's Plan is ______.
A. impractical B. worthless C. promising D. appealing
D
Buying furniture is easier than ever. You can even order a new table and chairs online without ever leaving home. But did you ever think about how furniture is made The process begins with trees but now researchers have found a better way: growing it in a lab instead of a forest. Instead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation(砍伐森林), Velasquez-Garcia said, "If you want a table, then you should just grow a table."
The research group found a way to actually grow plant tissue(组织) — wood and fiber — in a lab that is similar to the way cultured meat is grown. While there is still a long way to actually grow a table, the team was able to grow structures from cells from zinnia leaves.
Making furniture and other items from biomaterials(生物材料) could eliminate cutting down trees in forests. "The way we get these materials hasn't changed in centuries and is very inefficient," said Velasquez-Garcia. "This is a real chance to avoid all that inefficiency."
There are other benefits to using lab wood too. Lab grown wood can be handled to take on any shape — like 3D printing — so it may be possible to build a table without glue or screwing parts together.
Beckwith, a mechanical engineering PhD student, was inspired by a visit to a farm to try to make land-use more efficient and environmentally sound. "That got me thinking: Can we be more strategic about what we're getting out of our process Can we get more outputs for our inputs " she told MIT News. "I wanted to find a more efficient way to use land and resources so that we could let more farmlands remain wild, or to remain lower production but allow for greater biodiversity(生物多样性)."
Today, the two largest uses of trees are to make wood products and paper. When new biomaterials become readily available (可用的), forests will lose their economic value and will be preserved for their environmental, health, and recreational value. These researchers, likeVelasquez-Garcia, are speaking for the trees.
12. What does the author think of growing furniture according to paragraph 1
A. It might have a bright future. B. It'll cut down daily expense.
C. It's as important as making furniture. D. It turns out to be convenient.
13. What does the underlined word "eliminate" in paragraph 3 mean
A. Risk. B. Fancy. C. Remove. D. Delay.
14. What is the purpose of Beckwith's growing furniture
A. To make large profits. B. To keep biodiversity.
C. To increase production. D. To use wild resources.
15. What's the key to protecting forests
A. Wide use of new biomaterials. B. Less use of wood products and paper.
C. Making effective forest laws. D. Caring more for the environment.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you have mountains of homework ahead of you, getting started can seem like an impossible task. Before you start studying, establish a plan for success.
16 Think about which environmental factors and study skills help you do it best. Decide whether you prefer to work in a quiet space or if a public place like a library helps you. Reflect on whether you remember facts better.
Imagine what you'll achieve by studying. Studying day after day can be boring, but imagine all the good that your hard work will bring. Imagine yourself getting a good score on a test. 17 Or feel proud of your end-of-term grades.
Plug in your computer and close all unnecessary tabs. 18 Or if you're easily distracted but need to use a computer as a reading or research tool, consider printing out the material to help you stay on task. When computer use isn't necessary, turn yours off.
Do your tasks in order. Depending on how tough your subjects are, you can select an ordering system. 19 Or start by tackling the most difficult assignment first so things get easier as you go along.
Give each task a time limit in your schedule. Once you've broken down your study load, it's time to fit them into a schedule. Reserving a specific block of time for studying is a good idea. 20
A. Or receive praise from your teacher.
B. Let out your worries to get them out of the way.
C. Try working from easiest project to the hardest.
D. This way, you can manage your time and achieve success.
E. Assess which study habits bring you the most success.
F. Remove anything unrelated to your study tasks from your workspace.
G. Closing any tab that's not relevant to your studies can keep you focused.

The plants are irrigated by 40 (use) a simple drip system(滴灌系统) and amazingly, this has lowered the temperature of their home by nearly a cool five degrees Celsius.
The idea caught on quickly. Many local schools now have green vertical gardens on their walls, 41 so does Punjab Agriculture University, and even Ludhiana railway station, the first station in India 42 (adopt) this initiative(措施). The railway notes that the plants not only cool the station, but also help absorb the noise, and seem to have a calming and antilittering effect 43 travelers. When I was 15, I followed Roy to the deep mountain in search of astragalus root(黄芪), which is a rare and valuable plant.
We searched the plant for a whole day, but without luck. We found nothing. As it got dark, I asked Roy to go back, but he refused and said, "I would rather sleep on the mountain tonight and continue to search tomorrow!"
I desired to go home but I lacked the courage to go back alone, so I chose to stay and help Roy put up a simple tent under a tree. It was freezing cold on the mountain and there were scores of mosquitoes(蚊子), which made it impossible for us to have a good sleep. What's worse, we heard a wolf howling nearby! I was so scared.
"I heard that wolves bully (欺负) the weak and fear the strong," Roy told me. "Let's strike the shovel (铲子) and shout to scare it away!" He found a stone and started to strike the shovel. And then he shouted as he struck the shovel. Inspired, I followed him to shout loudly.
Half an hour later, I felt cold all over the body. And the cold air on the mountain made that worse. My stomach began to ache. I lay in the tent, shivering, sweating and then falling unconscious. Roy was shocked with panic. He called my name screamingly, but I just made no response. He tried to put me on his back to carry me home but without success. At last, he went out and found some tree branches and blocked up the entrance to our tent with them. Then, he ran to the direction of our village as fast as he could.
Not knowing how much time went by, I heard some sounds approaching near. I thought it was Roy but I didn't hear him saying anything. In a shock, I sat up with a rush. At that moment, my eyes had adjusted to the darkness. Through a hole of our tent, I saw two animals like dogs removing the tree branches with their mouths and claws (爪子). They were wolves!

Life in the Future
In the future, man's life will be very different from that of today.
First, with the development of medicine, people will live longer and healthier. Second, because of the discovery of new energy, the environmental pollution will be under control. Third, people's daily life will change greatly, too. For example, robots will do most of the housework for you; You can take your video mobile phone with you and see the caller while speaking. The most exciting thing is that man will have more free time and each city will have its own spaceport, so you can even go into space for your holidays!

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Their sudden appearance shocked me and a cold sweat broke out all over my body. But I managed to gather myself together. I struck the shovel left beside me with a stone and screamed as loudly as I could. The two wolves were frightened at first and stepped back. But after a short time of hesitation, they continued to remove the branches. And no matter how hard I struck the shovel, they just ignored. I was in despair. But I still held the stone and shovel firmly, thinking I wouldn't give it up without a fight.
Paragraph 2:
Strangely, I saw the two wolves turn around and run away in a flash. "Are they afraid of my shovel " I wondered. But I realized I was wrong when I saw many flashlights approaching my tent quickly. It turned out that Roy had run away to seek help. With a dozen of villagers, Roy was coming to my rescue! They were calling my name and I responded as they removed the branches. As Roy got into the tent and hugged me, I couldn't help crying, both in fright and relief.
