第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
A hearing aid is an electronic device that can receive and amplify((放大)incoming sounds for people with hearing impairment(损伤) to aim for better sound understanding through proper amplification.
Here's how they work :
●A microphone picks up sound around you.
●An amplifier makes the sound louder.
●A receiver sends these amplified sounds into your ear.
Not everyone with hearing loss can benefit from hearing aids—only 1 in 5 people could have improvement to wear them. Most of the time, they're for people who have damage to their inner car or the nerve that 1inks the ear with the brain.
What can I expect from my hearing aids
Unlike eyeglasses, hearing aids do not correct your hearing back to normal. Instead, hearing aids function to amplify sounds in a particular range of pitches—the range where the hearing loss exists, Included in those sounds are speech or environmental sounds such as bells ringing, birds singing, conversations from nearby tables at a restaurant or busy traffic noise.
While the hearing aid technology today is excellent, the devices are still an “aid” and cannot separate the desired speech signal from the background noise as well as our brain and two normal functioning ears can, Therefore, it is important to employ communication strategies when using hearing aids in difficult listening environments.
Do I need one or two hearing aids
If hearing loss exists in both ears, there is greater benefit in using a device in each ear—similar to wearing eyeglasses with two lenses. There are always exceptions to the general rule and that will be discussed with your audiologist(听觉矫正专家).
21. What is the primary function of a hearing aid
A. To diagnose hearing loss.
B. To repair damage to the inner ear.
C. To protect the ears from loud noises.
D. To pick up and amplify incoming sounds.
22. Which best describes the hearing aids today
A. They are imperfect. B. They are cost-effective.
C. They are unreliable. D. They are user-friendly.
23. What does the last part of the text intend to do
A. To present a basic fact. B. To clarify an exception.
C. To make a suggestion. D. To explain a general rule.
B
When I finally decided to try acupuncture(针灸), I only had a friend's experience for back pain and anxiety as a reference. With minimal information, I was excited to experience it for the first time.
I visited New York's newly opened acupuncture studio, whose simple but modern decoration immediately put me at ease. After checking in. I was asked about my goals for the session. I told my acupuncturist I wanted to ease my anxiety and relieve the pressure in my lower back.
Before starting, she examined my tongue, noting that it wasn't as red us expected someone with anxiety and suggested I might have digestive issues. This initial assessment helped her determine where to place the needles. In traditional Chinese medicine, tongue diagnosis(诊断)is crucial as it reveals aspects of one's health, guiding the acupuncturist on treatment points.
I lay lace down on a heated table. The acupuncturist began inserting hair-thin needles into my ankles, gradually working her way up to my head. Each needle caused slight pressure and pain, but not too much The needles targeted areas to relieve tension and stress by directing blood flow.
Once all the needles were in place, I lay still for about half an hour. During this time, I enjoyed a sound therapy session through noise-canceling headphones. Within 15 minutes, I felt incredibly calm, focusing on my breath and the soothing(舒缓的)sounds.
After the session, the acupuncturist gently removed the needles and gave a quick massage(按摩)to release any remaining tension. The sense of calm lasted for about three days. It wasn't until my anxiety returned that I realized how effective the session had been. The sharp contrast made me aware of how much anxiety I was managing daily.
My first acupuncture session was a success, and I plan to return soon. While acupuncture may not be a cure-all, it forced me to step away from stressors and focus on my health. I highly recommend acupuncture for those who deal with daily anxiety. It's a great alternative for managing stress and can also be used as preventative care.
24. What did the tongue diagnosis suggest
A. The author had considerable anxiety.
B. The author might have poor digestion.
C. The author needed treatment at once.
D. The author would suffer back pressure.
25. How did acupuncture affect the author
A. It taught the author how to manage stress.
B. It inspired the author to focus on the past.
C. It improved the author's state of mind.
D. It left the author focused instantly.
26. How would the author summarize his initial experience with acupuncture
A. It was fruitful. B. It was painful.
C. It was beyond expectations. D. It was far from satisfactory.
27. What is the author's purpose of writing the text
A. To provide a scientific analysis of acupuncture.
B. To criticize modern medical practices.
C. To explain the history of acupuncture.
D. To share a personal experience with acupuncture.

A broad smile lights up Ndlovu's face as he recounts the story of an elephant that had wandered less than a meter from his tent the previous night in search of food.
The Forest Reserve is also home to the Panda Masuie Release Site, a unique project that “rewilds” orphaned elephants that have been rescued and rehabilitated. Here, the rescued elephants regularly interact with over 260 wild elephants. Keeping the landscape free of poachers(偷猎者)is critical to their success.
Inspecting the vast area is hard work: Fourteen forest rangers(护林员)are stationed across four remote bases for two weeks at a time, far from their families and without facilities such as running water or electricity. Poorly equipped rangers, who sometimes sleep under the trees at night-in the mud during the rainy season and in the dust during the cold, dry winter—needed more support.
Some agencies regularly supply food, fuel, equipment, and training to ensure the forest and its wildlife are protected from poachers as well as illegal businessmen. “The assistance we are getting makes us more effective in our work to protect animals, especially with modern equipment,” said Senior Anti-Poaching Ranger Femberai Mutsvangwa.
For instance, proof of the improved management effectiveness comes from recordings by trail cameras. Triggered by animal movement and placed at strategic points in Panda Masuie, the cameras are capturing increased numbers of elephants, wild dogs, and other species, Another example is the supply of SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Support Tool) technology, which enables rangers to keep records of sightings, evidence of poachers, and any species of interest, animal or plant. on their cell phones. This information is remotely downloaded by managers, eliminating(消除)the need for rangers to use valuable fuel and time traveling to regional head offices.
The project aims to improve the long-term survival prospects of threatened elephants by building a protection zone of stability, harmony, and sustainable development.
28. What does the underlined word “rehabilitated” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Returned. B. Recovered. C. Reduced. D. Discover
29. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Working conditions of the forest rangers.
B. Selection standards for the forest rangers.
C. Technical training of the forest rangers.
D. Occupational dangers of the forest rangers.
30. Which support can improve forest rangers' efficiency most
A. Food supply. B. Intelligent devices.
C. Skill training. D. Weapons.
31. What can we learn from paragraph 5
A. The cameras are placed at will.
B. The cameras seldom shoot animals.
C. Intelligent technology helps save fuel.
D. Intelligent technology requires professional equipment.
D
Brain cells that control how quickly mice eat, and when they stop, have been identified. The findings, published in Nature, could lead to a better understanding of human appetite.
Nerves in the gut(肠道), called vagal nerves, had already been shown to sense how much mice have eaten and what nutrients they have consumed. The vagal nerves use electrical signals to pass this information to a small region in the brain that is thought to influence when mice and humans stop eating. This region contains prolactin-releasing hormone(PRLH) neurons(催乳素释放激素神经元)and GCG neurons. But, until now, studies have involved filling the guts of anaesthetized (麻醉的)mice with liquid food, making it unclear how these neurons regulate appetite when mice are awake.
To answer this question, physiologist Zachary Knight at the University of California and his team injected a liquid food called Ensure into the guts of these mice. Over a ten-minute period, the neurons became increasingly activated (激活的)as more of the food was injected. By contrast, the PRLH neurons did not activate when the team injected salt water into the mice's guts.
When the team allowed the mice to freely eat liquid food, the PRLH neurons activated within seconds of the animals starting to eat the food, but stopped activating when they stopped eating. This shows that PRLH neurons respond differently, depending on whether signals are coming from the mouth or the gut, and suggests that signals from the mouth have priority over those from the gut. The researchers also found that GCG neurons are activated by signals from the gut, and control when mice stop eating. “The signals from the mouth are controlling how last you eat, and the signals from the gut are controlling how much you eat,” says Knight.
“I'm extremely impressed by this paper,” says the scientist Chen Ran excitedly. “The work provides original insights on how taste regulates appetite and the findings probably apply to humans.”
32. What can we know about the vagal nerves in the gut of mice
A. They occupy a small region in the brains.
B. They have effects when mice stop eating.
C. They are categorized as PRLH neurons and GCG neurons.
D. They regulate appetite when mice are awake.
33. What happened when mice freely ate liquid food
A. The PRLH neurons activated in a short time.
B. The PRLH neurons made mice eat more.
C. The GCG neurons were always activated.
D. The GCG neurons had no response to food.
34. What is the difference between the signals from the mouth and gut
A. Signals from the gut control the eating speed.
B. Signals from the mouth prove more helpful.
C. They have different roles in controlling eating.
D. They play different roles in different species.
35. How does Chen Ran find this research
A. Unbelievable. B. Amusing. C. Thrilling. D. Comfortin

Chowdhury's home stood on a hill above Honey Creek and the railroad line that led to Moingona, lowa. All her life, Chowdhury had heard the rush of water and the whistle of trains. Every train had a whistle. When Chowdhury's father was alive, he had taught her to recognize each train engine by the sound of its whistle. He died three years ago in a railroad accident..
Chowdhury was fifteen years old when the great storm began. It rained on Friday. By Saturday, the ground was muddy, and still the rain poured down. The following Wednesday, the sky paused to catch its breath. However, by afternoon Chowdhury saw more clouds, dark as midnight, rolling toward Honey Creek.
After nearly a week of rain, the creek(小溪)was a wild bull, roaring and leaping. Fence posts, rocks, and entire trees rolled and tumbled down the creek bed, colliding with the bridge, causing it to sway. Then the storm broke, and rain poured from the sky. The water rose.
Chowdhury stared anxiously out of the windows. It was nearly eleven o'clock when Chowdhury heard a loud crash. She knew the Honey Creek bridge had collapsed. Chowdhuryput on her barn coat. "I'm going,” she said. Chowdhury's mother grasped her arm. “No, Chowdhury. You could be killed in that storm!” Chowdhury grabbed father's railroad lantern. “I have to do it, Mom,” she said. With shaking hands, she lit the lantern and ran into the downpour and darkness to Honey Creek.
The water tossed trees and twisted metal like toys. When she arrived on the scene, a terrible thought struck her. The midnight train was scheduled to come through here in less than an hour. The train, its crew, and two hundred passengers were right now, right this minute, headed toward Honey Creek, not realizing that the bridge had collapsed. Over two hundred people could die.She had to stop that train!
